Wyrmlord said:Nah, not really. It's a bit more than that. Doom is a game in which your environment is a puzzle. You often see places through windows that you can't reach and it leaves you wondering how you can reach them. It often happened that a place would open up briefly if you stood at a particular point and you had to rush right then and there to get in, and you would find a secret area. These areas contained powerful items, and even had optional exits to OTHER levels.Mareus said:Doom was just about running around and shooting at everything that moves.
If you travelled through the sea of toxic chemicals, you often found some more useful places, under the consideration that you risk alot of damage to yourself. If there ever was a hazmat suit somewhere, it was best to grab it and go into those areas.
That was the appeal of the game: the hunt for resources to survive, and the exploration of those levels. The shooting was incidental to it.
From top of my head - Timeshift... Beat it and i don't recall any secret or hidden areas. I'd find more shooters without it but im to lazy to think now...Mareus said:And no, I have never yet played a shooter where you didn't have secret areas. Name me one shooter that didn't have secret areas and I will believe you.
Bioshock. Far Cry. Call Of Duty games. Every railroaded shooter ever made.Mareus said:And no, I have never yet played a shooter where you didn't have secret areas. Name me one shooter that didn't have secret areas and I will believe you.
Really? I thought Heretic was just a texture mod where they changed everything to a generic fantasy setting and made all the colors clash. Hexen, on the other hand, was excellent. From all the Doom time shooters however I found Heretic much better than doom. But I still would say it was just about running around and killing stuff.
Yes, Hexen was much better, but it also came a lot later. If we are gonna compare shooters which came out before 1996, then I will mention Cybermage that kicks ass from Hexen, Heretic and Doom and all other shooters that came out till 1995.Argosy said:Really? Japanese Ultima Underworld - Dan - 3:40:53 PM EST
This is one news post I didn't expect to ever be making. Today (well, yesterday actually, details...) I learned that there was a Japanese version of Underworld 1 released for the original playstation years ago. TheOutrider was kind enough to provide some screenshots and information in this thread
# the framerate and resolution are very nice
# the controls aren't
# there's an FMV intro, high-quality music and some nice sound effects, including echoing footsteps in large rooms
# the enemies have been replaced with rather ugly polygon renditions
Other than that, the game itself seems to be exactly the same. Except for the fact that everything's in Japanese.
