I tried to get out of town, but turns out there's still plenty to do before leaving.

As we approach the sewer exit into a city - someone familiar steps out of the darkness.

Owyn's like herpes - can't get rid of him and he comes when we least expect him.

Trip eh? Didn't even try to sell it as a little discreet walk into the town.

Hmmm, Krondor seemed quite large. Surprised the kid couldn't find something fun to do.

Well, guess he has some brains after all.

I wish I could say the same about myself...

Turns out the kid is something of Sherlock Holmes and clearly fell in love with the adventure.

Its interesting as to the lengths they went to - plant someone in Gorath's room. Pretend Locky is still in the palace. And it took Owyn next to no time to figure it all out.

I don't remember much about James's thieving days - wonder who he's alluding to.

It's like meeting a puppy on the road.

Gorath's personality doesn't really fit into the marry elf or the bloodthirsty barbarian stereotype.

Heh, Gorath spent all that time winning Locky over. Now he has to start from scratch.

Owyn has learned from his conversation with Locky in the beginning of the game. But... how did he know we're going East?

Tis true. Plus who are we kidding? We'll need Owyn's magical skills.

Uncle James... I'd like to do #2. We're already in the sewer after all.

The kid is so excited - you might almost forget last time he got pulled into this he spent a month getting attacked by sword wielding dark elves.

Nah, James won't regret when enemies start going blind mid battle.

So out in the town we sell some of that extra equipment. Some of the stuff is higher quality, like this crossbow from the first chest that blew us up.

And it turns out we can play the lute again.

All in all, we're good on gold for now!

Lets see what our long nosed friend has to say now. Something about Nia I believe?

Anyway, Nivek reminded us that there's a chest in the sewers we could not open. James is a lot better at lockpicking - perhaps he could succeed? But as soon as we go in we notice enemies in the chamber straight ahead.

Due to one set of weedwalkers we now have 2 party members skilled at stealth, too bad the 3rd value is still low.

James might be a poor fighter for now - but he's fast! Goes before anyone else.

James charges caster and misses.

Owyn gets shot for 6. Charges the caster instead and hits him for 6.

Caster retaliates but misses.
I misclick Gorath and he skips his turn
James chases caster and hits this time for 27.

He then gets shot for 6 by the damned archer.
Owyn swings but misses.

Caster runs - either to run away or to cast spells.
Gorath gets in range of the archer and hits for 26.

James hits the caster again for 27. That's enough for that guy to go down.

Owyn assesses - apparently that enemy type is a Quegian pirate.

Pirate charges James but misses him.
Gorath chases and ends the fight with a thrust for 28.

I love seeing gold on enemies we defeat.

Good stuff on these two.

So we head towards where the chest was and about 70% of the way there we notice more enemies ahead.

And no luck with stealth.

It's 5 enemies with 2 spellcasters among them!
One of the enemies charges James but misses.
James charges and misses the caster.

Gorath is attacked and missed. Another enemy gets into range with Owyn.
Owyn if forced to charge the other spell caster instead. At least he hits - 6 damage.

Gorath charges the same caster - but the caster parries.

James chases the first caster but misses again.

2 Fighters gang up on Owyn but both miss.
Owyn lands a swing on the caster he's in melee range with. 19!

The enemy casters keep running around in order to get their spells off, but we keep chasing them. Gorath catches one - his thrust does 43! damage. I think the enemy casters have really low defense skills. Obviously that guy goes down.

James is missed. He chases the other caster and hits - only 25 though.

Owyn is attacked twice - one enemy misses him with a swing - another hits with a thrust - 9 damage. He defends.
Gorath fails to finish the other caster due to a miss.

James does better by hitting for 25 again, but the caster is still up.

Owyn gets attacked twice. Despite his block - the result is the same, one of the enemies gets a hit for 9 in. He defends again.
Gorath finishes the caster with a thrust for 43.

Owyn is attacked twice. A swing gets through his guard and hits for 12.
While Gorath is trying to get in range an enemy catches up with him and hits him for 8.
James misses.

Owyn manages to fend off all the attacks this time. Defends again.
Gorath gets in range and hits a guy for 29.

James lands a thrust for 19 on the same guy.

Owyn joins in on the party and finishes that guy with a swing for 14.

Gorath's attempt to attack another guy is parried. James is attacked with a swing and hit for 11.

James retaliates for 18.

Gorath gets in a swing through the block for 37.

Enemy misses James and James returns the favor.
Gorath finishes his enemy with a thrust for 28.

Enemy misses James and James returns the favor once again.

Gorath misses the last guy as well.

That guy once again misses James. Owyn is resting meanwhile.
James fails to hit that guy once again.

Gorath does not - a thrust for 28 is enough to finish this crazy fight. Looks like we've still got it despite the absence of our mustached superstar.

There was only one skill increase.

Here comes the loot.

Right after the alcove to the chest there are more enemies.

We we manage to get in there without triggering the encounter.

Huh. James IS good for something.

