sounds like graphics-whorism to me and about as irrelevant as the fact that even with new art assets it will still be the same game. the only (minor) possible issue is new dlc having mechanics upgrades like new classes that do not roll out into regular patches.

well duh. that's the case for most steam games which are additionally distributed elsewhere (not counting publisher dd platforms) since most of them have a fuckton of steam-exclusive dlc. it's one of the ways in which valve kills the competition.
He's full of shit as usual.

Nobody in their right mind would pay for his games what he used to charge before steam, except for the semi-autistic people that make their rounds on the spiderweb forums.
now you are just being stupid.

And yet that mindset has kept him in business for two decades now. How many 20+ year old RPG developers still exist?

It's the same game if you substitute everything for prosper creatures too. If you're autistic.

Yes but they marketed the game as DRM-free and then offered it as the inferior option, I guess it's ok because it's a developer that is on the cool list.

Well, he perfected the art of making the same games over and over plus he has stabilished customers. Not having a big company to run helps too.

pretty sure the drm-free stuff was always worded like some tacked on bonus and never advertised as the main dish. at least that's the impression i got back when i pledged.

sounds to me as if they ended up on your own cool list and you started expecting more out of them than what they actually said, not less, like a codexer or any gamer who's been around for a few years should. it's ok because it is more or less exactly what they promised.

That might not be entirely wrong to be honest.

How heavy are the RPG elements going to be? Am I going to get a full stat sheet and all that shit to level up? Non combat skills too? Because I have not seen much of that aspect, so without that and no looting I don't know why I wouldn't just play Alpha Protocol or some shit.

A comparison of a top-down tactical turn-based game and a third-person action game. You just can't make this shit up.

Anyway, we won't have an idea of the depth of RPG elements until release, but here's two seconds of Google:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/01/02/shadowrun-returns-online-feature.aspx

I'm sure even a stop by their website could tell you more.

There's also the various videos of custom modules for the people who got the alpha. You can see character creation in most of them.

There's at least 3 installments of an alpha build Let's Play in which the guy levels up a few times. If you care, you can see the skills there.

On an unrelated note, does your handle mean "Florida cracker?"

Being on a 16 hour flight and realizing that you can't play the games you paid for.
Offline mode works indefinitely now, that's not an issue.

Anywho: I'm thinking of a secret number of copies of Shadowrun Returns (>7, <19) which I'll Steam gift to the less fortunate of us here at the Codex who live in potato and so on.

However, every time some apologist excuses the Harebrained bait-and-switch from here on out, that number will decrease by 1.

Yeah, when I was able to connect again and switched modes. But that still pissed me off.

Did you get early access to the editor?

Nope. I'd thought I pledged for Shadowrun Returns, but in the morass of various Kickstarter pledges I made last year, I recently discovered that I apparently hadn't. I probably hallucinated it into my long list at some point.

I'd be paying for those copies out of pocket.

I find it hilarious that you're going to offer steam copies only if people agree that them going with steam for post-berlin and workshop content was a bad thing.

Who said they have to agree? They don't have to say anything.

They just have to avoid quoting dissenting minority opinions and arguing them to death page after page after page until the dissidents finally give up because it's not worth arguing about anymore.

Slimy shit that essentially boils down to, "Well, they didn't outright SAY that the DRM-free copy wouldn't be gimped and ineligible for all expansions" is what I find hilarious.

Look at Excidium over the last couple of pages. He's not going to give up anytime soon. Clearly we must whiteknight Harebrained until you no longer give out steam keys, lest he be tainted by a steam game.

Also, back in Ye Old Days with Neverwinter Nights, most modules didn't require SoU/HotU expansions precisely because the mod authors didn't want to limit their potential audience to a subset of the playerbase. And let's not get started on the dumbfucks who claim the non-steam version won't have editor/module access. It just won't be through the steam workshop for reasons that should bloody well be obvious.

I don't have anything against Steam, just dishonest developers. Steam is good during sales.

Gonna have to ask DU to filter the words "looting" and "scripting" then

Just so we're clear:

Well, I'm starting to get hyped. When the Kickstarter began, I thought it sounded pretty neat; for the first nine months or so, I figured it would serve as a nice distraction while awaiting meatier efforts (PE et al.); I thought it looked pretty swank when they released the gameplay video; now that it's close to release, I'm leaning toward Game of the Space-time Continuum.

That bait-and-switch-flavored nonsense they pulled with DRM/expansions/the editor is a turd in the punch bowl, though. I don't care if it's likely they had no choice in the matter—they were disingenuous during the campaign.

Hummf, If you already have 8-18 copies of SRR to gift (otherwise, it awfully looks like shortselling!), then preventing you from gifting them to someone in Potato Land might have a non zero probability of you gifting them outside of potato land.
I say it's worth looking for excuses.
