So the first turn-based Obsidian game happens to be a fucking South Park JRPG? Our genre is severely doomed.

I won't argue with your other points, but do you think that the Wheel of Time game is just a cashgrab? I haven't read the books myself, but aren't they like legendary pieces of fantasy literature? I imagine a lot of people over at Obsidian must be jizzing their pants over the fact that they get to make a Wheel of Time game.

It's not turn based. It's timed X button presses.

Paper Mario was turn based iirc. It's just that the damage was determined around some element of mashing or timing buttons instead of a dice roll.

Kinda stupid thing to do but it was still tb combat.

I bet the unannounced class will be "Jew" and it'll be pure diplomacy and haggling.

I am pretty sure that the guys from Obsidian after having accepted the contract (and having thought about it), at one time said to each other: "Ha ha ha, there's gonna be some major butthurt on the Codex".

Personally, I think that WoT is shit and Jordan is a hack, but that's not what I meant.

http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/53041 ... ime-Titles

Red Eagle Games and Obsidian Entertainment today announced they have entered into a services agreement which provides a comprehensive framework for Obsidian Entertainment to work closely with Red Eagle Games' in-house development team to create new video games for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 based on Robert Jordan's best-selling fantasy series, The Wheel of Time.

"Although Red Eagle Games is both a game producer and publisher, as a new company, we quickly recognized that we could benefit from supplementing small in-house technical and creative teams with a proven third party developer," said Larry Mondragon, Chief Operating Officer of Red Eagle Games. "Our alliance with Obsidian Entertainment is a perfect fit and will greatly improve the quality, cost and time-to-market for the first-generation of our Wheel of Time games."

...

I would also like to make one additional clarification. We are not licensing our WOT development rights and stepping back from the process of building these video games. Quite to the contrary, Red Eagle Games will have an internal development team of its own. However, rather than staffing up a 200 person studio from scratch, we decided some time ago that for our first games it would be far more prudent to hire a small in-house team (e.g. positions such as Art Director, Game Designer, Story Writer, Software Architect, Quality Assurance Director, etc.) and rely on a third party developer to provide the majority of developers and their associated overhead and infrastructure. In this way, we will be providing technical and creative direction to our external developer."

In other words, Obsidian was hired as a subcontractor to do what the Red Eagle team tells them to, so it's not an Obsidian game.

Its not really clear to me what kind of "combat" there should be in a South Park game anyway.
Yeah, that kinda has me scratching my head as well.

Honestly I have no clue and can't even begin to speculate on things like the RPG mechanics, combat, dialogue, animation and other elements and how all of that can happen in an RPG while still being "South Park." So there's nothing for it but to withhold all judgement until they start talking about the game.

Jesus, still on this? It's obviously just a little side project for some extra moolah. They'll knock it off in 6 months with a small crew and see what happens. Maybe if all goes well Obsidian will make a bunch of these types of things for the Costume Quest type crowd while at the same time working on major projects. Shit, just the other day Avellone was saying how he prefers to make DLC's to full length games because of the quick turnaround(I'm guessing there's a bit of the 'beancounter guy in charge' in the answer too who feels best when there's a steady stream of revenue coming in) and this looks like a good low risk route to follow for an extra income stream.

If it makes you feel any better, apparently the butthurt was strong on NeoGaf too.

Obsidian doesn't want the player to have to sit and watch animations play out; they're incorporating dynamic camera angels at certain times, such as a Ro Sham Bo attack that stuns an enemy.

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up. Interesting (if not disappointing) piece of information there.

No, the series just sold very well. Apart from a few delusional fans nobody'd call it "literature", much less "legendary".

Ah, alright.

Yeah, I never meant to imply that it was really amazing. Like I said, just going off of what I've heard since I haven't read the series.

I never said it's a 3D game. It's 2D 3D. Or is it 3D 2D? I don't know.
What gives you the impression it's 3D in any way? Because it seems as though you think that because it's using Onyx.

These are both made with the Unity engine. Are you going to call Battleheart a 2D 3D/3D 2D game?

They've been working on this since July of last year (probably, that's how long Zane Lyon's been a project director) and going by some vague things Sawyer/Avellone have said, it has a full Obsidian team of 45-70 (which is small compared to everyone else, but normal for them and comparable to NV and DS3). I wouldn't really call it little either since it made the cover of Game Informer. There are only 12 months in a year, they're not going to waste their time/exclusive-preview-money on anything but the biggest, most hyped things ever.

was really looking forward to this game and had a lot of respect for Trey Parker up until this

-Lastly they joke how this Southpark game will be a cross between Obilivion and FIFA were “you gotta go kill a bunch of monsters and shit but you can only use your feet.”

Seriously.. This is fucking heartbreaking for them to say this. Given the crap Trey's had to go through most of his life, for him to start sucking Bethesda's cock I'd argue is pretty freaking degrading, I mean.. Bethesda is owned by one of the most Elitist Money Grabbing Holywood Companies on the planet, its owned by the likes of Jery Bruckheimer (the Video Game Movie rapist), Linda Carter's scum bag husband and Donald Trumps scumbag brother.. How the fuck can you respect assholes like that.

I'm sorry but wow.. Credibility is totally gone now. I hope this game flops.
It sounds like a QTE infested JRPG wannabe, with good writing and a good IP. First day Pirate for me, they lost their sale.
The world would be a better place if Zenimax would just roll over and die..

Double fucking standards much. I will be really upset if the game ends up satiring good RPGs and putting Zenimax on a podium to proclaim its dominance over the entire industry.

Fuck this.. we're not fucking slaves. Fuck you Trey, you call yourself a gamer. You bag out some of the worst fucking films ever made but your taste in games isn't any fucking better.

I am disappointed that this is going to be some shitty "RPG" title and not an Adventure game.
A South Park point and click adventure game would be glorious.

But an SP RPG? What the fuck? :rpgcodex:
