The game looks good. Writing and the plot obviously are going to be horrible.

But I think that it can be decent from the exploration point of view.

It's definitely more interesting to me than what Bioware and Obsidian's living corpses might have to offer right now.

I believe in Todd completely. He never lies and never dissapoints.

At first glance, it's a boring amalgamation of other space-themed games, like they had no novel ideas left to develop and needed something to fill in before TES6. Stir in Bethesda's Fallouts, No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, and a pinch of the progression mechanics of the modern Wolfensteins to cook up a bland sludge of a game. How many times can we hear, "X planets to explore!" before it lands with a dull thud, because we've heard it ten times already for ten different games and know it means nothing? It has no character of its own or a strong selling point because it's largely aping other games in the genre without any innovations, nor at least the benefit of the doubt of a developer with a strong track record.

Todd says the game features "over 1000 planets" to explore.. you do realize that is only possible with procedural generation right? I.e. once you have seen a few of them you have seen all of them because it's just the same basic elements again and again.

That's only when you're NMS and you didn't have enough slaves working for years to produce 5,000 assets and ended up with just 50 assets and no matter how you mix those, it all looks the same in 5 hours.

If you have enough money and enough slaves to produce enough assets for the procgen to mix, it can actually be decent enough, definitely good enough to hold your attention over the XY hours you're going to spend with the game.

The bits of story and gameplay shown just fill me with dread and ennui too - it doesn't look like there's an original idea or thought, or any advancement in gameplay, from anything I can see there. Just the same old same old with a slightly more detailed coat of paint.

On the plus side, it looks "serious," not jokey or self-referential or any of the crap TOW was. If the worlds are varied, with interesting creatures, etc., it might be worth a bit of exploration.

Could be. Not gonna buy another epic blockbuster that is build around markers though, completely destroying the entire point of building games around open exploration (not after Zelda and Elden Ring et all have proved this isn't a quirement to crack the mainstream).


On a side-note, looking at the Redfall presentation, their weapon progression looks at least marginally more interesting. Whereas Starfield lets you go through the usual simple upgrade path of adding 10%/20%/30% of bonus damage on top of things -- Redfall's progression seems to be about modifications to weapon spread and ammo magazine sizes and the like too.

But then most of Arkane's games have been the best that's technically come from Bethesda in quite a while. (Unsure whether I'm really hyped about Redfall as well though, looks pretty generic shooter-ish compared to some of their last outings once again).

What are you talking about? Overly colorful games have become the norm, a more toned down palette stands out.
Average game looks like rainbow vomit now, just look at outer worlds.

Rage 2, Far Cry New Dawn, Saints Row NuBoot, Outer Worlds. Probably missing a few, but yeah...

A thing doesn't have to look like a Pride parade to be good art design. When you're looking at that, it could be any old s-f crap in a movie or tv show, you don't get the sense that anybody's thought through how human culture might have changed between now and then, how different it might look, how manners might have changed. It looks like it's based entirely on references from things previously made.

It looks "phoned in."

I think you're reading a little too much from what's supposed to be a demonstration of the customization options in the character creator. Todd even brags that the system is their "most flexible yet." In the next few frames, an NPC is shown that is more representative of Bethesda's playerbase:
These people are literally mad because it's possible to create a black character in a fucking character creator. They inhabit the stereotype of the cartoonishly racist gamer.

It's the apparent absence of the possibility of making people who look like me that's irritating, not the presence of the possibility of looking like people who don't look like me.

"You can make anyone" - except a generic White dude, it seems.

It's pretty much what I expected from Bethesda. The only thing that surprise me was the spaceship. You can customize it and looks like there is a lot of options and choices, even choosing you crew, which is nice; and you can use it to do space combat, which looks awful and hopefully you can avoid all of it.

Okay, I just lost all interest in the game..

Same here, but for slightly different reasons. I agree that this is no RPG and the dialog is what it is (big surprise there). While I don't mind an action game here or there, I like them to be challenging, at least. For example at least somewhat tactical shooters or souls-like games.

I hate everything about the combat in the opening of this trailer. Some guy is just walking around casually, like he is a shopping mall. And then he starts blasting like he's in a Michael Bay movie. No need for any cover. Just stand there and facetank everything. Casually aim at a bullet spongey enemy, press fire for a while, then repeat. Keep walking through the combat area like an elephant and just throw grenades around for no good reason. Also switch weapons mostly because you get bored, not because you actually need to.

I mean, games like Wolf 3D, Doom, and Duke Nukem kind of did all of this decades ago (minus the bad dialog). I played such games to death and I've no interest in a new (but worse) version of "pretty Doom".

(Also for the millionth time fuck Bethesda for what they did to Fallout.)

Go check the trailer again and man the skill tree(or whatever they are called) are really underwhelming.

You ballistic weapon does 10/20/30% more damage! It's even worse than fallout 4. At least in fallout 4 they have some extra bonus other than the simple damage increase.

Action game not RPG
Looks like a straight up FPS game. Okay "with RPG elements".. like every FPS game these days. This is BioShock not Skyrim. The equally twitchy space combat only makes it worse.

Bascially the fundamental gameplay consists of very quickly aiming at and shooting at things, totally about player skill - no different from Doom really,.. a genre of games I don't enjoy at all. I find it mindlessly boring and to be frank I suck at those games too because my reaction speed / hand-eye-coordination isn't that great.

I am actually kinda sad, because I did like Skyrim but this certainly isn't "Skyrim in space" (which sounded promising to me). It's a straight up action / shooter game.

I mean sure Skyrim is real-time too but everything moves and reacts way slower so that "move, aim, and shoot quickly" is certainly not the challenge / gameplay in Skyrim.

Don't get too excited.. I expect this "crew" to be pretty much meaningless stat modifiers e.g. the only attribute your "gunner" crew member will have will be that he increases the fire rate of your ship by 10%

Oh and of course you can click on him when you walk around your ship and when you do that he will say "Hello, captain". Yea, I absolutely expect that will be it.

If Bethesda went really wild they may have recorded some voice lines for the crew commenting on completed stages of the main quest e.g. "What do you think this stange artifact we just found is, Captain?" (rethorical question, you won't even be able to answer). Yea, really, don't get excited.

Actually I wasn't even expecting the crew to have stats, I was just thinking choosing crews from the faction you joined, and just purely cosmetic. If there is stats invovled it's already beyond my expectation.

Still it's a nice touch and a system modders can expand on.

Basically I view everything from Besthesda like this: if it's a system modders can expand upon, it's a good addition.
