But that's not at all what I said. What I said was I thought it was a bowl of diarrhea but once it was placed in front of me I found it was actually a bowl of canned mushroom soup which I happily finished because I was hungry!

This exactly.

Same for Dishonored, Skyrim and quite a few other modern games.

I think it's due to the screen border getting slightly darker when hidden (vignette). Some people interpreted it as a binary hidden/non-hidden system.

Make of it what you will.

Could be. Could also be more and more darkness comes in from the sides the more hidden you are, like the last Splinter Cell's color draining effect.

We shall see. I'm trying to be super optimistic about this game because I really enjoyed Human Revolution but a binary stealth system would be a huge WTF.

So was I, but that GameInformer article sounds pretty bad. :(

Hope dies last, but I don't know, it's really not sounding like Thief anymore.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the picture in which Garrett was mantling, since it was in first person. I'm pretty certain I've read somewhere that it was 100% first person but I'm not sure where. The third person ruined tension in TDS and made everything a cakewalk.

Why did you play it in third person anyway? IIRC you could play it entirely in 1st person.

But I never said I did, I just said what it did.
So far no binary system is confirmed nor denied, but like it was said before, when the screen gets darker when you're hidden this pretty much means binary. Dishonored got away with it because it didn't claim it was Thief and it wasn't based on shadows as cover, but this would be unacceptable in Thief.

It really doesn't. The darker the screen edges get the more hidden you are... boom, there you go. Not saying it won't be binary, but stop assuming based on nothing.

I would really like if that was the case. Guess I'm a bit too pessimistic. I'm very attached to the gradual system of Thief, since in my eyes it is what makes it the best stealth game in existence (this and sound), and I'm also a bit fed up with this binary stuff we get in stealth games lately.

You know, you're right, maybe it won't be binary, and it can turn out to be a pretty goo...

The region has come under rule of an iron-fisted Baron, who crushes his citizens under the boot of a militarized watch. Propoganda posters speak of prosperity, but this good fortune comes only to the elite.

Players won't likely encounter undead monsters or prowling dinosaurs as they did in the early Thief titles.

attaches to certain points

Focus lights up the screen and highlights pipes you can climb or candles you can put out to darken the room.

upgrade your Focus

fingerprints system that will give you hints on which drawers are worthwhile to look in.

use your Thief skills

like CSI to figure out where the valuables are.

DX:HR team have finished the first Deus Ex only because it have been ridiculously overrated over the last years. It might be a great game, but it's vastly inferior to Thief in almost every possible aspect.

Hoo boy, do you really want to go there? Apples and oranges, man.

I don't know why people say so. DX is a first person stealth game with large maps and multiple paths, same description. Don't even try to argue about how it can actually be played Rambo style because no, it sucks terribly as an FPS, Daikatana levels of gameplay quality.

But nobody played Deus Ex by skulking around the levels whacking people in the back of the head with their baton, either.

There are other forms of FPS gameplay besides "Thief-style" and "Rambo-style".

Deus Ex came to be, among other reasons, due to Warren Spector's rejection of LGS's vision for Thief, which he considered to be too constrained and lacking in player choice.

I do think Deus Ex, Thief and System Shock have more in common than people say. There's a reason those three series are all in my top ten or even top five, they share a lot of the same priorities.

That said there's no reason to assume Eidos Montreal are a bunch of losers with no respect for the series. Whatever you thought of Human Revolution it was obvious the developers wanted to make the most Deus Ex-y game they could given their budget, time constraints and necessary mainstream focus.

Yeah, I'm sure Eidos Montreal has what it takes to make this Thief game a worthy title in the series. I have many doubts about their various decisions, but it's still too early to dig a grave for Thief. Just yesterday I was like a kid in a candy store to quote Garrett when I saw the first pictures, and I still find them marvelous to look at even if they are too washed out, but this is most probably because pitch-black screenshots aren't sexy.

A suggestion to an alternative to the lockpick minigame, would turning the minigame from picking the lock into making the lock picks be preferable? When you go to a door to pick you have a selection to choose from and the potential to break them if you try to force the process faster (accelerate a bar at the bottom of the screen) whilst still in real time and the minigame is either Pick faster but risk breaking a pick, vs be methodical but risk being noticed. The 'minigame' comes from keeping your picks in good condition and supply, and potentially crafting newer types to tackle different lock types which can be purchased, acquired through play for study to craft picks better suited for them.

Of course, popamole is the order of the day, so expect shit on shit with a side of shit, and a cocktail of 5 kinds of diarrhea. Bon appetit!

Heh, just because I'm a sucker for gothic cities. I think they did it right, and I was obviously talking about the artistic direction for The City. :smug:
Garrett still looks like shit though.

First DXHR related material released by Eidos:

Very cool teaser, good atmosphere, some references to conspiracies and it uses DX1's main theme.

Funny, I've never seen it before, but this trailer to fucking Deus Ex looks more "Thief"-esque than anything released so far about Thiaf.

So we're judging games by marketing on the Codex now? Interesting.

It's been going on for a long time now. People who live to bitch will jump at any opportunity. And what better source for dumbass shit to complain about than marketing campaigns? Did you miss all the complaining about Dishonored, a goddamn superhero game, not being like Thief? Just because they dared to mention Thief as one of the influences during marketing.

Except there's nothing there to indicate that that is true. All they said is if the screen goes dark it shows you're hidden. This is a game from 2013. Expecting more than a binary system is futile.
