Gimmick in Ratchet trailer was nice but one could see framedrops even on this shitty stream. Cant even hold stable 30 fps. In a action twitch game where quick and smooth feedback is essential.

Even Gran Turismo had visible pop in, check the tunnel sequence in particular.

RE 8 demo also while looking the best of the bunch had fuckload of really visible frame drops.

Mighty SSD was a nice marketing bit but it seems it will still struggle on delivering stable 30. We can forget about 60 fps on this next gen console.

Xbox got a huge edge here compared to this fancy router.
Even Oddworld had framedrops.

Scroll some pictures for a nice illustration on how geometry density won't get you far.:smug:
I meant geometry used for viewport frustum culling, physics and AI navigation.

You can fetch high quality models as camera turns in their direction - thanks to "magic of SSD", but base level geometry needs to stay in RAM (preferably in cache) at all times, or you'll get arrows or bullets going through walls, AI actors falling through the stairs, or quest items getting embedded into furniture.

And concerning occlusion probe - it's nice lightning approximation, probably still too performance intensive for PS5 / XSX, and ultimately a dead end in graphics evolution. Consumer-level ray tracing hardware will inevitably come down in price, and we will get the real thing, not some crummy approximation.

I think this pretty much confirms the western branch of Sony is completely in control now. That design is atrocious western soy 101.
Which is good news for Nintendo since they won't have any competition in Japan for a long time.
Hell,we might even see a resurgence of crazy jap indies coming to switch.

Remember when people thought this was the worst looking console?
Nintendo-GameCube-System---Jet-Black

Never understood why.
As far as console designs go, the GameCube was super pratical to move around and install plus it took very little space.

General complaint was that it looked like a toy (gasp!), and the original purple color was unconventional. One of those designs that have aged well. I specially like the orange and pearl variations.

Yeah.

PS1 had 3 Final Fantasies.
PS2 had 3 also, but two were the same.
PS3 had 3 also, but three were the same.
PS4 had two, but one does not really exist, and the other is the PS1 one.

PS5 will have just 1/2. The second episode of the FFVII remake....

By the way, imagine to have to buy two different consoles to play a single complete game.

The Ratchet demo to me shows what the "power" of their fast SSD and higher RAM could do for games. A lot of it was a cinematic, but during the gameplay part you could see him quickly warp across the level and also quickly load a different part of the level through a very brief transition animation. I don't think any of that is super stunning to a PC gamer like moi, who could use weird ass jump scrolls to do some crazy shit in Morrowind for example. However I do think it'll be a new experience for consoles if it's that fast. If you watch Digital Foundry comparisons console versions of games like Outer Worlds literally take a minute or more to load new areas sometimes, while on PC it takes like 5 seconds. That's not an exaggeration. Developers counting on that speed will also impact game design across all platforms. For example games like Super Meat Boy know they can instantly load you back, so they don't mind killing you constantly. Think of that kind of thing applied to a "AAA" FPS.

I remember it generally being liked at the time of release. That's where design sensibilities were in 2001, think the original iPod and that one Mac released at the end of the '90s.

The Cube looked better than PS2 or the Box. Anyone who worries how mature a game system makes them look is a loser and a poopy head .

Still, when I unboxed non-slim PS3 with its glossy appearance it felt awesome. It was such a beautiful blu-ray player!

PS3 was a nice Blu-Ray player, and like half a grand less than just buying a Blu-Ray player for a few years.
Too bad later in its life my phat began ramping up the fan at maximum speed while watching movies.
Also, I think it was by design that if it had bluray movie in it, it would just play it without ever going to PS3 interface. Later they removed that option to launch movies(and games) at start-up if disk was present.

You're gonna like this: I know a guy who is a complete PS muppet-fanboy, and he told me he is starting to think that Sony are holding back their biggest trump cards for November, and everything they showed the other day was in order to persuade Microsoft that nothing is threathening the new Xbox.

Think Xbox showcase in July will be mostly Halo, Hellblade 2, new Forza Motorsport and some Flight Simulator. All those available at console launch date. Also raytraced Minecraft ofcourse.

Forza Horizon team is rumored to be working on new Fable so maybe a glimpse of that.
New Killer Instinct would be nice but doubt it.
And probably some crap with inclusive gameplay from Double Fine/Obsidian/inXile.

Focus on fidelity and performance, 4k60fps for the whole lot except maybe Hellblade 2.

So basically PS5 specs will be mid-tier PC specs by the time it is actually released?

Depends on what you mean by mid-tier. Arguably it's mid-tier now except for the SSD, if you consider the $400-500 GPUs mid-tier.
