No secondary professions, 10 skill bar, mandatory skill slots including a healing skill, no dedicated healer class, gimped build diversity, potion based energy management.

It's getting worse the day. Guess there's a reason the other two founders of a.net jumped ship.

From the first link:

But I’m not the healing type, so I stuck with my dual-dagger fire setup which gave me powerful AoE skills. I had a ton of fun swapping between my attunements to fill different roles: I’d jump to my water attunement to freeze a lesser demon harassing our healers, then throw down a firewall in front of our Rangers so that their arrows caught fire en route to the boss (player abilities can combine together in hundreds of different, logical ways to produce new, unique effects)

Okay, THAT got my attention.

can't be that far off considering the new wave of promos, the previews and the fact that they finalized the hom rewards.

That's actually shown in one of the gameplay videoes that's found in this thread, either in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE5ZE4SebTk or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STsjcWT4XSA

It's an interesting idea, but I can already see how one would see this as "controlled chaos" sort of gameplay. Still, sounds interesting. Would be nice to know the release date.

Controlled chaos doesn't sound too bad. The whole group paradigm in MMOs needs to be upended IMO. No matter what sort of superficial differences there are, or how the names of the classes change, it still boils down to the holy trinity of tank, healer, and DPS. It's become so formulaic that it's boring. Anything that can mix it up a bit while keeping it engaging is alright by me, even if it seems a little gimmicky.

I like the concept of it, and now that they've explained how exactly they mean to go about it (as in, healers and tanks still exist, but you can become a tank or a healer on the spot) it sounds like it would work - having no taunts or the likes would be uncontrolled chaos.

There's been various rumors regarding the time it'll come out, some say it's Q1, some say it's Q3, some even claim it'll be pushed back all the way to 2012. Unfortunately there's no substance to these, but I'd think Q1 is the reasonable guess. At least I'd like to hope so.

We haven't heard from Annie since PAX. I wonder if there some kind of gag order in place right now. I know she's also doing Doublebear work, but it'd be nice if there was anything else she could add that we haven't heard already. I never played Guild Wars, but the more I hear about 2, the more interested I become.

Same here, and I was really hoping Annie could at least drop a hint as to when we could expect it.

One thing that kind of has me thinking it might be pushed back somewhat bad is that they still didn't reveal all classes and that for it to launch in Q1, they'd have to start open beta around now - unless they have a very large close beta group going.

they probably use the same testing model they used in gw1: closed group with regular callbacks, opportunity to earn invites and besides that the occasional open stress test event on a weekend.

That is very unfortunate. One of my favorite things about GW1 was being restricted to 8 skills and having to think up a good build based on what I was doing.

However there are a lot of traits and trait customization depth is unknown.

i actually like the idea of three slots determined by main hand, two by off-hand. it makes equipment swapping important and way less ridiculous than swappin in gw1 to reduce your max ene or some other silly shit like that.

Still, a complete overhaul of my favorite part (or only part I liked) makes me worried. It could turn out well but who knows?

So, with this waiting for GW2 to drop, I just discovered that there's a free trial for GW1. Should I check it out? Help me Obi-Codex. You're my only hope.

Game's pretty much dead now, though, so you can forget about the social part of it.

I completely disagree. Population's fine, especially for this type of mmo.

is it a prophecies trial or does it include nightfall?
'coz prophecies sucks donkey balls and could use a cataclysm style makeover.
if you actually contemplate getting gw2 you might wanna grab nightfall and eotn so you get the special hall of monuments loot in gw2, which will not require those shitty micro transaction transmutation stones.

no. you can forget about the social part due to heroes, the population is just fine and as annoying and general chat spamming as ever.

give it a go... it's a fun pve game and the pvp part is ok if you don't mind looking up skillchanges from time to time

haven't played for a while but population was good two months ago... you won't need ppl for most of the missions anyway... if you should need some backup, send me a pm

Funny thing is, Euro GW is basically dead, unless you have an active guild. But US GW is very much alive, many people playing.
Also, ANet said that soon we'll be able to have parties full of heroes (AI players with customizable skills and equipment) so it'll definitely be better for solo players.
And what trial? Prophecies is pretty slow, I'd say it's bad if you want to try out the game. Factions would be probably the best because you'll get to level 20 in no time. Nightfall is... ok but has a bit of grind in it.
So yeah, try it out. Even with all its faults, bad decisions by ANet and so on you could probably appreciate the amount of customization thanks to good design. Oh the time I've spent in outposts thinking of my next gimmicky build I'd use.

Sorry about lack of updates - I don't tend to check the Codex at work, because, well, you know. There's the tendency for people to post terrible things here, like horrible spiked dongs and pictures of naked asaris, and I don't really want that at my job.

ANYHOW. Been busy, things progressing, and basically ANet dropped an article the other day like "hey folks, shit takes time, mmmkay?" because people were howling that we're inept douches that weren't doing anything (someone actually apparently saw the pictures we'd taken on Halloween of the costumes we wore into work and was like "STOP DRESSING UP AND GIVE US GW2" as if putting on costumes kept us from making the game). YES we are working, I promise, no I can't really give you any new info, 'cause that's marketing's territory. But I can give clarifications on stuff! Mostly! If there's something that is REALLY pressing on your brain, PM me, otherwise post here and I'll try to get back to you a little more reliably than I have before. ;)

Could you use your influence to help a fellow Codexer retrieve his account, Annie? A dirty kwanzanian stole it, I contacted technical support and after half a million questions they still don't want to give it back to me :( The only thing that's left for them to ask is my penis size, and they're still unwilling to help, goddamit.

Alas, I fear I would not know how to aid you properly, Berekän - I'm on the GW2 side of things, and nowt to do with GW1 and billing (actually, I'm almost certain NCSoft handles that stuffs). The most I can recommend is persistence, asking nicely, and probably lying and saying things like "but my long-distance girlfriend is on GW and she's dying of cancer and Guild Wars is the only way I can contact her WHY DO YOU NOT WANT US TO BE TOGETHER WHYYYYY" and stuff like that.

In the meantime I shall ask folks at ANet who might know more about dealing with such things and see about getting you some kind of info to help. Sorry I can't help directly! :(

Oh, well, can't say I was expecting much more, but I'm glad you took the time to answer, thanks for everything and if you find someone at Anet who can help me I'd be very grateful ;)
