The Soldier has a skill that actually does Taunt enemies, but reports online have said that it doesn't work.

Which one? -> http://grimcalc.com/Mastery/Soldier
I haven't noticed a skill that does taunt. When a friend of mine and me play online together we usally have the problem that he (Blademaster, dualblades DPS) sometimes gets beaten more than me with my pure Soldier Tank.
Tanking for your squishy friends is not possible at the moment :(

How does monster agro work in GrimDawn? Is there any explaination? Is it just "Who makes the most damage"?

Simply put there is no actual agro system. Normal cannon fodder enemies will agro whoever they target first. Champion monsters will do the same, but there's a 50/50 chance that they'll switch agro you if you debuff them. If they do switch away from your pets and target you, they won't stop. Boss monsters are whatever. Just fuck my shit up or not. During Warden he erratically switched between me and my pets even if I stood there doing nothing. I forget what the monster was called, but the final boss of the new "roguelike" dungeon in Act 4 was nice enough to target my pets, but I tried to speed things up with Curse of Frailty, after which he relentlessly ran after me and never switched agro again.

Not true. If you get aggro if you run around a bit and let your pets smack them around a bit often the enemies will switch their focus back on your pets, get caught up in them, etc. It's not DPS aggro like in a MMO, though. Also, some pets have taunts as well so they can taunt enemies.

Almost everything dies quickly anyways between debuffing/buffing with devotion skills, etc. Damage is fanastic, and I'm in ultimate currently.

Do whatever works for you, for me the skills/tactics I describe work great though and I can clear areas very quickly.

See what I said above. There's no actual agro system and in all my 100+ hours that I've put into my pet characters I've never seen the AI switch back away from me to my pets unless it was a spaztic enemy to begin with who'd just go and whack whoever regardless of anything. Then there are the determined boss monsters who will never let you out of their sight once you enter their radar.

Happens all the time for me, even boss monsters. I let my pets run in, give them a sec to start hitting shit, cast a few debuffs/vines, which more than likely proc the pet buffs, dmg goes through the roof, everything dies. If a monster does get aggro'd I run in circles so that my pets still hit them regularly (which isn't hard since their total speed is high and vines kills the enemies run speed) and they die fast too.

*edit*

Ember claw supposedly has taunt in it.

I forget which one, but I think it was Fighting Form, 2nd tier of Cadence. You wont find it there though since GrimCalc hasn't updated it yet. It was added with the latest build.

I noticed that beasts will completely ignore you if you have pets around and don't attack anyone. You can run in front and then pick up stuff and zone out mentally around beasts. But if you cast one debuff (even Occultist that does not damage) they all go beserk and beeline for you ignoring pets.

When fighting humans they will attack you first no matter what you do if you are in range. Sending pets forward and staying back will keep you safe but being part of combat will make them attack you always.

Bosses switch between attacking you and pets.

That's a good point, some enemies do appear to behave differently. Those cthothians with the huge axes? They seem to want a piece of me no matter what I do :P

A less cynical idea is that the agro AI is somewhat sophisticated and that different monsters have a different way of behaving with agro.

Anyway, here's the Soldier skill that can taunt.

It was Blade Arc, not Cadence.

Sword n Board Soldier with the passives and skills that increase block chance + the Anvil constellation for Targo's Hammer is literally a Hammerdin build.
Also, shields are OP as fuck right now and there is a nerf comming for them in near future. 100% block chance and retarded block recovery are achievable right now.

That ought to do nicely, don't wanna pick a too gear-reliant build early on since I usually have the worst luck with random drops. Does everything get wiped when 1.0 comes out?

As far as I know there will be no wipes. Besides, the character is stored on your computer so no real wipe possible.

Yeah I was thinking more in terms of save incompatibility but I suppose they would've announced that.

There really aren't any builds that you can't do without certain gear. You'll do better with good gear, but you aren't outright cockblocked from any particular style like in PoE or Diablo. One of the beauties of Grim Dawn, really.

Edit: This just dropped

:yeah: Fucking look at the difference in stats. Holy christ.

I'm currently playing an Elementalist - http://grimcalc.com/build/GchH8U
(gearing for lightning dmg)

It feels like a trap assassin from Diablo 2 . I thought that maybe it wouldn't be viable, but I was wrong. Thermite Mines are hard to use though and I would've liked they had a little bit more AoE, since they are almost useless against bosses. I'll probably go Stun Jacks with the leftover points, to keep up with the theme. Maybe Wind Devil (1) + Maelstrom (12) for the last 13 points.

IT (since there's only one, not going occultist & shaman is gimping yourself) is not crummy in the sense that it's unviable, it's just unfocused and all over the place. Aesthetically incoherent as well. You just run in circles casting CoF and let the pets do the DPSing, bosses are the same. It's quite a long way from a summonmancer in D2, though you still ran in circles casting curses :p

Hobo Elf I thought pet builds were kinda crummy? How do you fare against bosses?

Like Lacrymas said, pets are very, very good. It's just that the Occultist mastery is erratic in its design and doesn't have focus. It tries to be a pet / spell caster / debuffer all at the same time because it was designed with the idea in mind that they'd only have 5 masteries in Grim Dawn. It also seems to be inconsistent with the games lore. The Shaman mastery is kinda the same, although it is intentionally made as a filler mastery to fill out some niche void, be it 2h weapon skills, lightning or cold damage and pets. The Shaman doesn't feel erratic and incoherent in its theme, though.

So we had a 3 man party going through elite difficulty yesterday until the Homestead Hive Queen. Now what the game was telling us by the legendary drops: Do a fucking caster char (5 Chaos/Vit Legendarys, 2 Aether). We were 2 Blademasters, 1 Soldier btw.
I'm seriously considering a Witchgun build now.

How's the multiplayer in this? As in can i hack'n'slash shit with some codexers? I am tempted to get something that requires the intellect of a fish to play and which i can play with someone, is this worth it?

Also is there a viable soldier/nightblade build?

Well sad thing is, if you play with some random guys there always is a possibility for savegame hackers, because whole character data is stored on the client computer. Otherwise If you have some trusted guys to play with it can be pretty fun
