So now that it's official, can we move this shit to MMO discussion and let catamites to further discuss it there?
It is stinking up the RPG discussion.

Garriot is victim of the advanced stages of LARPingtitis, caused by a subtype of the LARP virus that only affect game developers and can cause: megalomania, delusions of being a genius revolutionary developer that knows everything, narcissism and a complete lack of contact with reality it is a virus that affected once great game developers like Jonh Romero and Warren Spector. At the beginning Richard Garriot interpreted Lord British, now, Lord British interpret Richard Garriot.

The game is done with good intents. On paper, it sounds good and I liked the (easy) blurb about NPCs with exclamation marks on their head and just needing to follow the quest markers on the compass.

What are you talking about? Is it something in the video (I hadn't had the chance to watch it yet)?

Yes that's in the video. Give it a watch.

I can't until tonight. The computer I am on has no audio. Anyway, the game has a quest compass and exclamation marks on the heads of important NPCs?! Why?

Is a single player RPG with some MMO features a MMO ?

The interview was interesting, only if to learn he is still pissed for having been killed in UO.

I feel pretty smug about my diagnosis of Garriot as a shameless, talentless huckster now

This is kinda making my ideas about the future of kickstarter sour though, because this is pretty much evidence it's an unsustainably retarded fad/bubble. Clearly being used as negative cost advertising, not legit patronage for stuff that couldn't even get a loan otherwise. I guess some shit will change when Ouya blows apart.

No there is less hand holding. There is NO GIGANTIC ? marks above players heads. I forget any mention of a quest compass though.

It is in some ways some little baby step incline for MMO's.

It hasn't. Garriott was criticising the games that did that.

Wow, is anyone watching the official livecast?

I had no idea Garriott was so arrogant about his career. Countless references to being "the first person to create a computer roleplaying game" or "I innovated once again with Ultima 4." We get it. Anyone sitting here watching you talk about yourself on a live stream knows your history.

I also thought this was supposed to be about the game, not him telling his history from the first time he took a shit without a diaper to Ultima 9.

Yeah, this will fall on deaf ears. Everyone knows that the RPG was invented by Bioware with KotOR, and Bethesda invented the Hardcore RPG game genre with The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

Garriott's doing a lot of live press/interviews today. I don't think any other KS out there witch this much fan interaction on the first day. He's definitely been a good salesman his whole life.

He keeps saying it's NOT an MMO but then he talks about Facebook friends, someone setting up a blacksmith shop you can visit, a friend fighting a monster you can join, PvP, etc. o_O

It is a single player game with a persistent universe that syncs each time you log in, and with players who can join your party.

The thing is, it's designed to be primarily played single player but they're adding this multiplayer crap for people that want it. You can apparently play completely offline without any multiplayer junk in your experience at all.

So yeah, at least there's now a chance it could be "good for what it is". I'm thinking a slightly less stinky U9 as a single player experience.

I understand that but everything he says that describes the game screams MMO to me.

It's true that he's talked almost exclusively about the online components so far. Literally nearly the only thing he's said is that you can play it solo if you want, and the story involves a new mysterious force acting on the land. That's about it.

It is multiplayer, from what I gathered, but not massive. Also, it has xome shared elements between all instances of the program. For example, if someone buys a house in their game, that house is bought, and no one will be able to buy it (unless he later sells it). He could then turn it into a shop or something like that. There is also talk of having people join your game for PvP in some situations, I think. Like, if you take a contraband quest, other people might join your game and try to bring you to justice. Although it seems the game will work offline too, so maybe they will make all that stuff optional?
