Is the MM2 SNES version any good
Don't think so. SNES versions generally are crap.

Clearly interface are inferior to PC version and you can't even see all enemies without choosing "monsters" button.

Another M&M1 PC version bug. If you trade for pirate's maps, all your backpack slots, except your new maps, will be converted to useless item. Solution - take only one party member and travel from Sorpigal to Hermit.

In the console versions of MM2 you only have a few buttons instead of a keyboard for controls, the distinction between front row and back row is omitted and you can select your spells by name instead of by numbers.

I've played the SNES version of MM2, it's playable quite well. But I recommend the genesis version, pictures and texts are slightly censored in the SNES version and one spell in the SNES version is so overpowered that if even kills almost invincible monsters instantly.

Hmmm. Don't mind the button / selecting spells issue, but no formation distinction and overpowered spell doesn't sound too good.

Will have to see. I've got the dos emulator for the DS too, so I could just run that I guess.

You can emulate the Sega Megadrive/Genesis on a DS too.

Yeah but the only one I've found that's decent doesn't display the whole screen. Very annoying. Maybe not a bit deal for MM2 though. I'll have to look.

If you find a good nes emulator for the DS it's worth playing the nes version of MM1 instead, maybe there'll be a better sega emulator when you've finished the game.

Finished M&M. Good, albeit somewhat short game. Astral projectors part was really strange. I liked invisible maze, though. It was very reminiscent of similar maze in the Wiz4. I could be mistaken, but maze in the Wiz4 have oxygen mask inside, this is reminiscence of "In the Walls of Eryx" if I ever saw one.

Nice, that was quick!

Were you using a walkthrough by any chance? Because if you go for completing all the lords' quests by yourself, and aren't using someone else's maps to immediately locate where you need to go, it is not so short.

There are several shortcuts to the end though, and in fact only a small number of quests are essential, though of course you don't know this until you beat the game.

I'm voting VII but I've only played VII and IX so it's probably not an accurate comparison until I've played others, since IX was a sad excuse for a game.

Spent many many hours playing VII but the enemies always scared the shit out of me when I was 11 or so haha.

Time to install MM7. Wonder if it's as much of a :decline: as MM6 was.

EDIT: lulz

I catched a flu and played M&M non-stop with temperature around 37-38C

Tried to remain moderately unspoiled, but it was very hard. And stopped mapping wilderness myself after 1/3 of game. M&M very unfair and exploitable in the same time. For example, dunno how to gain King's Pass without Etherealize, 10 Red Dragons was too much for my 15 level party and lava pool was not easy walk too. Also indeed, lord's quests have not any handholding. And part of it very cryptic ("riddle of ruby" springs to mind).

Heh. I found prisoner of Doom accidentally, just traveled forward and forward and voila! secret passage before castle. :)

I can't believe it, all M&M series is (almost) completely finished. I don't want touch M&M9 with a 10-foot pole.

I don't really understand why IX was as bashed as it was. It didn't seem as different as that to the others M&M IIRC (and I played and completed all of the serie except for the first). Apart from the graphical engine and some bugs, it's quite close to VII or VIII (again IIRC, played it when it first came out).

7 is just 6 with more distinct classes, some C&C faggotry and one of the most gamebreaking exploits i've ever seen (you need a cleric for it though).

Yes.

And it's Eeofol. :rage:

Ironically, that's not the only gamebreaking exploit. Thanks to killing the dragon + savescumming + persistent corpse bug I left the starting island with every character decked out in artifacts and high level gear. Found a way to safely take about half the dragon's health too.

Heh. I killed the dragon too. Can your way be the fireball wand by any chance?

Yeah, but there's more to it than that. I go in turn based mode before I enter the cave. After my fastest char shoots the fireball wand, I go into the inventory and pass it on to the next character. This way I can get off 4 fireballs/round. The dragon will focus on killing all the rats first which gives you about 25 free shots on him. Also, it's a good idea to buy a recharge scroll because the wand doesn't hold enough to kill him.

I don't remember how I killed them, but I was higher level I think. It's been a while.

My favorite quest is still Og's. Requires quite a bit of exploration to gather items and clues, and it really isn't obvious, but it's not so obscure that it's impossible to figure out.

The MM7 installation warns of areas for failure, but if you ignore the failure warnings the game should install without problems. I'd then apply Mok's patch after getting the latest patch.

Except for the linearity, vomit-inducing Lith Tech graphics and 3D models, awkward quests, lack of content, tiny-ass locations... it was just pathetic. NWC were forced to deliver a game to 3DO every few months, and it showed. At this point the series was just better being put out of its misery.

And wow this thread keeps on giving and giving, good stuff. I guess people love to come back to M&M because of the exploration, simplicity and lightheartedness, like I said.

Currently I'm completing Underworld, then later when I feel like it I'll go back to the M&Ms. I actually have my super old MM6 save close to the ending and I wanted to complete the game for years.

I had started MM2 on my cellphone (Genesis version), but after what I'm seeing about the console versions ignoring rows I'll go back to the PC version.

The Mandate of Heaven is the best, I suppose. I didn't play Might & Magic 1-5, but I'll try to play in future.

Or Greyface's patch which includes MOK's(but MAY also include some changes to the game mechanics...still trying to figure out if this is the case or I am just seeing crazy bugs!?) and fixes a bunch of other shit as well.

I really tried very hard to get through M&M6 this time but it just is not as good a game as VII. It is a good game but nowhere near VII in overall quality.

I dislike MM7 in comparison to MM6. #6 has those massive dungeons and more freedom in terms of places to go and party development. One of the only things going for MM7 are the good and evil endings.

Agreed on the MM6 dungeons, but I'd argue that MM7 has the character system going for it. It is by far the best in the entire series. Still prefer 6 overall, mainly because I also think it did overworld design better than 7.
