I haven't played as much as everyone else, but a lot of people are reporting that ranged combat is a laugh as long as you have a Fighter to engage enemies. Not surprising considering the insane amount of damage that Arbalests and Arquebuses do. An Arquebus does 4-7 times the damage of a Hunting Bow (11-19 vs 43-79 or something).

That's an AI issue. If your arquebusiers are really doing that level of MASSIVE DAMAGE then the AI should know that it needs to take the disengagement attack and run at them.

No that's not it at all.

Over the course of X seconds, the Arquebus is doing _way_ more DPS than a Hunting Bow at pretty much ANY DT. A Hunting Bow does _sweet_fuck_all to a Plate wearing character, but an Arquebus will still be doing like astronomical damage.

For what value range of X?

It's slower, so if one of those fast enemies that everybody's complaining about closes in before you get another shot...

P.S. Adam Smith says Pillars is better than Witcher 3 in a post about Witcher 3: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/20/gamescom-witcher-wild-hunt-trailer/

and reveals they have an article about Pillars coming up later today.

The initial damage (from your first shot) already does four to seven times the amount of damage as a Hunting Bow (even more if you take +% Might into account).

For a Hunting Bow to catch up, they have to attack four to seven times (more if the target has DT) to even catch up to your initial blow from an Arbalest.

Your scenario where the ranged attacker gets rushed by a melee opponent relates as much to the archer as it does to the arbalest.

At first glance, I think Josh's damage ratios are all out_fo_wack.

Easy fix Sensuki, the reloading time for the guns is going to be much longer.

From what I remember Obsidian saying a loooong time ago, guns were going to be one of those weapons that fires 2 to 3 times during a long encounter, and vs the Wizard's Veil.

Do people feel it'll be possible to get this out in 2014(in a good state) or is there too much work to be done?

It's not an easy fix. One shot from a normal arbalest does enough damage to completely KO a level 1 character. Can you even get an Arbalest at level 1 ?

Five characters walking around with arquebuses and arbalests will pretty much kill most units in one volley.

Granted that you can do this in the Infinity Engine games as well, but in the IE games, various melee characters were extremely valuable and generally dealt more damage per hit than ranged characters.

I thought guns at least would be an exception to the rule. If they supposed to be expensive and very powerful one-shot wonders, it would make sense to make their damage huge, but static, without the option of pumping it up even further with stats or spells buffs and potions. Otherwise their damage would be just too insane, and that would drag combat into strange direction. I mean, if gun does 5-7 times more damage than a bow, then what do you do with bows, or even with HPs to balance all that out.

What Osvir said isn't an easy fix.

And no doubt.

I like that Sawyer is using discrete damage ranges, but I think the damage numbers required are really janky due to the DT system. The DT system makes it difficult to use familiar values in which we (and he) has more experience with. Might have a fiddle with some of the math another day.

Hmm, not a bad idea actually, but then where do you stop? Should gun accuracy also be unaffected by increased Dex?

Accuracy penalty and decreased range with a not so large damage nerf could make it more interesting than just making it so that bow and arbalest have comparable dps.

As Liston said, some inherent penalty to accuracy and range that you could improve with stats dedicated to aim probably won't hurt.

Heck, it actually gives a chance to make some stats than Might more viable.

Why are there only 8 inventory slots per char when the UI is clearly set up to have 2 rows of 8? Expandable with bags or something?
