The day has come - Bethesda wants to revive another classic

(Ok, maybe not a classic but something famous.)

Apparently, in the Japanese Xbox magazine "Famitsu" Bethesda was busting about their FO3 sales (100,000 copies) and announced two things:

1. That now they will only release games that will get not less then "80%" from the professional journalists around the world.
2. They will release a game from a trademark that was created by different studio.

This rumor was spoted on polish game site and may be just a load of shit, but reading those two postulates is sounds like the kind of a shit Beth would say so...

Place your bets, what will it be this time.

Ultima Underworld

It was the game that introduced the world to first person view.

Isn't this quite a cocky thing to promise. Unless they are admitting that they pay for the reviews.

In first person perspective!

My bet is on Minesweepers. It seems open-ended enough, it's quite non-linear, not it just needs some more bloom and first person perspective and here you have it - the next generation of role-playing games

Well, going off the circumstances surrounding their acquisition of the Fallout licence, it will probably be a dormant IP that belongs to someone in financial trouble. Companies don't tend to sell IPs unless they really have to. This makes me think it probably wont be something owned by EA.

But EA aren't doing anything wth the Ultima liscense. Also, they might have only leased it. Finally, if UW isa success, then EA can cash in by telling Bioware to make a new Ultima. (ultima and ultima underworld are different series, though based in the same universe)

Planescape: Torment 2: Vhailor's Vengeance

As the legendary armour-clad enforcer of justice, you find yourself awakened after a century-long slumber by a mysterious force voiced by David Hayter. All you know is that the hero you once followed has been condemned to fight in some war between demons or some shit, and, with axe in hand, you set out to put things right and rescue the Nameless Hero who saved the universe (didn't he? Emil, check that out if you get the chance. Actually, nah, don't bother). And all who stand before you will learn that fate carries an executioner's axe.

Quests will include "collect 5 special ingredients to lay the ghost of Deionarra to rest", and "a shady fellow in the Smokin' Body Bar has asked me to find out what can change the nature of a man. I should use my mini Modron's built-in GPS to find the cult which allegedly knows the answer".

This is so hideous that it will probably happen.

Hmm, you know, it could even be Lands of Lore. If so, I will rejoice! Even if its by Bethesda. The original was simplistic in dialogue anyway (beths weak point...one of beths weak pts I mean) though it had a very charming and engasgin storyline.

I hope it is either Arcanum or Planescape. Another two years of nerdrage, drama, and hate in the Codex would be amazing entertainment, regardless of how good or bad the game ends up being.

God help us, I bet it's Planescape.

"Because people will go to great lengths to discover the nature of who they are, and blowing them to bloody chunks is often hilarious."

Omfg... WATCH THE SIGNS.

Some should spy on ESF. I have a tragic feeling that it will be Planescape.

It can't be PS:T, nor can it be VTM:B. Why? Cause:

1) Both settings are discontinued.
2) Both games are more story driven than open-world style.

So yes, it's Arcanum.

Both 1) and 2) are not a problem for Bethesda. They're good in altering the setting and games core systems (Turn based to VATS etc.) to their needs.

Because everyone knows Bethesda would never take on an IP that didn't fit to their strengths.

Arcanum would fit perfectly. Now you can have Oblivion with guns without removing the magic.

Didn't Atari get the license for all D&D related settings back from Interplay in 2008? (except maybe the rights/license to the BG1 and BG2?) If it is so, shouldn't it mean that Bethesda can't touch Planescape: Torment, Arcanum and other games that will require a D&D license - since Atari has the license from Hasbro?

And it can't be Planescape; Wizards of the Coast have deleted/eliminated/ the planes from the Forgotten Realms as I've read somewhere. (maybe even here - on the Codex...)

I've never heard of a game based on a setting discontinued years ago.

And even Bethesda can't make an Oblivion clone out of either of those games. See, they are city based, if I may say so. No way to alter that, without making Warcraft-esque retcons.
