I voted for Fallout.

Most of the reasons have been said already, but I find it puzzling that the story of Fallout is not given justice.

I think Arcanum had the worst story of the three. It's a postmodern nightmare, an attempt to subvert the status quo of the "chosen" one storyline. But in doing so, it just proves that the story is derivative. It's a parody of RPG storyline; a good parody, but not that great a story.

When I was young, I thought PS:T had the best story and writing of all the RPGs I played, but nowadays, it feels very convoluted and fatty for my tastes. The long descriptions are too baroque, too sure of themselves that it comes off as condescending.

Then there's Fallout. The story is not about a Supervillain trying to conquer the world. That's just a subplot. If you think about it, the real theme of Fallout is actually the same as that of PS:T--what can change the nature of a man? You, the Vaultdweller, needs to ensure your community's survival. Tasked to explore a world beyond the Platonic cave, upon the Vaultdweller's return, the question appears: did I change because of the world, or because of myself?

There are no extra long expositions, no direct telling--the game itself, Fallout itself asks you the question PS:T had to answer through a sprawling story and long dialogues. Yet Fallout did it, even with a time limit.

Arcanum and Torment are neck and neck!

Anyway, something I'd like to address here is the combat systems the three games use.

Fallout's combat would be perfect if someone would replicate JA2's combat system in it, or even mod the entire game into JA2. The inventory system would also fit Fallout perfectly, and having direct control of your squad (well, apart form Dogmeat) would make it HEAVAN.

Torment would have ideal combat if somebody would mod in the ToEE (or IWD) combat system and also design encounters to be as good as BG2's encounters. It's a shame that all the other IE games had better combat and encounter design, so this would be only fitting.

Arcanum would have perfect combat if somebody would mod in Diablo 2's combat system and skill trees for gaining spells or tech skills. I choose to improve Arcanum's real-time system here because, in my opinion, the real-time system is better than the turn-based system and it fits the nature of enemies you'll be facing better.

Now, somebody get to work on this.

An amazing struggle so far, folks! Beaten and bloody, Fallout has wrenched itself from the fray to rise to the top, standing alone while its two siblings continue to bitch-slap each other silly.

Will this be the outcome? Is Fallout truly the best CRPG ever to have existed in the Codex' hivemind? What a battle it's been, truly epic!

It will take a miracle comeback for either Arcanum or Torment to catch up. We are very near a decision! Any last stragglers? Have you all had your say?

*the tolling of the bell is imminent*

I chose fallout because I get to really play the role of my character, since it is in first person perspective. Also, the graphics are MUCH better than the other 2 games. I couldn't even finish them because they were so shitty looking.

Fixed.

Interpretation of the poll results and comments made in this thread:

#1 RPG - Fallout because the combat was awesome and blowing holes in people was tons of funs! Fallout 2 has greatly improved the original by greatly increasing the number of people to kill.

#2 RPG - Torment because the next best thing to awesome combat is following a linear story.

#3 (out of 3) RPG - Arcanum because it didn't have awesome combat and didn't have an awesome linear story, which is, like, lame and explains why most people didn't play it.

Combat: Fallout
Story: PS:T
Quest Design: Arcanum
Setting: 3-way tie

Fallout is eliminated due to combat being the worst part of all 3 games.

PS:T is eliminated due to story being possible in any medium, and actually weakened due to being a game.

Arcanum wins because quest design is unique to video games and essential to RPGs.

I stopped reading here.

Many people have already said all that were to say
Fair be fair Fallout is the best in many respects, but I have played Arcanum more, because of the different builds available, but in the end Torment was the best experience.
Yes I am gay for Avellone, and I don't care.
