I hope Horus Herpdesy's novels are ignored, as these are try-hard as hell, nevermind with actors.
Horus Heresy would be a goddamn dumpster fire and should exclusively be depicted in short flashbacks.

They should also absolutely not depict the Emperor in any way, shape or form.

Ciaphas Cain is too old-British and high quality to resonate with modern viewers.

Maybe in a better timeline.

I’m concerned about the Amazon tv show. Unlike other franchises, 40k doesn’t really have an overarching character-driven narrative. (The metaplot written by dozens of different writers over decades with completely different creative visions doesn’t count.) It’s a sandbox in which lots of weird stuff happens without being connected. The tv show, unless it’s an anthology series, is gonna have to invent a character-driven narrative or adapt one of the novel series. There are so many ways, aside from wokeness, that this could go wrong. The universe might shrink hugely and get indelibly associated with the character Cavill is playing, audiences might lose interest when his character leaves the show and it continues without him, or any number of other problems. It may seem foreign now, but back in the pre-woke days there were loads of shows that went wrong due to incompetence, behind the scenes drama, or going on way too long.
As a one-off movie there are some options. An obvious one is the First Tyrannic War: a bunch of space bugs are trying to eat an important planet so they need to be stopped is a simple enough plot. Have the Imperial Guard and AdMech in the initial assault on Tyran, a side cameo by the Tau as they're about to get stomped but are saved by the Deus Snacks Machina that is Hive Fleet Behemoth showing up and drawing the Ultramarines away, and once on Macragge there's the Ultramarines proper alongside some Titans, and it allows for a scene with some minor exposition about the still in stasis Guilliman along with a flashback to his duel with Fulgrim.

If they want something longer they can serialize Ciaphas Cain or turn Eisenhorn into a trilogy if they don't want a war movie.

Of if they want to take a risk and see if the world is ready for a couple of robots that squabble like an old married couple they can give The Infinite and the Divine a shot.
Yes, it's less risky too, to adapt a specific campaign from Warhammer, like these one-off Warhammer+ series have been viginettes, rather than damaging something fundamental, by, say, trying the adapt the Horus Heresy right off the bat, and damaging the tree at it's very root. Adapting the First Tyrannic War is a good call. Stick to famous campaigns like the "2nd War for Armageddon", "1st Tyrannic War" or an early "Black Crusade".

Damaging the tree? Even more than Horus Herpdesy is doing?
There are available "pre-made" materials yep, from novels, to tableotp campaigns, to "known" conflicts, etc. Adapting WH30k, before the HH and all of that, would be good after the first live action attempt is done.

So GW now has the rest of the Tyranids from the Levithan box set up for preorder. They're just the sprues from the Leviathan box cut up and sold seperately at a premium. If you wanted everything Tyranid from that box you're looking at the Combat Patrol, the Neurogaunts (which are the second wimpiest unit in the army) and the new Horros of the Hive box, which is just the Neurotyrant and the Screamer-Killer sprues. From what I can tell they don't even get a proper box.

Now, if you were to combine their costs these two sets cost almost as much as the Combat Patrol. So if you were to combine those prices you a number that's about 120% that of the Leviathan box... which also included a bunch of Space Marines.

Oh GW, never change~

This is some of what GW hopes to achieve, in regards to the Cavill series. I don't have a lot of hope, because Amazon is an evil business, but retaining strict creative control over something would be a positive step:

It's business as usual with these guys. Have you seen the prices for the Warhammer Old World starter boxes? A few months down the line they'll release a subset of those for a higher price, just wait and see. I guess I'll keep an eye out on those for when the dwarfs box is released, but I'm not sure I'll bite...

I honestly don't understand how anyone can still collect modern 40k minis at current prices and with all the scalping bs and artificial scarcity tactics.
Like you pay almost 2-10X more for the units i'd have paid for as a kid, for minis that are less fliexbile in their poses and customisation and come with a shocking lack of weapon options because GW and how everything has to be fixed and gay.

Contrast the modern ethos with how 2nd-3rd edition minis were explicitly designed to be inter compatible with each other, so after i'd finish my tactical squad i'd have loads of spare bits to use on something else. So much fun, an example of silly things i did was giving the legs of an assault marine to a tactical sm, as well as biker arms attached to bolters firing sideways. End result? An sm that looked like he was reenacting a john woo movie by dramatically jumping to the side whilst blasting with a bolter in each hand. And yet despite standing out, Brother Akimbo was still just a standard mehreen, my special weapon dudes and sarges were even fancier.
My blood angel leader? A converted captain tycho with swooping hawk wings (so a litteral angel) and a power sword (the way tycho is posing, adding a sword to his free hand is easy). Oh and guess how much he cost? As a special character must have been like 40£ at least right? LOL no tycho cost the same as most other blister packs did back then: 5£.

