ITT Blaine proves the Indoctrination Theory.

Dexter is a lone beacon of sanity amidst the swirling chaos of crowd scamming madness.

Although if everyone has fun with the game when it is released would they really be scammed?

ITT Blaine proves the Indoctrination Theory.

Dexter is a lone beacon of sanity amidst the swirling chaos of crowd scamming madness.

There are two questions of great import: "If a Hornet costs X credits, how long will it take the average player to earn X credits?" and "Can Chris Roberts truly deliver all the features he's promised?" I'm just as anxious as Grunker or Dexter to know the answers to those questions, and I want the same outcomes they want, but in the meantime I choose the role of optimistic enthusiast rather than doomsaying pessimist here at the Codex. On the Star Citizen forums, I often adopt the role of advocatus diaboli and argue vehemently against stupidity such as long grinds to earn ship hulls—for example, more than a few high-dollar backers believe that a Hornet, which costs $110 as a pledge add-on, should take an average player 100-150 hours to earn. I consider this absolute madness, and argue that 15-30 hours (30 being the absolute most) is much more appropriate.

Unfortunately, the economy update, while appreciated, does very little to answer that question. We probably won't know the answer until closed beta.

Having said that, I received Wing Commander for Christmas in 1990 at the age of 8 and played it, its expansions, and Wing Commander II and its expansions until Privateer was released in 1993, at which point I had a religious experience and passed the point of no return. I went on to play every game in the series since. Certainly I'm indoctrinated, but I came by it honestly. I'll give my left testicle to play a modern Privateer with a real economy and other players to fight that looks like this (while wearing the Oculus Rift, at any rate):

You will never get any answer to that question on rsi forums , and never any update about how many hours of game play are required to get x ship. Whatever the answer could be some people wont be statisfied and you dont need bad pr when trying to gather funds. Backers indeed expect great priviledges when paying the considerable amount 100$ and expect it to be a long and painfully grind for the others who dont pay.
We can only get vague info like this economic update wich can be easily summed up, npc are doing trade circuits like in x3 , you can step in and do it instead or plunder the convoy.Server willi issue missions if there are shortage of goods in a sytem. But again no idea of the value of the cargo , if piracy will be viable, how many cargo to take down to buy some caterpillar. No info on maintenance costs, docking fee , nothing anwywhere.

Not this backer. Those dumbfucks should be rounded up and gassed.

In my opinion, we don't yet know the specifics of "X credits per hour" because Cloud Imperium Games doesn't even know. They haven't actually implemented the economy or the mission boards yet. The closed beta's still 17-18 months away. You're a bit off about one thing: Unless CIG seriously fucks up, piracy will be completely viable and Chris wholeheartedly advocates it as a vital gameplay style.

Yes but sadly rounding them up will be too much work, its a mentality that is widely spread, we are speaking of millions of people . For having played mmos for ages i can tell many players are prima donnas expecting, instant gratification, the best gear possible and much much better and satisfying : Others not having it . Maybe cloud imperium dont know yet , but if they do it will be a very bad idea to tell to those people that getting a capital ship take 50 hours of gameplay, at least before fokring them some 5000$ destroyers.

50 hours later...

14mscammed.png

$14m raised! That means:
  • Hibernation Mode: for the explorers out there, we will add the ability to save and resume while you are out in space. When not in combat, power your ship down, hit the bunk, and exit the game safely until you can resume your journey.
  • Professional-quality feature-length “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary film.
  • A fourth landout option on Earth! Where will it be? London? Berlin?

$15m goal (this will take far longer to reach) will be:
  • Additional flyable ship class: escort carrier
  • The Upgrade Handbook: an extra 42-page manual that walks players through the process of customizing and overclocking their ship systems! (PDF free to all backers before $15 million)

$16m goal will be revealed as part of reaching the $14m goal.

Say what you will about the game itself but, dang, Chris Roberts can generate some crowd-funded money..... Puts Brian Fargo to shame in the salesmanship department!! Imagine the cRPG we could get with InXile/Obsidian getting this kind of publisher-free money?!

Things have slowed down considerably since yesterday, but I bet they'll cook up some devious money-making scheme and unleash it during GamesCon.

There's going to be boarding parties?

There's going to be boarding parties?

Yes indeed. Before it can be boarded, the target ship must be rendered unmaneuverable, meaning its primary and maneuvering thrusters (or perhaps its power plant; no word on that yet) must be damaged to the point of inoperability. This will be accomplished through precision aim and is described as a high-skill endeavor.

The boarding ship must be fitted with a docking collar device and tractor beam, and must be smaller than target ship (or perhaps it can be the same size or smaller; no word on that yet). Once the target ship is safely disabled, the boarding ship may then move in, immobilize the target ship with its tractor beam, and connect its docking collar to one of the target ship's designated airlocks. The boarding party must then cut through the airlock a la Star Wars: A New Hope.

Once the airlock is cut open, the fun begins, first-person shooter style.

Essentially, the target ship will be hogtied, held down, and entered by an ovipositor which forcefully discharges a bunch of marines into the victim's insides. Just look at this space rapist:

Freelancer was a fucking awful game from a ship-piloting perspective. No Newtonian physics whatsoever, you couldn't even roll, the gamespace barely qualified as 3D, and the controls were mouse-centric. Chris left the project almost a year and a half early, and it shows.

Freelancer was basically Oblivion in space, except really pretty and with combat you could enjoy, maybe.

Also, this FPS boarding party shit sounds like it has potential to be really bad, not to mention a huge waste of development resources. Did backers ask him for this?

It's been planned from the beginning, and the vast majority of backers are excited about it. Even most Codexers seem pleased that it's a planned feature.

Good catch noting that if it's bad no one will like it. That hadn't occurred to me until now.

I'm honestly not sure whether you really don't understand what I'm saying, or if you're just taking a page out of J_C's book and suspending common sense to fellate your favourite game developer...
