You are not the dark lord.

"You are the judge and executioner of Kyros’ law, acting under the watchful eye of the Overlords Archon of Justice, Tunon the Adjudicator"

You are the school bully who collects lunch money from nerds and threatens to beat em if they don't follow

The trailer seems to imply that you're a defeated hero who chose to serve Kyros.

"Your fate is bound. You will share in the bounty that Kyros provides, or choose to become an example of justice served. You would be hunted, your ways dismantled, your bloodlines ended. Whatever your choice, your service to Kyros is assured."

"YOU HAVE CHOSEN"

I wonder how they're going to explain why you will presumably start out at level 1. In say Kotor 2 (another game where you play as an ex-general) they justified it by having your character getting cut off from the Force.

This somehow feels like Dragon Age Inquisition all over again, hopefully im wrong though.
Um, what a 2.5D isometric game can possibly have in common with DA:I?

And will i be able to play a good character in this world, or am i forced into some evil alignment?
Hopefully, run-of-the-mill good won't be an option. Moreover, if they're serious about this game then AoD should've been their inspiration, as it mostly did a good job at avoiding the traditional good-evil dichotomy.

Amnesia :troll:

Nah way more original than that. Your character will be a badass that gets buried under a pile of rocks for weeks and gets kept alive by their magical armour.

Some evil mage will teleport you out, but you will be severely weakened in the process.

Notice that archer shooting 16+ flaming arrows at once. I think we're going to see a cooler, slicker, more next-gen approach to combat than in PoE.

Looks like shit.

There the same guy with the staff in a few screenshots. I going to assume that's the PC.

But rest, I'm not sure this is an rpg at all...I get a very distinct Diablo feel from all this. It would explain lack of Sawyer and why they needed to go to Paradox for this.

This game's development began in early 2014. How could Sawyer have been involved?

It seems to have a C&C focus:

the choice is yours
A Fatebinder’s word is law, and you decide the fate of the Tiers. Even the smallest of choices shape the land and its people. Tasked with making decisions that truly matter to theTiers and to the factions of Kyros’ army, you will develop a reputation based upon your deeds -- and you will find the world a drastically changed place each time you play Tyranny.

In DAI you played a commander of an army that goes out to do minor tasks by himself, and you are pretty much shoehorned into "good" narrative choices and therefor dont have much freedom in how to play out your character.

Yeah but in this game you play the henchman of an evil tyrant, whereas in AOD you didnt have any predefined political affiliation. AOD worked because in that game, evil worked without any tropes and it was simply born out of greed and fear of the powerful people, but that doesnt work if youre practically working for the fantasy equivalent of the third reich if you ask me.

This on the other hand sounds very much like Geneforge.

Remember that interview?

The CEO also mentioned an older idea called “Defiance” that serves up an intriguing premise.

“We have a great idea for a new world we’ve just started pitching to publishers and we have an older pitch that we really like called “Defiance” which is about a fantasy world where, basically, Sauron won,” he said, drawing a line of comparison between the Obsidian project and J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy series, “The Lord of the Rings.”

He continued, “Everything isn’t happy in The Shire, they didn’t get the ring in the fire and the hobbits are all dead. We think that’s a cool pitch and we hope to have a publisher pick that up at some point.” Dead Ewoks wouldn’t hurt either, Feargus. Just saying.

Defiance = Stormlands = Tyranny amirite?

He couldn't. Because Sawyer was doing something that was closer to his sensibilities. I am sure Obsidian has multiple project in development. Or am I missing something here?

At this point C&C in an Obsidian game is pretty much given. It still doesn't exclude a top down real time ARPG approach. In fact it enchances it, because it adds replayabliity. It's also something that's never been the strong suit of any of the Diablo clones.

Look, I'm not saying that it will be a Diablo clone. But I just don't see why they would create a game that looks like and plays exactly like PoE, with the only exception being the setting and the plot. They're doing something different here and it's not just the fact that you're a bad guy.

Sure, it could be an ARPG. I was responding to you saying you're not sure if this is an RPG at all.

Freudian slip. I've put a lot hours into Diablo 2, and also finished the first one, but I don't really see them as RPGs in the same way as many other here, I think. These games just play very differently from RPGs I'm used to. I'd compare them to what Arcade scrollers like Tyrian and Raptor are to space sims like Tie Fighter and Freespace.
Now, I'm sure if Obsidian makes makes a Diablo like game, they'll put enough RPG in for me to to call it one. The reason Diablo 2 feels arcadey to me like is that it's more reflex based than tactical, and the fact that plot is super linear. Also the fact that you don't actually do anything else except kill monsters. So I'll take that back.

Weeklong embargoes on actual information are a reminder of why I'm so annoyed by the publisher model.

As long as Josh Sawyer is not tasked with the creation of the ruleset/gameplay mechanics I might buy it.

You're in for a disappointment if you think a non-Sawyer Obsidian game is going to have systems radically different from his.

Well, without the baggage of D&D they can have just three stats for this game. Or zero stats. :M

I would preferred a more classic fantasy art-settings, i'm totally not into the same boring annoyng all-fucking-wastelands-deserts post-apocalyptic style with only brown colors