Personally, if you're into collecting and not actually playing the game, there are far better options.

The McFarlane Artist Proof figures are pretty cheap for being an incredibly solid 7" figure. You can paint them, hack 'em up to increase articulation/posability, etc.

There's also the joytoy line which is more expensive, smaller and a bit more sketchy on quality, but they have a much broader range of models and the paintwork is actually excellent.

McFarlane unpainted figures do seem more up my alley.

Just why does it have to be primaris mehreens?

Anyway enough fantasy in the 40K thread.

I think Orks were one of the best looking factions in both Fantasy and 40K. I will never call them 'Orruks', fuck you GW, more reason to ignore 'Age of Sigmar', and they better never force that shit into 40K like 'Drukhari' and 'Aeldari'. There used to be a lot of craziness, like that picture of a weirdboy vomiting warp energy, or the batshit colour scemes of the past. I contend that they have suffered badly in modern sculpts, losing a lot of their character, such as those big chimp-like grins they used to smirk.

Look at these 1st and 2nd edition beauties, so much character:

K8aMwo6.jpg

By 3rd and 4th edition, they were getting a bit more 'anatomically correct':

But the modern sculpts look like they are too clean from computer-aided-design:

Old Ghazghkull had a lot of character and was instantly recognisable:

New Ghazghkull looks like a generic warboss in Mega Armour:

Squats always had Orks as their arch-enemy, just as in Fantasy. Bringing Squats back should be an opportunity to ignite a renaissance in Ork on Dwarf violence. Longbeard ore miners throwing their power axes into Ork hordes, deep in the tunnels of the ancient mineral worlds of the galactic core. Instead they both are looking more like generic short people in space suits and generic green aliens, so GW need to get that batshit mentality back. Write some novels about Ork on Dwarf waaaaaghs.

Grinny orcs and gobs of the 80s - mid 90s were Kev Adams.

The Ape like orks of gorkamorka and onwards were mostly Brian Nelson after Kev left.

It's not just the CAD, it's the all plastic that hamstrings creativity.

A quote from the last book in the Horus Heresy series. Spoilers for The End and the Death III, so beware or something.

‘Not to me, to yourself!’ Loken says. ‘Make no mistake! That is what you told me years ago! Make no mistake! Well, father, see your own mistake for what it is! Your path is a grim darkness where there is only war and no place for mankind!’
- Garviel Loken

They did it boys, the future really IS a grim darkness where there is only war!

Holy Shit, that was bad...
There's actually TWO drops of that phrase in the book:

This is the end and the death. But it is neither the end expected nor the death foretold. Prophecy is as confounded as time, and farsight is as useless as the plans that men have made.

It is the death of Horus Lupercal. It is the end of heresy. It is the death of one man’s dreams and the end of the Imperium He so carefully envisioned. It is the death of a brief golden age and the end of a promise.

It is the end of a war, yet the death of peace. From here, the long slide begins, the terminal plunge into a grim darkness where the only constant will be war, and the only truth will be pain, and the only living will be suffering, and the only end of suffering will be death itself.

In general... Well, you can't really expect to avoid Daddy problems if you decide to write about the Horus Heresy. I had no intention of and never did actually keep up with the series. I just read the good chaff.

And reading the good stuff was good fun. It seemed there was leeway for writers to write about anything as long, as it was during the Horus Heresy. We still got Scars. Guilliman actually being cool again - literally just because of good writing.

I'm surprised (or maybe I'm not) Abnett didn't drop any sugarcrumbs on Bequin. That's a good thing. I think.

tfw people mad that Abnett didn't end the series with the first line in Horus Rising...

But if anything rhymes the most it's Erebus.

wtb more gaunt's ghosts though

Edit: This book did kinda drag though. I liked Book 2 despite (or because) it being almost its own self enclosed story in the middle of a trilogy plot.

Dude, go look through GW's litigation history.

Yep, still nowhere near as evil as Amazon. This is the company that allowed The Rings of Power to exist. That alone, without even the worker abuse, is already worse than a company merely being greedy. That's passe compared to "trying to turn the most beloved work of modern English literature into a propaganda platform".
