Embrace and extend. No labels, man! It's neither an MMO nor a single player game. It is something so new and amazing that it defies all categories! It truly appeals to everyone! No matter what kind of game you like this is just like it! Blah, blah, blah. We've heard it all before, but this is the first kickstarter I've heard about that uses standard publisher-esque marketspeak. It's marketing driven. Garriot doesn't give a shit about the game itself. He probably doesn't play games anymore. This isn't about a new and unique vision for a game. It's just a method for Garriot to buy more yachts and oceanfront homes. You can never lose money by underestimating the intelligence of the general public.

I am genuinely surprised this has reached $340,000 already.

Edit: Someone should make sure Chris Taylor doesn't hang himself if this mess of a Kickstarter is pulling in this kind of money while running at the same time as Torment.

Wait, isn't Richard Gariott filthy rich? Why does he need this?

Why do rich people need more money? In any case, KS is a good publicity stunt, even a failed one. Successful Kickstarter is a marketing campaign that pays for itself and even generates profit.

So I read the Kickstarter page, and it's weird. Player housing a core feature of this game? Not much mention of roleplaying systems in a supposedly "reinvented" RPG.

To be fair, you can simulate player housing, real estate etc. economics in a roleplaying system. The only real detail there is that the game uses a classless system.

@Derek, would you prefer subscription? We've talked to a ton of people and most seemed to prefer an opt-in micro-transaction system to a mandatory subscription. Actually, I suspect most want the game for free, to not have a monthly subscription, and no money ever but that just can't happen. :(
No worries, we're shooting for a fair shake on all that stuff and avoiding selling power by most everyone's definitions. We're also trying to avoid artificially punishing people just to extract money from them to make the punishment stop. That is very much a "social game" mentality and does not build help build the kind of player base we're looking for.
Give us a shot, we'll keep revealing more info over the coming weeks and hopefully we'll address your concerns. - Chris

Jason, We have a number of elements still coming for PVP! We will absolutely have an opt-in PVP element, PVP scenes where anyone who enters is fair game, and "rabbit and fox" missions at a minimum. The "Rabbit in Fox" missions are ones where you take a mission/quest of "escort person/deliver item/protect area" knowing that doing so will PVP flag you. This will also bump up your relevance ranking(what we use to determine who can be seen by a player in the game) so most everyone will see you immediately. To make it even more exciting, other players are incentivized to stop them! Basically the system gives the more savage players lots of rabbits to chase and will hopefully satisfy, at least to some extent, their need to kill!
Also, we have discussed making the reward for such quests increase over time so they become more and more attractive and other tweaks to make sure we can keep both sides happy. - Chris

Gotta admit, Little Lord Fauntleroy managed to defy expectations. He's a true innovator.

New Genre: The Single Player MMO.

Definitely unfortunate campaign for Shaker, their hearts were in the right place but the presentation was lacking at the beginning got better towards the end though, was really invested but, last I heard Loot Drop had to lay off some of their staff and Brenda is interested in doing a Table Top Shaker and Tom has moved on to other projects(Had a failed KickStarter project recently), so looks like I will have to wait many more years for a Wizardry like game :( and I am not going near Cleves project, the man is deplorable!

You mean, Single/Multi-Player where a internet connection with the playerbase affects the gameworld? That's hardly a new by concept and, indeed, it could prove to be interesting. Its like taking what Dark Souls did (recently, with respects to player invasions and covenants) to a whole new level, though what is being envisioned by LB just isn't for me. But I'm always intrigued by the stories that these sandbox online games produce.

Diablo 3 required you to log in to the interwebs to play single player. I'd say it's something that's worrying me.
