Saving a game state? You fucking faggots!

There is a saying, it goes something like this: "No matter what you say, I choose the way I play"

Im going to give MM1 a try, even though I wasnt able to get the dosbox version with save states. Not sure how long I will be able to keep at it, will probably go back to MM6/3 after getting burned... or maybe, just maybe I will like it and play it. Here goes!

EDIT: Gave it a try, not being able to see spells anywhere ingame kinda sucks, have to look in the manual... otherwise not bad, while I am certainly going to play the newer ones first, I might come back to play this one after I finish 3-6, those are a lot more enjoyable.

Then again, I might not, because 3-6 will take some time, and by the time I am finished (if I ever am) there will be other games to play (Guild Wars 2 and Diablo 3, I am looking at you).

Just finished Shadows over Riva for a fifth time and installed World of Xeen. Wish me luck!

Good luck man! I found my certificate from New World Computing back in '94 for finishing World of Xeen.

Am I the only person that hand writes my maps for a game with that decent of an automap still?

Just finished MM7 again. It's pretty broken after you get Fly. Actually just any first tier spells that has multiple projectiles like Poison Spray or Sparks. You just go up front with foes and make them swallow all the damage for maximum mana efficiency. Still damn fun though. Good/Evil paths with meaningful differences, actual NPC on NPC combat (elves vs humans, rat vs thieves, troglodytes vs oozes, etc.), random loot whoring (I'm quite a sucker for this feature) and stats/skills mechanics that actually have significant interaction and cross-influence.

And of course graphics and an interface that has aged very gracefully.

Started MM6 today....
Some battles feel like you are playing HoMaM 3, your army vs the enemy army... oh wait, 4 PEOPLE vs the enemy army. And I dont even know where to get some AoE spells...

Pretty fun though.

The mobs are never quite as overwhelming as at the start for that very reason. Honestly, I just finished the massive Tomb of VARN (yeah, couldn't stay away) and even it probably took me less time than that damned Abandoned Temple.

Currently flying over the landscape bombarding helpless dragons with laser fire. Bioware, there's your sense of fucking progression.

Two questions about MM1:

1. Is there any way to determine what direction I'm going?

2. How exactly does positioning in combat work? Usually I can attack the three top monsters with only my first two characters, but sometimes this changes to 4 monsters or 3 characters, 4 characters etc. and sometimes everyone can attack everyone. The manual doesn't explain this at all, but then all I have is some shitty .doc file.

I'm sure there's a compass in the game... I think there's a spell that'll tell you where you are, but I don't remember if it also tells you what direction you're facing. Try it, it's Location (W1-7)

2. How exactly does positioning in combat work?
I assume from your description you understand how it works in-combat and want to know what determines the positions. It's a combination of where you are (indoor vs outdoor) and who has the element of surprise (if you're being ambushed, chances are your back row PC's are in melee range). It's not exactly something you can control, so don't worry too much about it and just try to make the best of each situation.

I think I may have given myself RSI from spamming left click. Seriously my wrist is now sore.

Real Men press the A button :smug:
(and I'm not even joking, found it much faster for mobs than clicking them individually)

A? Movement is on WASD. Attack is on E(xterminate). Or are you a lefty? Otherwise switching the right hand from the arrow keys to the mouse everytime it's needed sucks to much imo, as does moving the keyboard to the left of the desk.

Grats hero Admiral.

Grats hero Admiral.

Movement in MM6 was on the directional arrow keys. ;)

(As in all Might and Magic games)

Indeed. And press Ctrl-A in trashy M&M1 encounters. ;)

You're still in New Sorpigal, right? After you've gathered some cash by clearing Goblinwatch and possibly the Abandoned Temple, as well as by looting all crates found on the overland map, go to Castle Ironfist to show the letter you have to the Regent and get even moar money. Then take a ship to Misty Islands (sometimes simply called Mist). There are three nice magic guilds there. Save before entering the Guild of Fire, as that's where you might get your Fireball. Oh, while at Castle Ironfist, be sure to visit the self guilds and buy Cure Wounds for your healer(s). Use the same save/load as in Mist until the shop inventory has the desired spell.

Probably Xeen. Colorful world with deep involving gameplay and some pretty challenging fights. I wish I could get more into it, haven't really played it in so long... For a while 6 was my favorite, but I think I've really grown to dislike those odd portraits and art style. Gameplay is still solid, but Xeen feels more fleshed out.

Aaah, Mist is my next destination then, thanks :) I finished the area around Sorpigal (apart from the unreachable land over water of course), been wandering around Caslte ironfist, which doesnt have any elemental guild, and north of it is the area with cannibals and circus, which was empty (damn, I was hoping to find Nicolai there). So thanks, I finally know where to get spells for my sorc(tried only one of the ships, forgot to check the other, so thats why I couldnt find any elemental guilds).

Perhaps now I will have a better chance against the dungeons around Ironfist (so far only made progress in Temple of Baa)

Fine job Jimbob. You've beaten me to it. I'm just about to head into the Tomb of Varn.