Would that archery was actually good.

This is that lightning bolt spell. Since its guaranteed to hit I might actually use it.

Let's hope we get on our way to Darkmoor in the next session.

I never, as in never got very far with this game. As in nowhere near Krondor. Guess I sorta just gave up as I didn't quite figure out how to play it smart.
So it's good to see this lp! Keep it up.

Owyn has a good character arc. At first he annoyed me as this kid we had to drag along (even worse, I was an annoying kid like him at that age so it was destroying my escapism) but he gradually growed on me.

I used Skyfire a lot in the mid-game because it can be devastating against a single opponent. And crippling one enemy in the first turn can be critical in some of these fights. The trouble is you've got to learn who is especially vulnerable to it and who is immune.

First we sneak past that group near the chest and get out of the sewers. Its not really our job to be clearing that stinky labyrinth of vagrants that choose to infest it. Besides - our packs were full of stuff already. Which we sell in town. Some of the stuff sells quite well.

Then we head on out of Krondor and take the South path at the crossroads. It immediately turns east.

Very quickly after - we hit the end of this zone.

And apparently get to a less forested terrain. It should be easier to find hidden chests now.

Huh, even the trees changed. And... is that buildings?

Oh my, it dumped us out all the way near Darkmoor.

Well, lets check the buildings.

What is this? A vampire waiting for us in there?

Rusalki is the Russian word for Mermaids. I guess we'll have to brave the potential vampire to find out more.

Next house is a bit bigger.

Ok, this lady has one of those disabilities where they can't understand social norms...

Which her husband somehow learned too late. I guess this explains why her house is bigger.

Oh, this is nice. Those little crossbows sell for like 15 gold too.

Wait! That's a lot of books for a general store!

So... books in this game are like the training sessions. I believe this particular one increases Appraisal - which is hard to tell from this description.

Think this one increases weaponsmithing and armorsmithing. Kinda expensive.

And this one will increase Defense! We'll be buying it. As a bonus it tells us where we can find a Temple of Dala. Its one of the temples that can bless items to +15% so this is good to know.

One more book, and its a jackpot.

While it sounds useless - the book increases EVERY skill. By the way - there was a side quest out of Yabon that would earn us a free copy. But we never went to Yabon...

So we haggle the price down a bit and buy it.

We also haggle down the defense skill book.

By the way, haggling is variable. Like there are different success levels. This merchant was tough to haggle with so we were lucky to get this.

Each book has 100!!! uses. But it only has its full effect once. I hear they can sometimes increase more skill on repeated readings, but I've never tried it. Reading books takes a lot of in game time and we're usually on a mission that at least seems time critical.

Let's read the bird Jackpot.

Sounds like a very confused book.

But we can't argue with results. By the way - I decided to focus on Casting Accuracy instead of Defense as being able to hit with some of the chance to hit spells might be useful. The bonuses were +5% to all non focused skills and +8% to the focused skill.

Reading this book took us into the night. So lets check on the vampire lady.

Ok, think our necks are safe. There are actually no vampires in Betrayal at Krondor. But:

There are actually quite a few in the strange sequel: Return to Krondor. The seemed out of place, I don't remember vampires ever appearing in the books.

Sounds like the Magic Touch of Death (or the goddess of death) is an antidote to Rusalki. I... don't remember such a spell so I'm not sure what she's talking about. My strategy with Rusalki and Shades is usually just to Skin of the Dragon everyone.

James is next to ready the book of birds.

Followed by Gorath.

Now we read the other book.

I like how the game has helpful hints everywhere.

Seems like with Defense being in focus this book gives a bonus of only 6%.

It's still nice obviously.

We're going to keep these two books I think. There are some more personnel changes in the future and the new party members will welcome the stat boosts.

Next is a well.

And its nothing special.

This village is large, there are more houses.

But a lot of them are abandoned. A lot of places like this in the world nowadays.

What a strange combination of items.

So... this is Caroline, she's somewhat similar to her sister.

She sounds starved for attention. But we're not looking to settle down.

Is this an inn?

Nice. Half the town is abandoned but this place is packed!

And we get paid almost as well as in Krondor!

Most of the people here seem to be of the usual gossip variety, but I have not seen this one before.

Ah a tale of a wily man defeating both a giant brute and a spoiled wench.

This reminds me of a trip to Vegas where I witnessed some trashcan arm-wrestling. The two dudes were surrounded by a gaggle of onlookers. It seemed like one of those scenes where the dice hustlers get a dude - except it was arm wrestling - on a trashcan.

Wow, and the dude made bank. Who hustled whom?

James can easily pick peasant locks at this point, but I guess he won't always be with us.

Rusalki are much darker than mermaids. They're the tortured souls of girls who drowned in rivers or something and they try to lure people to their deaths. I dunno, there's people who are actually Russian here who I'm sure know this way better than I do.

In the game they are extremely dangerous opponents, especially in this chapter. I can't remember if there's a spell to counter them, but I'd just advise you to bug out if you run into opposition close to a river and try to find another way around it.

