I'm glad they switched from real time with pause to turn based with timed hits. The lesser of two molapops.

"Timed hits" sounds like it requires far more dexterity on the part of the player than pressing the space bar from time to time, especially if there's auto-pausing.

@MMXI - Not that big of a deal for me. My issue is with the level of control (not having to divide my attention two different ways at the same time) and fluidity (not having to break up the action frequently with pauses).

I am pretty sure that the guys from Obsidian after having accepted the contract (and having thought about it), at one time said to each other: "Ha ha ha, there's gonna be some major butthurt on the Codex".

Avellone wrote it on his Facebook. "Codex having a meltdown" or something along those lines. He seemed to be having a good laugh about it. :)

Quicktime shit in JRPG blob takes less dexterity than drunk masturbation. No matter how you spin it its still a stat based endeavor.

So what's the purpose of it? What does it add to a game?

I think the idea is that a lot of people don't like the randomness of dice rolls so the QTE/buttonmash aspect allows them to determine their damage output/chance to dodge based purely on player skill.

I don't really think that kind of thing has a place in turn based games but w/e it has its supporters.

Im not a big JRPG fan or a blob combat fan so I have only played with that type of mechanic a couple times and really it didn't seem to add or subtract much. Its just the industries way of making shallow stat based games
feel more interactive.

Yeah, additionally it's a solution (for good or ill) to the "I'm just sitting here watching enemies go through their turns" problem for people with low attention spans. You have to keep your attention up for the entire battle if you want to reduce damage/dodge/counter-attack.

They could probably make it for the iPad and turn a massive profit.

I just realized that the visuals in the South Park RPG are most likely going to have far less personality and style than those in games made for 22 year old hardware.

I'm sad now. Unless I forget something, this is the first non-indie 2D WRPG since ToEE, and it looks like a bunch of goddamn cardboard cutouts.

All that is missing is the Attack, Spell, Item and Flee buttons, all of which are assigned to the four face buttons of the xbawks.

Funny, I never really liked the South Park art style but I still think this looks way better than Dragon Age 2. Hand drawn 2d with unique graphics for each piece of gear? Pretty nice.

Best-looking Obsidian game yet, and that reflects very poorly on their past work.

You missing the final fantasy spell effects? the great backgrounds at the start of DA2?

South Park has way more personality and style than any RPG made in years. Not that it is a great feat to achieve just that.

This is what I'm missing:

1325686367886.gif
1325686382287.gif
1325686400707.gif
1325686419203.gif

Quirky gestures that serve no real practical purpose, but tell us more about what the characters are like. So far I've seen three facial expressions on the South Park RPG characters: neutral (most of the time), angry (when attacking) and hurt (when hit or knocked out).
