And now, in a Biowarian twist, Codex must work together to stop the donations from reaching 2 million at all costs.

WTF?! The incline didn't last long... :M
We should consider pulling our 10K out of the kickstarter if that will bring it under 2M.

Dark souls has optional content where players can help/annoy others in their own single player playthroughs. As long as it's like that and not full-time-social-experience-apocalyptic-farmville, I don't think it's reason for concern.

All those blasters and ninjas and spaceships that plagued Ultima, Wizardry or M&M had always made me cringe. There is a reason I value Goldbox series above all of them combined, and that goes beyond them having a good combat engine: they had a developed, coherent, solid setting and were 100% serious about it. So I guess Knotanalt bro can accuse me of being a storyfag too ;) No ninjas and blasters in my fantasy, please.

I agree 100%. I also have to say that I think this is actually kind of big deal for me.

On the other hand, I have nothing but contempt to this whole "post-apocalyptic" crap. The basic Fallout setting is gutwrenchingly bland and boring, with nothing to stand out from the great gray mire of grimdark shit (and yes, it did pioneer that "shades-of-brown-grimdark" you all complain about nowadays). The lulz liberally thrown about is the only entertainment their setting can offer, as far as I am concerned. So, when it comes to "the spirit of the Wasteland", its Monty Python references are its only saving grace. It was those easter eggs I searched the "wastes" for, not another shitbrick village populated by shit hobos who sustain themselves on harvesting shit in the shit fields. Going fulltime parody would only improve it.

Solid point, I never thought of it that way. I do agree that the Wasteland would have been a pretty limited setting if they had played it completely straight.

At 2 million we will increase the staff to make the game more social so that it can become a more shared experience. We like the concepts of dropping notes into the world for your friends who are playing the game, or perhaps we may allow you to send an item their way from Ranger center to help them out. We are fleshing out the ideas but intend to increase the social aspects of the game without diverting it from being an old school RPG and without hurting the balance.
Horrible idea. Don't waste any fucking time or money on any sort of netcode. 100% focus on singleplayer experience.
Such a derp move.

Ghoul Harold is also just some dude. That's kind of his gimmick, being a common guy that just happens to run into the series' heroes. Run Harold, run!

Sadly, Harold was born in a specific date (2072) so they'd have to take that into consideration or just make a non-canon cameo

A specific date? He was born in a specific universe. Not the Wasteland one.

Yeah that's a huge red flag right there.
It sounded way to nice from the beginning to be true.
I'm not donating anything and will wait until it's done.

Bloody hell guys....a starved man won't say no to a portion of porridge just because there is a fly innit?

TURN BASED RPG!

Hell, if W2 will provide a setting and world with rich encounters and NO level scaling, then there might be room to accommodate bragging rights!

I LOL'd. Everything as predicted.

There is a reason proper niche RPGs are made under a 100k budget. Throw a few quids more, and they all start aspiring to become the next worldwide sensation worshipped by faggots and retards all over the planet.

Drop me a note when it hits a 5mil mark and becomes a MMO or a Call of Duty ripoff, so I may get another laugh. The Codex, a spurned girlfriend still hopelessly in love, never changes.

You fucking rejects love jumping to conclusions more than you love donning Skyway masks. Admit it. The guy who aspired to be Rosh and failed now owns half of you. You fucking losers.

Skyway is a better Codexian than half of you.

A more sensible Codexian, anyway.

Chris almighty that sounds...Dark Soulsish?

Well, that's fine for Dark Souls and all, but Wasteland? I'm just worried that this will take up a lot of their time and money implementing this feature.

Well, I'm not taking back my pledge, but I'm very disappointed that this is going to be their 2 million dollar idea.

I got that e-mail and cringed at the idea of social features. I was hoping 2 mil mark was going to be a focus on robust modding tools.

Still, it's funny to me how fellow codexians are so quick to flip the table and walk out on their bill. "WHAT. NOPE. NOT DONATING. CANCELLED PREORDER. DELETED WINDOWS. CALLED THE COPS. BURNED THE HOUSE DOWN"

Drama queens, the lot of you. Instead of spraying shit at the wall like a feral cat, why don't you head on over to http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/index.php and tell them you don't want this garbage waste of resources.

I can live without ambience and atmosphere. But all too many people on WL2 forums demand shit like romances and 2d sprites having characters (thus they must not die) - while not caring about what's truly important for RPG - character systems and combat since that's 80%+ of any RPG.

Do you see discussion about character systems?
Do you see a lot of discussion about marriages, gay characters and romances?

So ugh - maybe I'm actually wrong and it will end up exactly like what people want. Turn based Mass Effect.
The simple answer is that NXile should simply disregard bad ideas, and all shall work out well in the end.

Disregarding the silliness of the whole paying-upfront system, you have to admit that very clear omens in terms of developers being capable or incapable of delivering a certain type of game do exist, and this appeared to be one of them. Some ideas don't just come from nothing, they are manifestations of underlying issues stemming from an incompatible mindset so to speak, and if they turn up out of the blue, one has to wonder about the merits of the entire thing.

From here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts/195161

"Everyone remain calm...

There has been a lot of panic that any kind of element of sharing will ruin the classic old school RPG. I think some people are overreacting to the word "social" which I can kind of understand. But here is the bottom line. We will post a description of our thoughts in the forums and if YOU the fans still don't want it then we will not fight the majority. We can now get back to our normal shouting" - Brian Fargo

This is the problem I have with the comical level of pessimism that pervades the codex. Fargo is a bro. Everything he's been saying up till the social element fiasco has been music to our collective ears. If not, W2 certainly wouldn't have amassed 1.5 million dollars in less than 2 weeks. So he says a bunch of things right, then one thing wrong and suddenly it's ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD and we're capsizing the whole project.

Dude's a bro. Takes a fine sense of humility to say "ok if you guys don't want it we won't force it on you" as opposed to a "you don't know what you want" mentality. Besides, this guy clearly loves games and probably thought that the demon's souls' "player hints" idea would be cool in Wasteland 2. I think it is cool in Demon's Souls, but it's not something i want in every game, and that's definitely not a feature of the old school cRPGs I paid for revival of, so I don't want time and money wasted on adding netcode to a game meant to be enjoyed as single player experience. I'd rather learn that I can use RANDOMSKILL to pass an obstacle on my own, through trial and error, and not through a "use repair on the rudder" note on the ground from some dickweed in Illinois who read the answer on gamefaqs.

Taken from the latest project update on the kickstarter..

That sounds awfully familiar, and wouldn't necessarily be such a bad idea if done well.. :smug:
