The loading times in 1.7.2.5 are seriously screwed. Most of the time you'll simply hang up on them and there's only a little chance that you'll get through. Of course if that doesn't happen, you have to restart the game and that more often than not leads to spawning on the coast.

Frankly I'm getting pretty damn annoyed with the way Rocket is running the show here. Any criticism on the official forum is drowned in a sea of "IT'S AN ALPHA DEAL WITH IT LOLOL" or "ROCKET GAVE US THIS FOR FREE, HE IS A GOD AMONG MEN". The fact is that there's very little info being released as to what the hell is going on with the patches and putting in changes off the record in the latest one "for the lulz" doesn't really bade well for the game's commercial prospects when it goes standalone.

The entire argument that we can't complain, because we didn't pay for it is pretty slanted to say the least, seeing as the sales of ArmA 2 have propelled Bohemia Interactive to new heights of money mountain and lead to development of the standalone. I'll still probably buy it when it's released, but I'm not sure if Rocket is really the right man for the job.

Well, I've taken a small break, partly because I broke my mic and am having trouble fixing but mostly because I'm trying to learn how to play the base game and also because I've been at it hardcore for almost three months straight and am getting a little burnt out on it. But it is an alpha mod for game that has had issues for years.

I don't really care, I usually jump in the fray and add a new patch without caring too much. Usually I've had good success but if you're paranoid about your 'stuff', then read the forums and watch for complaints from people before upgrading.

That said, I haven't tried the latest patch, maybe I'll get a mic tomorrow and check it out, in the meantime I'm going to try and finish a regular mission for the ten millionth time.

EDIT: That dance was quite funny. I've seen it in early Arma vids before so I'm guessing it's built in. Makes it all the better in a guilllie though.

WTF...they still haven't fixed the artifacts bug? Fail. That's pretty sad since the two main causes are the dead NPC bodies (which is fucking pointless to have anyway) and barbwire (which is bugged any can nearly be impossible to dismantle). Seriously, why the hell didn't they just disable the stupid NPC body spawn and deactivate barbwire until they can fix it? Should have taken like 30 seconds to do that.

And yeah, the DayZ forums are fucking terrible. Most of them actually believe that a standalone version will be ready to go by next month. Idiots.

LOL. I'm assuming he must mean he wants to port it over to consoles after the standalone is completely stable...he wouldn't be able to provide weekly patches for an Xbox version due to the cost and approval process. Plus there's the whole server issue...MS is not going to like that one bit. And then there's the whole fact about consoles being ridiculously ancient in terms of hardware capability.

That part actually seems feasible. Rocket stated that he already ported the mod to ArmA 3 and that he wants to release an alpha version this fall.

I guess it is feasible, but it would be incredibly stupid. Tons of people just bought Arma 2 last month to play DayZ, they aren't going to drop another $20 for a standalone unless a lot more content is added. Right now it's a cool concept with great potential, but little content.

Honestly, I think that Rocket is way too optimistic and is completely over-estimating his teams abilities. Fix the artifact bug that's been around for over two weeks now and add something for people to do besides loot the NW airfield for NVG after they get all their other gear in under an hour, before talking about shit like console versions and standalone.

It's supposed to follow the minecraft model, starting at a very large discount price and going up incrementally along with future patches.

Artifacts are gone in 1.7.2.5. I don't even understand how you managed to get that meaning from Darklife's BAW post.

They're not gone at all. All of the people I play with complain about them. Usually flushing the memory works for me, but others have to go as far as relogging to get them to disappear.

I have no idea how you'd be able to cram anything remotely close to the Arma2 engine onto a console. Maybe if you reduced the world to something the size of Cherno and a couple of barns? It's only 2 square kilometres compared to 225 for the full map on the PC. I can't see a console even handling that, as far as I know next generation consoles have trouble handing anything that isn't a very specifically designed corridor with trickery used to make an illusion of distance in open areas. Maybe the PS4 or the Xbox3 but who knows what that hardware will be like or when it will come out.

They haven't even finished designing the gameplay yet, let alone gotten anywhere near squashing existing bugs, balancing or making it work properly with the Arma2 engine, which itself is in flux and going through problems with the accelerated amount of patches that have recently been released. There have been many new bugs in the last few weeks of beta patches that have killed things like LOD for many people while increasing performance, etc, etc. I can't see a standalone coming out this year at all.

I'm hoping DayZ will be able to accomplish something along the lines of Urbandead. A persistent world full of historical events and memorable players. It really is cool going back now and seeing huge battles from 6 years ago described in full detail on their wiki

What's urban dead?

It was pretty much a MUD with a GUI. Sounds lame but what made it a major hit back from 05-08 were the player interactions much like DayZ. One giant city pitting humans versus Player-Zombies with the occasional banditry one would expect. Back at it's peak there were massive hordes invading malls and such. It was quite entertaining and still functioning today.

What would be on my wishlist were to incorporate some things like barricading, power generators and such. Not exactly ARMA's strength but it's worth thinking about, IMO.

this made it work for me:

"How to go about it;

Load up Arma 2 CO normally. DO NOT connect to a DayZ server through commander/sixupdater. You need regular OA main menu.
Hit Multiplayer
Hit the 'New' button on the bottom of the server list screen
Set the Host to LAN and hit OK
Select Chernarus from the map options, and 01: Deathmatch from the mission options. Click Play/Start
Follow the menu screens till you get ingame into Chernarus in some form.
Escape -> Suspend. Head back to main menu. You should now get super quick load-ins to any DayZ server and almost certainly avoid the loading screen freeze."
