Torchlight 2 is a MASSIVE incline

Convince me why I should get this game if I didn't like Torchlight 1 or any other Diablo-like except for Diablo 1 and to some extent Diablo 2.

To echo some past comments, I agree that they didn't learn anything from the TL1 feedback re: difficulty levels. Veteran is okay but rarely is any competent player at risk of dying. Elite suffers a bit too much from health bloat which -- combined with the higher damage output -- makes for a fairly tedious experience. There's basically no point in trying to be a 'Tank-gineer' or any kind of tank character. Anything lower than Elite and you don't need one and, on Elite, you'll just get curb stomped regardless of how many mitigation talents you have. Moreover, your damage will be so weak nothing will die.

Also, yes, the 'boss chests' are pointless. 90% of the time you just get a green and some gold.

Veteran is not that bad a difficulty setting.

Anyway this is much more fun than Diablo 3. I had more fun in its first 30 minutes than in the entirety of D3. It's refreshing to again see a game where you're only told extremely little and discover things for yourself.

I do wonder, does the strenght stat affects gun and bow damage, or is it dexterity?

Also does the game level scale when you enter some of the dungeons?

Strength affects damage of all weapons. Dex gives critical hit chance for all attacks, including spells.

I want to add that the itemization blows in this game. Even the unique weapons and unique set items look like they were created with a random item generator instead of hand crafted. Many of them seem to lack focus and the stats are just kind of all over the place willy-nilly. Even the set bonuses scream "randomly generated".

I play on Elite as a construction-cannon-engineer. Have no issues. Steady amount of damage hurts me, but I put out a lot of damage too. This game is easier on Elite than TL1 was on its hardest difficulty, IMO, because you have a lot more room to run around and heal in. Up your resistances instead of health and you'll be fine. I have an oh-shit button that knocks enemies away if they get too close, an oh-shit heal spell, and a heal/mana-bot that heals me. Only time I die is if I make a mistake.

Also, I think the itemization kicks ass and the guys who made this game understand the point of their genre: everybody gets random loot, so everybody has a reason to gloat if they get something good.

But it really is, i am playing as a shotgun outlander and normal attack is my bread and butter, its very awkward having to hold down shift and the left button.

In the first game you could bind attack to both.

I'm getting smashed right now on my Outlander on Veteran, but I probably need to dodge more and change my build up. Having to reroll in an arpg instead of changing all my talents with an awesum button? I did try out a cannon engineer and it rolls through everything, especially with a unique cannon.

Putting all my skill points in one skill to gain 2% damage boost each time feels so good ! And having only one skill + auto-attack to spam is so much fun ! Can't wait to play Torchlight III which will no doubt feature one spell book for all the classes.

Only if you don't have a left hand. Exactly how is it anymore awkward to hold down shift and hit left mouse than it is to hold down shift and hit right mouse?

Because with right click you can judge the distance easier and your left hand is free to use skills.

Can't you swap mouse buttons with a driver/3rd party program?

Just tried this spec for a bit and I have to say it's probably because it is the most overpowered I've run across so far amongst all the classes/builds. You do big damage and have multiple summons supporting you to boot.

Any idea if they improved it from the beta? I found there was generally too much loot in it, although still slightly less than in the first game.

And summons seem broken on elite if the shit spells I put on the pet are any indication.
Anyway gameplay in act 3 elite on my ranged outlander turned into GW2 pve. Drop circles on ground, spam flashy skills for a while, roll when in danger, proceed forward.

sea: less loot than in TL1 but still as shit. Transmuted over 20 "uniques" that were basically random blues with some added flavor text.

Gotta love the rock chunks blocking the way; don't forget you can re-roll the map online.

Werewolf fight on elite is just retarded, fucking infinite spawning minions mechanic. Not sure what kind of gear you're supposed to have but I doubt the items on vendor (that I'll meet the requirements in 5 levels) would help in this fight (that I already overlevel by 4).
And the fact that you don't see enemies as soon as they are on your screen is way beyond retarded, running around and sometimes they appear just outside melee range.

It really looks like a game for 5 year old kids, those graphics are really really horrible. The whining about Diablo 3 graphics and then this is accepted... :decline:

But this isn't Diablo you idiot. The graphic style may suck, but it's not like the past games were done in a gothic style and then suddenly changed into candy land.

Graphics whoring is not a good thing. If the graphics don't get in the way of the gameplay, who cares? Or if you mean the style then add style next to graphics.

His point still stands, sortof. How much of the qq about D3 was based on gameplay? D3's combat is leagues ahead of TL2 (and lightyears ahead of PoE) yet apparently that game didn't do anything right.

As for graphics/style quality, models and combat are a low poly cartoonish flashy mess but the locations in TL2 are quite impressive. Kinda wish they didn't go full cartoon network style on models so my friends get past the char creation screen.

One of Torchlight 1 biggest selling point was being able to run on netbooks. Torchlight 2 still runs on my netbook yet looking more impressive than 2004 games I cannot play. Do I need to say more?
