You are playing on hard, I take it? I was around level 85 in the final dungeon.

While the battle starts with a cheesy surprise attack, you can always intercept their turns with an S-craft. Kloe can heal your party that way if you are going to die before getting a chance to get a real turn. Also, a convenient way to get rid of bosses' minions quickly is to spam Joshua's Black Fang or Phantom Raid. You can just have other characters feed him Zeram Powder to keep his CP up and when all the annoying minions are dead, you can start fighting "normally". Zeram Powder is somewhat rare, of course, but it can be used on those few tricky fights.

Ahh, I did not realize that you could use S-crafts in that way. That is something to try. As far as consumables go, I have whatever I've managed to pick up through the game. I think I have some of that zeram stuff, so I can work that into another attempt somehow. I'm generally tl:dr when it comes to consumables aside from healing/magic. Thanks for the tips.

Does it matter which party members you choose to take on splits? Like how in chapter 1 you can choose to take Agate or Scherazard, and I'm getting the feeling that some of the dialogue might be a bit meatier if I took Agate. Are there "preferred" choices, so to speak?

Also, does anyone know if the bonus sepith effect stacks with the number of enemies you hit?

You mean in SC? If so, whoever you choose will be sticking with you for a good chunk of the game. I took Schera and it was worth it just for her banter with Oliver. I also happen to find Agate pretty bland.

Ah, I didn't know this. Schera seems to have a lot of throwaway filler dialogue in Ruan ("oh, hello [insert name], I have heard of you before, aren't you nice?)" so I considered taking Agate instead, under the assumption that it would only last the chapter.

Playing Trials in the Sky atm and enjoying it quite a lot.
I don't know what exactly it is but something about the few JRPGs I played like Secret of Mana and this here really lulls me in.
I don't mean the protagonists, I barely tolerate them (weaboo crap), it's more the gameplay and how gamey and versatile it is. Also the simple yet addictive way leveling works. You always have something to look forward to, there is never a complete balancing fail like in late game Morrowind.
I dunno, maybe there is something WRPGs still can learn from their Far Eastern cousins, mixing up gameplay since a hundred hours is a loooong time and in WRPGs I nearly always quit somewhere along the way.

Completely agree. Generally JRPGs always nailed the "oh man I can't wait to get my next level in order to get X" feeling. At least the good ones.

Quite the dedication to showing that particular anime trope is evil. Keep up the good fight.

It's not even the theme itself that particularly bothers me. What bothers me is that they're the same scenes, over and over and over again. I played through all this last night and by the end of it I was straight up skipping dialogue, which is something I never do. If it was just the Agate stuff I would have been fine with it, but it just endlessly harps on about it. It occurs every fucking time a character is reintroduced. The phrase "XXXX told me about Joshua..." has been used at least three times, not to mention all the melodramatic scenes where they nudge you in the ribs and say "hey, do you guys remember THIS?! Joshua was here before, and now he's not! ISN'T THIS HEARTBREAKING?!" .

Drove me up the fucking wall.

Another (gameplay) thing that pissed me off was Dorothee getting one-shot by mini-bosses and giving me game-overs. Fuck that noise. Nothing you can do about it except pray.

Also, does anyone know of a good combat role for Estelle? Raw physical attacks seem pretty shitty in this game, but she has such a limited EP pool and ATS growth. I've mostly been using her as a healer, and that's been fine, but I have no idea what to do with her on turns where it's not necessary. Her AoE crafts tend to do a piddly amount of damage, and since I'm casting 24/7 her strength buff isn't all that useful either. I feel like I'm missing something. I got some mileage with an accessory that makes her attacks water based, but most bosses have elemental resists, so it seems like a bit of a crapshoot.

I used Estelle mainly as a buffer and secondary healer. Her physical attacks are mostly bad but her final S-break is really good.

Trails in the Sky The Third is being localized for PC (but not PSP)

http://nichegamer.com/2016/03/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-in-the-sky-the-3rd-comes-west-on-pc/
XSEED Games have announced a western release for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd.

The game will release on PC sometime next year.

To celebrate the announcement, XSEED has discounted both The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and its sequel The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC, which have been cut down to $9.99 and $20.99, respectively.

XSEED also confirmed that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II will be out sometime this fall on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

And some comments by Xseed's tom relating to this release.

Our official announcement is going out right now.

To address some common questions thus far:
  • PC version only. Sorry, but we couldn't swing the PSP, PS3, or Vita versions of the game (and all for completely different reasons, to boot -- none of which I'm really at liberty to talk about in any great detail, so you'll just have to trust that we tried our best!).
  • Localization duties are not being handled by Carpe Fulgur as with SC, but by more or less the same team responsible for the Trails of Cold Steel games. So if you liked the way Cold Steel turned out, you've got nothing at all to worry about with 3rd!
  • Nothing is being edited out or removed. In fact, as others have said, I believe Sara will even be attempting to add the previously PSP-exclusive elements to the PC release -- though of course, nothing can be guaranteed there, especially at this early stage. It's just sort of an idea/goal at this point.
So, yeah... to all y'all who said there was no way in hell 3rd would ever see the light of localization, all I can say is, EAT IT.

Fucking awesome, can't get enough of XSEED or Trails.

I'm even playing the non-XSEED trails games on the PSP. So far they seem to suck a little.

They are great games, everything a jrpg should be; fun combat, quirky characters, interesting setting... Its awesome they are selling well so we can continue to ser more of these titles on PC especially on GOG

Anything I should be aware of, like time locked content?
Well, there's built in side-quests in the form of a job board, and then there's the usual collect-all-of-this-item-to-get-OP-weapons, but other than that it's pretty straightforward.

Some of the side-quests* expire after a certain while of story progression, but the game itself tells you how long you have.

*Some of them are hidden.

I'm playing the first of the trilogy right now (I hate how they are called First Chapter, Second Chapter etc - there are chapters within each game too) and I've missed a couple of jobs because I did too much of the main story. They do make it a bit obvious, like, "You should finish all your other work first!" but the job I missed was one related to a tower. It didn't come up on the board, so I didn't even know it existed until I saw it mentioned in a walkthrough.

There's something like 4 or 5 of these towers in the game and I wanted to do all of the quests for them, but it is no biggie really. It annoys the completionist side of me, and I probably won't get enough BP now to become top bracer, but I'm still really enjoying the game.

That's why I use guides to not miss all the hidden quests or the books needed to get an ultimate weapon(these books are next to impossible to find otherwise).

I used to do that for secrets in SRPGs and stuff, but it really ruins the experience, honestly. It's the kind of thing you would do on a second playthrough, unless you're hell-bent on only playing it once.

Considering how long JRPGs are, finishing the game once is already a luxury. A second run? Maybe with Evo. Actually that makes a lot of sense since I would hopefully remember enough of the translation to get by in moon.
True, the only time I'd ever consider replaying a JRPG is if like 3 or so years have past and the game was immensely good. That said, looking at a guide just for extra shit just seems...eh to me. I wouldn't recommend it, makes things feel cheaper. Like checking off things on a list.
