VNs aren't really my thing, but figured I'd let you guys know Higurashi no Naku Koro ni got Greenlit in the latest batch, so it'll pop up on Steam at some point in the near future. From the Greenlight page, the art looks goddamn awful though.

Some people apparently find it "charming". Other use a fan-patch to replace the art from the PS2 version of the game.

If the game is successful but has shitty art, usually that means that writing (or something else) is excellent. Dunno 'bout Higurashi, I watched the animes and that was enough.

There's quite a few radically different endings for steins;gate. I don't know which one the anime follows.

Okay, I finished Grisaia no Kajitsu's Yumiko route. It solidified me in a my previous conclusion, when faced with an:
- entertaining VN
- entertaining book
Then the book is sure to provide me with more enjoyment. Unless a VN has something more going for it (say for example YU-NO) than some very obvious choices as to which route to enter, then I'm not really interested.

While I do not hate it entirely I am of a similar opinion. 999 is a more condensed experience.

Yeah, pretty much. Although Ever17, I feel, is more subtle and elegant in its construction, it's not immediately obvious that weird shit is going on, and it does a good job of misleading the player in various small-but-significant ways. It's really a pity that you need so slog through so much mundane shit to reach the payoff.

Makes me wish someone did a proper adventure game by drawing inspiration from these VNs and The Last Express, where events would proceed in real-time regardless of what the player is doing, certain outcomes would be exclusive so you'd need multiple playthroughs to get the full picture, and it would all build up to a reveal encompassing all of them as legitimate parts of the narrative.

Sometimes I prefer gameplay other than OPTION A or OPTION B.
Decisions are nice, but it doesn't seem that engaging to me if most VNs just unfold in a traditional manner.
I'm not sure if it will mesh well since it's supposed to be like a digital copy of a CYOA book-genre but I'd really love to see something new than the feeling of 'reading another book'

Have you played The Last Express, bro? I think that game's mechanics would really suit a relatively short, replayable narrative with multiple divergent paths.

Man that was something.
It was intriguing to watch, but not sure if it's great to play.

I actually can't fathom getting any enjoyment out of reading/watching an LP of The Last Express, the enjoyment comes pretty much exclusively from navigating the real-time space and unravelling the plot yourself.

There was some discussion on it in the anime thread I think. I am not sure but the resume seemed to range from "waste of time" to "pretty damn great". Some could not see its appeal, others liked it a great deal. /a/ really likes it but then, they also like Katawa Shoujo.

I think it's pretty good. I definitely wouldn't recommend reading it directly after having watched the anime, though, since the first route (you have to play them in order) is basically an introduction to the world, the characters and the Holy Grail War. It also focuses on the imo most boring character (Saber) and has the "worst" Shirou. The second and third route are much better, although your mileage may vary with the third one (it's pretty long, I think it's more than half of the whole game).

In my opinion its strength is the setting being pretty elaborate and somewhat non-standard. The writing (at least in the translation) is pretty average, and the porn is horribad. The characters, most of which you should know from the anime, are pretty much standard anime fare and only a few of them are somewhat elaborate. If you liked the anime I'd say you'll definitely like the VN, the only question is if you're willing to slog through the boring cooking scenes for the awesome bits. I'd say it's a bad VN to start with, though.
