Decline PS4 wins the console war against XboxONE, yet it is a hollow victory as Consolesdämmerung is upon us

Fuck the women, where are the transsexuals? I'm also not sure if the gays are properly represented, maybe Sony should have had one of those guys come out on stage.

I wonder if 1.6 ghz per core isn't too low and couldn't cause problems, especially since developers still have problems programming to multiple core systmems.

Considering it's AMD, yeah that's surprisingly low. Unless it's an as-of-unreleased AMD CPU design that is significantly better, competitive with Intel on a Hertz to Hertz basis. Even still it's probably some 2-3x faster than the xbox on a per-core basis.

EDIT: Wait, if it's a jaguar AMD that means... (searches internet for information on shitty AMD CPUs), yeah it's even worse than bulldozer. This is really weird, a budget laptop CPU.

I counted at least three or four of those.
They were very well represented.

So is this shit going to cost nine hundred and ninety nine US Dollars on launch or what?

Rumor was $400 but everyone seems to be thinking now the specs are too high for that. Sony is known to take a loss on hardware though.

Too high? Pretty sure you could get the equivalent or better off newegg deals.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103961

8-core AMD bulldozer @ 3.1 GHz (massively overbuying but there is no "jaguar" product line yet) - $130

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135318

Motherboard, cheapest I can find (consoles don't need features of more expensive ones and Sony will be able to get even cheaper stuff by cutting more unneeded parts anyway) - $40

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161426

Radeon 7850 HD (from wikipedia it's apparently about 1.8 teraflops, so I'm assuming this is approximately what Sony has in the PS4) - $165

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104333

8 GB of RAM DDR3 RAM (I know it's not GDDR5, but we also have a dedicated Graphics card with it's own dedicated 1 GB of GDDR5, so we aren't that far off) - $40

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016

Antec Power supply. Much more expensive, but I'm paying for Antec quality over brands I don't even know of - $65

Only thing I'm leaving out is the case. Throw in another $10 for whatever the black box with the "PLAYSTATION 4" logo costs?

Total - $450

Now keep in mind that I bought a CPU that is something like 3x faster than the PS4's (at least, dunno how the jaguar architecture stacks up). I bought a power supply that is more expensive than needed (and the PS4's parts will need a much weaker one in the first place since it's basically a laptop CPU/GPU combo). Sony will be getting the actual parts far cheaper than I can buy at retail (mass production/middlemen not taking cut), and I didn't even try to get "sale" prices on newegg that appear on a weekly/daily basis or pricematch with any other sites.

You know guys, I rewatched some of these...err "gameplay" demos again, and all I see is further Hollywood-ification of games. I felt nothing.

Then I rewatch that Aliens RPG pre-Alpha demo from Obsidian, and all of a sudden I feel excitement, sorrow, nostalgia etc. Not even David "Emotion-Man(tm)" Cage could invoke that feeling inside me with his old dude demo.

Well rumor has that the PS4 will be around 4-500 dollars, so you are on point (IF the rumors are true). But you still have to include the price of the controller with a built in touchpad and the HD camera (PS Eye will be bundled probably to every system).

Well they are right. They didn't really show us anything about the PS4. Just some vague concepts and promises, and tech demos running off a PC.

I said it before and I'll say it again:
"Next gen" games will look pretty much like current gen.
Higher resolution and/or fps, better textures and fancy stuff like SSAO/AA - basically what you get on pc already with a half-way decent console port.

Unfortunately they likely won't use the hardware for innovative stuff (like, good gameplay for once, or trying something fresh).

People are debating how real the Killzone footage was but if you look at high-res captures of the video it basically looks like a current-gen game's PC version.

I think they definitely touched it up in a video editing program, but nonetheless it did look like an improvement on anything the 360 and ps3 produced. it was hard to tell how much though because we were watching a video of a video.

regardless, if they have launch titles that are looking better than the best the 360/ps3 can produce that means that when they get familiar with the console and learn how to fully optimize there is going to be a significant jump over the previous gen.

remember that the current gens console hardware is from 2003, its virtually impossible not to improve on that, even if it is currently outdated tech on a PC

It's anyway hard to tell with anything we'll see right now.
Early games on the current console generation looked worse than more recent ones (compare e.g. Oblivion to Skyrim or BF3), I guess it takes some time until the devs know how to utilize the hardware and optimize for it.
On the other hand a very impressive vid might just be a highly optimized tech demo that will never make it into games like that.

It seriously just looks like a PC version of Crysis 2 or something to me. Maybe I am just someone that doesn't see little differences though.
