Dualshock 4 I was using for less than 2 years now won't stay connected (gains/loses connection repeatedly every second unless left on perfectly flat surface, no it's not the cable), and fuck if I'm going to give money to modern Soyny for a replacement. Any suggestions?

if you use windows just get an xbox one controller for pc (specifically labelled like that I think?) it just works, and one nice thing about it is that the cable is just a normal usb-c to usb iirc, at any rate it's easy to replace the cable if it gets fucked than the entire controller.

also lol snoy

XBOX controllers are the simplest solution. Personally, I don't like the XBOX thumbsticks and use a Dualshock 4 + DS4Windows.

Don't Xbox controllers have shitty D-pads?
Some people dislike them because they're a single circular button with a d-pad raised above them "suggesting" the directional input. This leads some people with certain shaped hands to press d-pad up when they meant to press d-pad left, etc. Personally I've never had an issue with my XBone controller and consider it the single most comfortable controller I've ever used (especially for longer play sessions), but ymmv.

I have a Horipad for Switch that works well with PC. Only problem is that the triggers aren't analog, worse for racing sims but I don't play them.

The newer xbox controllers are ok but the dpad is just bad. Dualshock is pretty good but triggers have a short throw. Some of the logitec controllers are ok but they seem to be kind of low quality and the buttons start wearing out relatively quickly.

Maybe the solution is different controllers for different types of games but who wants to spend all that money on a bunch of controllers?

My dream controller is a dualshock 2 that somehow has dreamcast triggers. But I haven't seen one like that in real life...

If you just play games like Soulsborne, metroidvanias, action adventure shit etc. Xbox controller is your best bet, for convenience. It's supported natively by Windows, uses AA batteries which is much better than built-in batteries that eventually die, and is sturdy enough to last. The D-pad is just ok, though. Much better on the Series controller than previous generation.

I tried playing one of the new Pacman games with the Xbox 360 controller and it was terrible. Never had issues with the d-pad otherwise.

Just like pretty much everyone else in this thread i have a 360 wired gaypad for pc. But i use it like once in a year or two, maybe less. I barely even play games that need a cuntroller.

Been using my trusty xbox 360 controller for +15 years
The only correct answer.

I'm not a big fan of the Xbox controller's design but that thing is well made and indestructible. I got mine 10 years ago and it's working as well as on the first day.

I have an Xbone controller, but the pressure-sensitive upper-right trigger/shoulder button, which is purportedly specially designed for firing guns in console shooters, "sticks" in a way I find unnatural and annoying; it seems to require a certain amount of pressure to register as a simple press; otherwise, it doesn't register. From what I've read, it's designed that way on purpose, as you can see if you query a search engine for "xbox controller right trigger sticks."

As such, I've lately been using whatever DualShock came with the PS4 Pro I bought some years back, and it works just fine while still having pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons.

XBOX 360 controller. I've always been a PlayStation guy, but the XBOX controller is the best one ever made. I've never had a controller that felt amazing and just natural.

I've been using Razer controllers for years and love them. My favorite feature is probably the extra buttons on the bottom. I always map them to replace pressing in the analog sticks.

Hate the way XboxOne shoulder buttons feel (nasty and cheap), and the general ergonomics of the thing. Nothing I've used beats the good ol' DS4 controllers except maybe the Xbox 360 controllers with the redesigned D-pad (the original is horrible). I've never tried any of those $200+ things like the deluxe steam controllers or the razer. Seems a bit excessive to pay that much for a controller.

Get the newest xbox controller or a ps5 gamepad depending on where you like your analog stick. I use a ds5 with ds4windows and it works fine for me.

This, but not only for Windows.
I use Linux only and the Xbox One controller works just fine.

The Switch Pro one also works flawlessly. Both are very much recommended.

The mouse and the keyboard.
Sometimes you just need analog controls though. Some games just suck with a mouse too. I tried to play Star Wars Squadrons for the first time the other day and I made it about 10 minutes before I said "fuck this" and bought a HOTAS
