Through the Aftermath's 50th episode podcast talks with Brian Fargo and Wasteland 2 writer Nathan Long. It's a really information-dense interview and well worth the listen, but also has some spoilers. They talk inspirations, writing... popamole...

I'm listening right now.

There is a unique combat bark for every combination of characters and weapons. :salute:

Honestly, I can't talk exact money considerations, but I think it'd knock people off their feet how much of a money swing this distribution license represents, all of which is going right back into the game. It's nice!
So you're saying inXile would be fucked if they didn't have Deep Silver doing the heavy lifting here. :M

So, uh, why wasn't all this butthurt made evident when Fargo announced Steam as one of the digital distribution partners?

Gaben taking his 30% cut off Wasteland 2 is ok but somehow Deep Silver getting theirs for physical distribution is unacceptable? Isn't it going to be available through Origin as well, for fuck's sake?

To be fair, there was a little outcry surrounding Origin. But not a ton, especially once it was clear Origin is not going to be any kind of exclusive or getting anything extra, and neither is Deep Silver, everyone gets exactly the same game, and for their services the different distributors get a cut. Not exactly earth-shattering, no.

Awesome first specific info about content of the game in the interview. Loads of it - and its all great.
The opening of the game seems just perfect.
Love the idea of that cult too. Everything else too.

"inXile is no longer a Indie Developer, wahhh"

As if they ever were . . .

Aren't we? How do you define indie? We're not part of any publisher nor is our development budget funded by a publisher. Isn't that independent? Or do you mean indie more in the "tiny indie company" sense?

Tiny indie company. Once you can maintain a decent team and receive contracts from publishers, I'd wager many would no longer consider you an "Indie." I suppose Bard's Tale and Demon Forge probably break my ad-hoc definition.

Why Deep Siliver would cause people to claim you're no longer indie, though? Idiocy. It's just a distributor, like Steam, Origin, Desura .etc.

What's the rage about this deal?

"inXile is no longer a Indie Developer, wahhh"

As if they ever were . . .

If i had to categorized inXile as anything it would probably be as casual iphone/console developer, out of the 9 games they have released, 4 were on the iphone/ipod, the rest were console releases with pc ports. But hey, if they manage to do a proper job with Torment and WL2, then they can move up into the righteous category of indie crpg developer. :obviously:

I know there are some people who define "indie" as "a developer who doesn't have access to traditional retail distribution networks". So if your game can be bought at Best Buy, you're not an indie. It's probably a bit of an old-fashioned definition, but it still makes some sense.

interesting... you have the first real info about game content...

and all you talk about is what and who is "indie".

and what is a ...definition... of indie.

I wanted to give you all an update on the progress of Wasteland 2 and to answer some of the questions I have received on production. I can happily announce that we remain well financed for development, thus allowing us to ship a product without compromise. This is primarily due to our disciplined spending, project planning and the benefit of our back catalog sales to cover any extra product features and content we loved.

Gee I wonder what inspired this update. Good to hear though.

I love the art for the centron deluxe model.
I'm hoping for another gameplay/combat teaser video when they've finalized all the systems.
But most of all, I'm hoping for a Torment update. With Numenera launching it would be really cool to get some lore tidbits and stuff like that.