I dig the basic flamecast too. It's good against massed enemies, both for the AoE but also harder to miss when there's guys standing next to each other.

As we get out of Darkmoor there's a bit of a forest on the left - I decide to fire off a cast of Eyes of Ishap. There appears to be 2 vessels in the corner to our north. Score!

And apparently they're guarded by a trap.

This looks complicated...

We take a moment to 'rest' up Owyn's hp. Eyes of Ishap are expensive at 10 hp per cast.

And then all we seem to need to do is push the diamond forward once.

And go around it.

There's our prize.

The one in the back is a bit too easy.

They could have made it harder by leaving the club out of it.

That's a lot of Strength potions. Maybe I'll start giving them to James before fights so that he can at least hit as hard as Gorath when he does hit.

This one took me a little bit. So I'll let those that want to solve it give it a try. The combos are:

Another set of decent armor. But we're all good on those.

A little further up the road we notice a temple.

Ruthia is the Goddess of Luck.

Yeah, this is definitely worth the money if we really have to go that far. Hell, maybe we will at some point - remember that trapped chest in the Dwarven Caverns? Doubt it will be worth taking two teleports though.

We try to talk to the head priestess - but this is probably the most realistic outcome out of all the temples so far.

While we're here. Lets see how much it costs to bless our higher tier weapon.

And armor? Ouch, even more expensive.

When we step out its dark. Damned priestess made us waste half a day.

We rest up till morning and move on. But suddenly!

Whoa, that's a lot of them! I don't know how I didn't see them, I was searching for loot off the path, maybe if I was on the road I would have. Or maybe this was an ambush.
Anyway the fight starts with Gorath getting hit for 12 and James getting hit for 13. I will not be reporting enemy misses as they are too numerous.
James misses.

Owyn misses too.

Gorath does not - lands a swing for 39.

Enemies attack several times. Gorath gets hit for 15.
James goes after the one Gorath injured. Lands a hit for 20!

Owyn makes the fight a little easier with a swing for 14. That guy is down.

Gorath tries another swing but its parried.

Among the attacks - a swing lands on Gorath for 19.
James fails to land a thrust.

Owyn lands a swing though - 13.

Gorath lands a swing for 39 on the same guy.

But another hit on Gorath comes in for 19. That enemy is either really strong or has a better weapon.
James fails to make a hit again.

James gets hit right back - only for 9 though.
Owyn is once again the finisher with a swing for 15.

Gorath isn't that much into his health yet. Goes for a thrust on the dude that keeps hitting him so hard. Lands for 27.

James finally hits. 18. I miss Locky...

Owyn can't get a thrust on the damaging enemy.

Gorath can - another thrust for 27.

James charges him too, but can't hit. Gets hit instead for 10 for his trouble.

Owyn's swing is no good.

Gorath's thrust finishes the big bad with a hit for 29.

James misses.

Owyn's swing is blocked.

And so is Gorath's.
And so is James' thrust.

Owyn's swing just plain misses.

Gorath gets a thrust in for 26 however.

James still can't get a hit.

Owyn is not having much luck with his thrusts either.

Gorath lands a good swing for 34.

James finally hits - 18.

Continuing the theme - Owyn finishes an enemy with a swing for 13. Owyn the shaolin monk.

Gorath finishes the fight with a thrust for 27.

Owyn's martial skills on display.

Gorath taking all those hits also taught him something. His actual value is higher though, his a bit under max hp at the moment.

How are we supposed to dig out individual corpses from THAT?

Nice crossbow, and what is this?

Tuning Fork can be used to make Trolls flee. We'll be meeting Trolls later on in the game, they are really strong and have a lot of hp.

This must be the guy that was hitting Gorath so hard, what is that sword?

I'm not sure why this hastly made weapon is better than the standard broadswords we started the game with.

Whoa! Gorath is getting this, its made for an elf.

Here's the 2 hander for comparison. Straight up damage upgrade to both attack types and Gorath should be slightly better at hitting with this thing due to racial stuff.

This guy is less exciting.

It clears up poison which gets a bit more common and we already saw how painful it was to heal without the antidote.

We find a cemetery.

I get the bright idea that Eyes of Ishap might be a work around for finding which graves are item caches. But either the spell does not work on graves or there are no such graves here.

A few moves from a book does not generally make much difference. Well - guess opening theory wasn't that much of a thing so maybe some opening traps could be difficult to deal with.

A single pawn often decides the game at high level.

Think by 'move' he means combination.

There are quite a few gambits in chess. About half of them are dubious or worse. But a lot are played at high level. The point is usually to sacrifice a pawn or two get a lead in development and/or open up lines of attack.

Generally the gambits are well defined parts of opening theory - so not sure how one could try to employ it in the wrong place without messing up the move order of the opening.

Life must have been tough before chess websites. Now you can just hop on and see all the moves grandmasters make in given positions and how often the lead to each result type.
