Don't think he's stupid, just more concerned about getting a succesful kickstarter than anything else. Most people see those stretch goals and don't think much of the negative implications.

I get a greedy vibe. Guido didn't learn his lessons and ignored good advice. Too proud, I guess. Passing up on this one.
I'll buy the game when it's released and if it's good.

Don't think he's stupid

the empirical evidence seems to speak against that estimation
I think stupid is who throws money at something like this, which looks like 2/3 ego boost and 1/3 desire to make a game.

Looks like the classic move of introducing something everyone hates then removing for great praise that some admins have perfected.

It's not that different from what Larian promised with the NPC schedules, but it's certainly a somewhat ambitious stretch goal.

Adding waypoints to some NPCs is similar to changing your combat engine? Hoo boy.

No, planning to introduce full NPC schedules, including behaviour, housing, reaction to day/night cycle & weather, etc. and including that into quests is similar in scope (if not larger) to adding some non-linearity/open-world aspect to the game.
I do not expect a sandbox here, more something as we had e.g. in Shadows over Riva.

As for the optional 3rd person perspective in combat, well, that is something I don't know what to think about either right now. Waiting for some additional info there.

Yes and no; those things require a lot of work in terms of creating new content, and I'm sure Larian are paying dearly for that...but they do not fundamentally change the core gameplay.

I don't get what's so bad about the kickstarter apart from the backer exclusive shit. At least now you get an idea what to expect i.e. turn based Grimrock clone - that's a huge improvement over the unfocused mess of his previous campaign. Also the goal is much more realistic this time.

In all seriousness, I'm actually hoping this thing succeeds. I like dungeon crawlers, and everything I've seen that is concrete about this I quite enjoy. But weird design decisions are weird design decisions, even if the overall product looks nice.

I just realized making snap judgements based on this only makes me one degree away from Roguey, which is kind of chilling. But I still think "we're going to use game systems we already have in place to implement a bunch of content" (Larian) is miles away from "depending on how much money we make, we're going to completely redesign combat in a combat-focused game!".

Hoping for it to succeed is a bit too optimistic, should hope for it to at least get funded.

What can I say, I am an optimistic person when I have nothing at stake.

I was all optimistic about this project but seriously... WTF with that $500 exclusive class? I want some of the stuff Guido has been smoking lately.

I think it could still be a good game, but honestly this looks a bit scatterbrained to me. Even the pitch-video editing is disjointed and awkward. Oh well, I've put in a tentative $20 pledge and I'll see what transpires over the campaign.

Didn't know he made all those games by himself. Besides wasn't he just a producer?

He was the producer of Planescape Torment and he had some involvement in Fallout 2. As for the Realms of Arkania games, here it is in his own words:

"Blade of Destiny was developed by a very small team. Attic was still pretty much a start-up company at that time. As a result everyone had to multi-task as much as possible, and we tapped into everyone’s full abilities. In my case that meant that I was working on the game as a designer, a programmer, and a producer, and later on also as the publicist and business developer when we began to reach out, looking for partners to release the game internationally. I was wearing every hat imaginable on that project — as well as all the other Realms of Arkania games."

Setting aside for a moment whether or not I think Henkel is a smart businessman ...

I'm still having a hard time getting past the art design. "More blades! Extra spikes!! And airbrushed elves with fruity names!" There's just something ... dismally embarrassing about the whole aesthetic. Even if the gameplay is good, I'd probably be ashamed to be seen playing something like this. Still, I'll watch for reviews if this ever gets off the ground.

Regardless of the nitpicky details, the video's emphasis on character development and level design just goes to show you that Henkel understands how to coax out the full potential of the RPG genre. As one of the pioneers, that is no surprise.

(even if time has left him behind)

Since we feel very strongly that every Kickstarter backer should actually get something special and exclusive

We feel that this is a great way to allow everyone to experience the Nethermancer at least two or three times over the course of the game. Playing as this character through the entire game will require an investment into the Nethermancer Edition or higher, however, as it is a unique and fun feature that we have specifically selected for backers who spend high amounts of money on the “Deathfire” project.

:hmmm:

I don't get all the comlaining.
Most of the game's features sound good to great.
I pledged, though I doubt the campaign will succeed. Guido's not Obsidian, so no rabid fan-base that works as multipliers while ignoring everything that might be wrong with the project.

Next time, Guido, I suggest you let Josh Sawyer or MCA play the front man for you. Seems you pull no weight with the "hardcore" RPG crowd.

Heh, sorry, but I am positive this game will not get funded.
