Yeah, it's a good gig for the South Park crew but a real low point for Obsidian. I'm just saying. :decline:

I thought that with Black Isle/Interplay when Tictacs came out. Then we got Derp Alliance 2 (seriously, one of the shoddiest games ever made) and PoS instead of Van Buren.

The key takeaway is that if something makes a company money, they'll try to do more of it. You help make shit successful, they'll sell more of it. Obsidian are human beings, and have human motivations. In a shitty economic climate, they just want to stay afloat, keep people onboard, and secure a decent living. Making hardcore RPGs isn't really congruent with these goals. The best we can hope for is something fun with sprinklings of stuff we like.

I doubt Obsidian's going to be seeing any money from South Park beyond what they're being paid to make it. THQ and South Park Digital Studios likely don't want to split that pie three ways.
Chief Hanlon wins the award of sole Obsidian character to ever make me fall asleep during his 'dialogue',
His suicide speech made me feel things, and that's unusual because I'm usually a completely unfeeling robot when video game characters are telling me a sob story. I'll concede that a lot of it was in Kris Kristofferson's performance.
Joshua Graham isn't even a character in HH, he's just an abstract illustration of the parable of the lost son, miles away from the quality of The Hanged Man as originally enviisioned by Avellbro.
The original Hanged Man was just some chaotic evil loser who quoted bible verses cryptically HOW DEEP

I just realized that the visuals in the South Park RPG are most likely going to have far less personality and style than those in games made for 22 year old hardware.

I'm sad now. Unless I forget something, this is the first non-indie 2D WRPG since ToEE, and it looks like a bunch of goddamn cardboard cutouts.

So true, those visuals are just downright BLAND. I don't really care too much for next-gen graphics and assorted bullshit, but that's just soulless art for a game, even if it's supposed to look like the TV series. Never really been a fan of South Park, so it just adds fuel to the fire, I'm just a bit stunted as to why exactly they picked Obsidian to do a project like this when the creators will be writing a huge chunk of the content. I'd think that cheaper, more fitting, alternatives would be available?

Many people praise Avellone and Sawyer for New Vegas writing , but I'd just like to remind them that the Lead Writer was one JOHN R. GONZALES. People just forget about him because he's not well known, but he deserves much credit!

That would be like giving credit to the guy who mows MCA's lawn.

Gonzalez is a p. cool guy. I know he wrote most of the main characters in NV, but for me, the best thing he wrote was the Survivalist logs, those were the only things that made HH worth playing and they broiught manly tears to my eyes. Also, to Roguey, I actually liked Hanlon's suicide speech as well, I just didn't care for the so called dialogue you had with him beforehand, probably because it was all 'good soldiers sent to their deaths by a corrupt government' kwan propaganda that I don't give 2 shits about. It also didn't help that the quest was tedious as fuck before you got to that point. Sawyer is ok at writing monolgues I guess (I think he also wrote Kimball's speech), he just doesn't get how reactive dialogues are supposed to work and I wish just once he'll write a true character, not infused with his history-lit-fag political views we all live in a post-apocalyptic world so let's learn some latin and talk about diogenes and cato and the bible and shit.

Really looking forward to this. Could defenitely turn out to become utter fucking shit. Too bad then. If somehow not however it's so full of goddamn win as to blow my socks off. I mean, a good rpg with c&c in south park where you can play as 'the jew' being constantly bothered by cartman? Fuck yeah.

More, MCA fans will stop buying obsidian games and South Park fans will call them a shitty developer that ruined a great IP.

Sometimes crazy ideas can result in something pleasant. I wouldn't write off a South Park RPG quite yet.

For the 3rd time in this thread - why the fuck do people think that Obsidian = MCA (ffs - they even give him credit for FO:NV, when that was Sawyer's project). MCA has stated that he is doing absolutely zero work on South Park crpg. Zilch. Nothing. He takes no credit if it turns out good, and no blame if it is shit. He is one employee of Obsidian, and he is working on an as-yet unnamed project, that he has already confirmed has nothing to do with South Park.

As creative director of the company, he takes some blame. He even says one of his roles is to review design documents and playtest all their games and provide feedback. :M

According to MCA's Facebook update, he is working on the South Park RPG full time now. So it's gonna be awesome for sure now. :smug:
