But you played them, right? Some of the stuff in wizardry and ultima was too much for me, too, but it was nothing more than a momentary cringe.

At times I was ready to throw up the towel and cry in exasperation, really. Why the fuck were those fags breaking my immersion with their shit inside jokes, retarded puzzles and cross-culture references? I actually snubbed Dark Sun for a couple of years because I didn't want an RPG set in a sandnigger shithole. And Fallout was my first non-fantasy RPG - scifi was an anathema and I refused scifi RPGs outright (didn't knew of Buck Rogers back then, and the fact the rest of scifi RPGs were pretty crappy didn't help either). I was an easily impressable kid 20 years ago.

And I still get pissed off when a game expects me to believe a Big Evil Motherfucker I am out to nail has to solve some fucking crossword or switch a bunch of levers whenever he comes back home after a night of villainy. Puzzles are worse than blaster-swinging ninjas riding a spaceship.

One problem with the silliness in Fallout 2 was that if they called it a different game, maybe Big Trouble in Little California, it would have been acceptable. That way, all connections to Fallout would have been removed, and the silliness would stand on its own merit.

Instead,it became a sequel to a game which was largely serious save for a Doctor Who and a Godzilla reference.

Edginess levels...overwhelming.

Yo, mondblut, what is it about fantasy RPGs that you like so much? It's an interest contrast to some people here who reject games out of hand just because they have too generic a fantasy setting.

Dunno, fantasy was a love at first sight since I opened LOTR at 14, and remains that way. I might have developed a better taste for grimdark, black-and-grey-morality, everything-you-believe-is-a-lie stuff like Sapkowski, Martin and Cook, but I am nonetheless 100% entrenched in swords & sorcery.

Next-gen mondblut.

Next-gen? That's a 16-bit mondblut, FFS.

This is just genetic drift. No RPG sessions used to be LARP fests, that is a new thing. The decline, which slowly worked its way in as drama school rejects jumped on the band wagon and put on wizard hats.

Which is exactly how it is with crpgs. Now these guys turn around and tell me that that's what an RPG is all about. Yeah right..
This is... well... bullshit. Star Wars D6 was made that way. Story first, everything else second. And Michael Stackpole co-created that system, as well as Wasteland ironically. Also, we're not discussing about LARPing. That's something totally different. You can play story-driven RPG sessions without LARPing. As I did.

And no-one is saying that's what RPG is all about. What I'm saying is that's one of many and completely valid way to play RPGs.

People in this community can be really retarded sometimes.

Anyway, I'm hoping for a good and expansive toolkit so the community can continually improve the game and create new adventures (and nude sprites, of course).

Knotanalt, your description of the Codex's character is way off base. It may have been more true in the past, though.

Lol, no outrage here. Just pointing out you're making some seriously invalid statements like "focusing on story is a recent disease killing my trve norwegian black metal RPGs". It's neither new or wrong in any sense. You can have your preferences on RPGs, just don't state them as the only truth and don't back them up with made up facts.

What likaq said is irrelevant here.
a cognitive challenge of some kind is right in the definition of the word game just scroll through the forums a bit to the last time this came up to see how stupid you're going to look if you try to continue in this vein.
This challenge can differ in form. It can be story-wise as well, a social problem to play out through your role, your character. Actually that's much closer to what "ROLE-PLAYING game" term states as it is.

I Blame Brother None for how bad the wording in the poll is. The '6 party members created' option should be at the very top and clearly legible. The bottom is ok. The way the poll is setup, it sort of favors the old Wasteland 1 party recruitment, which is ok I guess but it clearly shows where the bias in this poll is.

No matter how many times gabriel77dan gets shot down, he never. backs. down. I recall him making that "main character does everything awesome and the others are combat mules" suggestion a few times already.

What I'd prefer is being able to be able to create your "main" character and choose from 10 pre-made characters that are like companions in Fallout, Baldurs Gate and Planescape, who interact with each other, NPC's and the gameworld itself.

Christ, this is pathetic. Why is there such an aversion for these people to create a party from scratch?

1) it's hard work and unimmersive
2) They can only roleplay one person at the time and that person is them, for example who would you give the romances to in this case, if you make them all cool like you are irl you can't decide arragh
3) A custom party means each member has no story of their own, and rpgs are about story

I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the threads calling for a less "niche" game (in particular, the one named "Don't niche yourself out of business") may have been created by mainstream AAA game developers.

I can imagine some dude at Bioware who wants this game to be edged a bit towards the mainstream, so that it sells more copies. Then maybe his corporate overlords will allow him to create a similar game.

Absolutely. I remember the old porn sites (or warez) that had a disclaimer "if you are from the FBI, you cannot access this website" keeping the community clean of turncoats. The popamole game developers and publishers have a lot of monetary incentives to come and ruin the party for Wasteland 2 and they've shown in the past time and again they are immature and crass enough to use their anonymity in order to promote their products.

Yes, but what I'm saying is that even if they mean well - because they want Wasteland 2 to serve as an example to their bosses so that they can make their own games less dumb - they can still do damage.

I think the corporate overlords like to pretend they can make a difference and make tough, courageous decisions. The best thing that could happen for hardcore RPGs is for a really really hardcore RPG to be successful. Then the corporate overlord would get the bright idea that if he made it more mainstream, the flood gates would open, it would be a smash hit and he would be invited in the pussy forest and get to slurp all of that shit up.

It's a better dream than seeing exactly how many copies a mainstream Wasteland 2 game sells and then the executive using a calculator and figures out the investment for a ripoff would not be worth it.

I think the cyberpunk guy just wants overpowered limb mods to wear under his equipment without caring about in-setting justification or coherence.

Also, playing psychoanalyst to characters created by the player would require them to look inside and face their own neurosis and insecurities, and that never ends well

edit: whoa nelly

Oh no... I really don't like the sound of this. Wasteland: The Facebook Game? I know I'm overstating that but still....

Brian Fargo:
At 2 million we will increase the staff to make the game more social so that it can become a more shared experience. We like the concepts of dropping notes into the world for your friends who are playing the game, or perhaps we may allow you to send an item their way from Ranger center to help them out. We are fleshing out the ideas but intend to increase the social aspects of the game without diverting it from being an old school RPG and without hurting the balance.
