So strange how a team like Bethesda would not feature a single NPC that even resembled themselves. Its embarrassing really. If that is a look at the future Bethesda sees for humanity, It a bleak future indeed. Inclusivity means excluding the largest part of your playerbase.

I thought it looked Ok until they started to brag about over 100 Solars Systems and 1000 Planets. That's when i just gave up.
Like, do we really that much ''content''? Probably not , especialy because it's literaly impossible to put meaningful content on them.
Why would they put meaningful content on the planets when the modders will do it for them? :hearnoevil::gumpyhead:

Thoughts as I watched the video:

  • Bland art direction.
  • Tedious busywork of mining rocks
  • Bland, non-diagetic HUD
  • Generic overorchestrated soundtrack
  • Murderhobo simulator
  • HP bars rather than bodyparts
  • Generic collect the alien artifacts plot
  • Bland skill system "rifle does 20% more damage" perks

As much as I rag on Star Citizen, SC is more fun than this game looks. At least this game is singleplayer, though, so you don't need an internet connection and you can mod it and play at will.

Building your own outposts could be cool, though.

How much spaceship customization is there? Okay that's an improvement on SC.

Can you seemlessly go from ground to orbit like in SC? Or is this like Freelancer where the planet locations are seperate zones and there is a loading screen going into space?

Okay they're going for SC scope. Will the planets have more going on them than SC planets? Could Bethseda have really handcrafted the millions of square miles of land in the game with meaningful stuff to do? Or is there a similar level of copy-pasting and random generation?

Final thoughts: Hm. Not sold on the game. We'll see. I think I'd need to watch GopherVids getting his hands on the game for a few hours to formulate a better opinion.

You act like aging is always this super slow process. Sometimes shit in your life ages you quicker. Unless of course you are just gaming from your cave with no worries.

Could not even bear to "legit" finish it. Uh gonna pirate it maybe. Rusty is simping for it no surprise here.
Universe is RNG, right? Zzzzz
PS SC is SCAM in my book. So this at least will be out, with bugs, but out.

I don't mind the tech, I'm just struggling to zero in on a core visual identity to it, artistically speaking. Some of what we saw made me think of Mass Effect or Star Trek, some of Cyberpunk, some made me think of Star Wars... You'll say these are distinct areas with their own looks, sure, but it just looks a little to heterogenous, like there's no common aesthetic throughline. None of it is terrible but this "NASA-punk" thing, I just don't feel it, you feel me?

Don't know how much the game will reflect this, but the trailer felt like it was trying to split the difference between so many different kinds of players and scifi fans. As you mention some assets didn't quite match the NASA-punk look the ships exemplify. I wish the alien flora/fauna looked a bit more groundedly extraterrestrial if that makes sense. It looked too reminiscent of No Man's Sky. The HUD also seemed a little overbearing but my guess is they wanted to make sure the gameplay stuff was clearly communicated and we'll be able to dial that down in the settings. Overall the UI does look sharp though. Ship customization and space flight looked on point though which is a big win.

But my biggest fear is that they're going to try too hard to appeal to the visual novel category of RPG fans. I think I must be one of the few people out there that absolutely despises long conversations of character heads talking at you. It has never been an interesting way to engage with RPGs and it's not a particularly immersive way to simulate human interactions either. I also really hate heavy-handed storytelling with an overemphasis on character/set piece moments. To be completely honest, I think the more passive and environmental way things were handled in Morrowind and Skyrim is just an outright superior way to do things for exploration, ambience-fueled game like the ones Bethesda makes. I would not want to see Bethesda try to replicate Bioware/Obsidian/CDPR storytelling. I really do not like that style.

If there's anything that demonstrates Bethesda might be trying to appeal to too wide an audience it's tweets like this denigrating what is clearly one of the best features shown in the gameplay trailer. If you don't want to customize your own space ship, I really struggle to understand why you're interested in Bethesda games in the first place.

Ok
On a more serious note, the game looks fine - a slightly improved and more polished update of Fallout 4 mechanics
I think what will fundamentally make or break this game will be the campgain/quest and exploration/world design
And imo the setting they've created will have a major impact on that - as the way I see it, one of the major reasons their Fallout games didn't work was because Betheseda didn't really understood that universe (or choose not to)
A new IP and setting can provide them the possibility to correct those faillings (if it will is another question)

Plus, despite all our bitch and moaning about their decline, it is impressive how despite their massive success all the way back with Skyrim or even further back with Oblivion, Betheseda are still the only developers to make fully interactable, sandbox RPG's
Outside of them barely anyone attempts to do it, and when someone tries it usually crashs and burns (CP77)
I mean just think about all the Dark Souls and Witcher 3 clones that have come out over the last 11 years, now try to remember how many Skyrim clones we've had in that period

It's just a joke. Chill.. The Ship build system looks like legit fun compared to the rest of the features.

I was about to comment something about it, the game really does seem to lack...idea? Theme? It's just 'Next big Action RPG by Bethesda, in Space.' It hasn't got even the tenth of Skyrim's advertising power. No extremely memorable trailer like Skyrim, no marketable feature like Dragons or even clearly known 'snow people' characteristics like horned helmets etc.

This game is extremely mismanaged PR wise. Yes, there is gameplay, trailer, people are talking about it...but it doesn't grip. It's just RPG in space. No great idea behind it. It's bland. Nothing to talk about. No space leviathans to shot at, big bad to fight, mysterious secret to uncover...There is literally zero personality to this game. Even Mass Effect Andromeda did it right with clear 'Exploration/Colonization of New Galactic' theme.

Seriously, now that I've noticed it's baffling how bad it is. This might severely impact the sales, why aren't they advertising it?

Taking into account the unimpressive video, I would wager that they have very little to show.

Are you even some magical chosen one? Or are you just some guy who thinks it makes sense to walk openly towards large groups of heavily armed pirates?

Does the player character STILL really not have feet? Jesus christ

Not excited that the first thing an NPC says is "We have a lot to talk about."

Diplomat power: since shooting is all anyone does, speech will be good to stop someone shooting at you so you can shoot them more easily when shooting them.

After buying a skill, you increase it not by getting xp and spending points on it, but by using it, racking up kills, and completing challenges. That's a good idea.

I love building bases and hiring NPCs to staff them. Looking forward to exploring this feature. Hopefully there will be gameplay reasons to visit them, base defense gameplay etc. and not sheerly look at this pretty thing I made.

Ability to customize my flying base looks good. My natural expectation with having a crewed ship would be that I can assign a pilot and a gunner to take care of space combat for me ... not looking forward to the inevitability that I am the only one who can fly the damn ship or fire the weapons.

I am 100% fine with "find the 10 macguffins" being the main quest.

No Man's Sky could have been a good game if the systems weren't all shit. Will inventory management here be completely awful again, for example?
