Nope, we can play main game and Berlin campaign without steam or any other DRM. Everything else after will need steam though.
DRM aside, the Steam version will be the only version that allows user friendly patching, the DRM'less version is required to download in full again from their site every time there is a patch, there will be no patch downloads.

Wow, they really want us to use steam it seems...

So my options with this are to install Steam for it or not remove it from inventory? Well, if they really want me to make that choice...

June 2013 release date is getting increasingly unlikely with every day. Even if they do manage this, I expect a buggy mess of a game that will require multiple patches to work well.

I do have some hope for the editor, though. I have a few ideas I will never have time I'd like to implement using it.

Stupid me broke down and bought Witcher 2 during a Steam sale... after installing it the fucking thing keeps trying to redownload the game for *updates* . My monthly bandwidth cap can't take it... so i will buy the game off gog and give valve the finger. Ya, I was weak and stupid....
Just in case; as AstroZombie pointed out, you can redeem your Steam key on gog without buying it again.

Anyone ever thought that Arcanum could possibly be...the prequel to Shadowrun.

Earthdawn is the prequel to shadowrun. Several earthdawn personalities made appearances in official Shadowrun campaigns. The Harlequin campaign was about a pair of immortal elves carrying on a 1000-year vendetta

Check out their board; people are already playing user made modules, and the thing seems to be pretty stable from what I've seen/read.

Good to know. I don't really have time to surf message boards while at home, and most of them are blocked by my corporate firewall when I'm slacking at work. This is good news.

Steam is bearable these days, i.e. it doesn't bother me very much if I ignore it. It used to be annoying as fuck, Play Offline & Do Not Update never working, always crashing.

Yes.

I keep it offline, don't sign into friends and turn off the in-game interface. That makes the damn thing complete invisible except for shopping for new games or downloading a patch/game.

The DRM is stupid but irrelevant anyway as any trip to TPB will show. If Valve told me I no longer owned those games I would laugh at them and go download them anyway.

I hope you guise like short combat-with-occasional-speech-check-focused games.

Probably 12 or more hours. depending on how careful you are.

We don't have plans to specifically release info about character creation - we're heads down in tuning and bug fixing.
Stealth skill is no longer in the game. Just didn't come together and we needed to focus elsewhere.

This is actually good news for me. Cutting out features that aren't working, not going too wild with content.

I'm pretty confident that means there's no stealth period. You walk into rooms and start blasting.

That's pretty funny, does that mean the enemy alert/unalert feature just doesn't exist any more? That was advertised pretty prominently in their proof-of-concept video, kind of crazy to just see it vanish entirely.

I find it funny how these guys can only make a 12 hour game with a 1.8 million budget, but LogicArtists can make a 20 hour game with $80K.

As we've learned from AAA studios spending hundreds of millions to make 6 hour games, money does not guarantee impressive results. In most cases it's kind of a reverse correlation, actually.

In general bots only "share" information across lines of sight, except in some cases. Most exceptions to this rule will be invisible to the player, as they are completely behind the scenes and AI only acts on the shared information once LOS is established. Sound also carries in SRR, so firing weapons can bring guards running, AI very low on health will occasionally call for help too.

The primary tool the player has for interfering with this is melee combat. Quick, silent melee kills can progress you quite stealthily through a level. As long as you don't trip any alarms as you do it.

Deeper information on AI behavior will posted on the wiki, I'll try to remember to link it here once it's up.

Also, for those complaining about "no custom art assets", there is actually a fairly simple way of getting new props into your campaign; all you need is a proper size png and setting the physical parameters in the editor... once they fix the UI, anyway. Right now the add prop dialog is a bit buggy, but you can achieve the same effect through some hexediting :p

I'm dissapointed about the campaign lenght, at least they will be adding a new campaign "soonish" after launch.
