I tried to get out of town, but turns out there's still plenty to do before leaving.

As we approach the sewer exit into a city - someone familiar steps out of the darkness.

i-s47mDQ2-M.png

Owyn's like herpes - can't get rid of him and he comes when we least expect him.

i-XJVmNm4-M.png

Trip eh? Didn't even try to sell it as a little discreet walk into the town.

i-g29BdKD-M.png

Hmmm, Krondor seemed quite large. Surprised the kid couldn't find something fun to do.

i-J2cLxhK-M.png

Well, guess he has some brains after all.

i-7jJkfCG-M.png

I wish I could say the same about myself...

i-w53tkdV-M.png

Turns out the kid is something of Sherlock Holmes and clearly fell in love with the adventure.

i-6RjjB8z-M.png

Its interesting as to the lengths they went to - plant someone in Gorath's room. Pretend Locky is still in the palace. And it took Owyn next to no time to figure it all out.

i-M2Q2m8P-M.png

I don't remember much about James's thieving days - wonder who he's alluding to.

i-8nxbv4L-M.png

It's like meeting a puppy on the road.

i-2nmffjV-M.png

Gorath's personality doesn't really fit into the marry elf or the bloodthirsty barbarian stereotype.

i-QZBGLJv-M.png

Heh, Gorath spent all that time winning Locky over. Now he has to start from scratch.

i-GHWkhb4-M.png

Owyn has learned from his conversation with Locky in the beginning of the game. But... how did he know we're going East?

i-mwPq6NS-M.png

Tis true. Plus who are we kidding? We'll need Owyn's magical skills.

i-pZFGgMJ-M.png

New party leader, same old story.

i-7GcFphN-M.png

Uncle James... I'd like to do #2. We're already in the sewer after all.

i-NL3FQPX-M.png

The kid is so excited - you might almost forget last time he got pulled into this he spent a month getting attacked by sword wielding dark elves.

i-jx5P6tB-M.png

Nah, James won't regret when enemies start going blind mid battle.

i-hq8q6rF-M.png

So out in the town we sell some of that extra equipment. Some of the stuff is higher quality, like this crossbow from the first chest that blew us up.

i-s2BnLLN-M.png

And it turns out we can play the lute again.

i-2L8xvgG-M.png

All in all, we're good on gold for now!

i-NPvPTMt-M.png

Lets see what our long nosed friend has to say now. Something about Nia I believe?

i-LMdrwtS-M.png

Nosy Finance Minister? Probably helps in his line of work.

i-5htv2dG-M.png

With that nose he might as well say 'smell you'.

i-MtVZkqL-M.png

Hmmm, well with the coming war and all...

i-qBVvQdF-M.png

A broke Finance Minister???

i-cv2zhgz-M.png

Well I suppose we're rolling in money and can afford to buy this guy a round.

i-KhgWV6T-M.png

A Fiance Minister that's also a gossip - a man of many talents.

i-b2KTPxQ-M.png

He's hiccuping already? Perhaps he's broke because he's already been here for a while.

i-Mb2mMHF-M.png

What is it about cheating wives that draws us all in?

i-9JGs6c9-M.png

The what now?

i-X7swwfN-M.png

Theoretically we shouldn't be here at all since we're supposed to sneak out of Krondor...

i-86p3Gp6-M.png

Really? Ok...

i-vr4nQ9h-M.png

Hmmm, a lot of purchases at once could be a sign of some nefariousness I suppose. Then again Sethanon was destroyed - perhaps people are moving out and an enterprising individual is simply buying goods when they're low?

i-HMMF2wq-M.png

Not sure why we're playing IRS agents...

i-td3H6gh-M.png

Perhaps he's a really good business man?

i-Jn79VK6-M.png

There might be a dark elf invasion coming, but that can't stop an IRS audit.

i-xpn5gNQ-M.png

The hell? Doesn't he work with the prince as the Minister of Finance?

i-2vQGZDC-M.png

I thought all the fools that live in Kingdoms fawn over the royalty. All the Brits seem obsessed.

i-6wB2Xwv-M.png

Lol, the drink is getting to him.

i-JjbRHMk-M.png

I guess James is a bit of a bulldog. Just can't let go.

i-stjWZTC-M.png

I guess he does carry a ledger in his head.

i-dmt6Jqh-M.png

Is James REALLY a friend of this guy? Doesn't seem to be treating him like one.

i-cxCG2Q8-M.png

I feel dirty. We're enabling alcoholism.

i-GxFdKBJ-M.png

Sounds like he's too drunk to be useful.

i-Dd7TKC2-M.png

Why don't you leave it to the militia James?

i-ZTdTgkH-M.png

So I guess we're carrying about 1200 loads of cow manure in our purse.

i-xvFFsFK-M.png

James is a man of singular focus.

i-fch6bh9-M.png

Moxie Flipper? Do we even have the right name?

i-jmrPLb7-M.png

Guess James thinks the original name was correct.

i-5nhxX7W-M.png

Dig to scare?

i-ngfDpkf-M.png

A corpse or something? How does Nivek know this anyway?

i-nk8XXNC-M.png

Poor wretch.

i-Pvpnt78-M.png

James, have you heard of abusive relationships?

i-R4KT3wX-M.png

Ugh. How long can this man's liver last?

i-2TSJrVt-M.png

Graybeard? Maybe a gravestone?

i-b7CQ4cL-M.png

If Nivek knows all the details, why hasn't he gone to authorities?

i-GVt53LL-M.png

We've got Ghostbusters up in here.

i-twLL6jm-M.png

I'd think it wouldn't still be in the hole James.

i-29CXC9b-M.png

Just don't drink and drive a horse or a cart Nivek.

i-tjBHP5r-M.png

My god...

i-HrWdFJZ-M.png

Undertaker key in the Sewers? He tried to sell it to him? Maybe this has to do with that rusted door in the sewers?

i-MQN3wTP-M.png

Maybe you shouldn't have tried to poison this man with alcohol?

i-FqsKLr3-M.png

If you puke on James it would be just reward.

i-3vf8V6k-M.png

We abused him enough 3 drinks ago...

i-xrd9Dfp-M.png

Anyway, Nivek reminded us that there's a chest in the sewers we could not open. James is a lot better at lockpicking - perhaps he could succeed? But as soon as we go in we notice enemies in the chamber straight ahead.

i-MLqFbQn-M.png

Due to one set of weedwalkers we now have 2 party members skilled at stealth, too bad the 3rd value is still low.

i-fZnJS8S-M.png

James might be a poor fighter for now - but he's fast! Goes before anyone else.

i-cbtXR2q-M.png

James charges caster and misses.

i-cvtnSQn-M.png

Owyn gets shot for 6. Charges the caster instead and hits him for 6.

i-5cjDGrL-M.png

Caster retaliates but misses.
I misclick Gorath and he skips his turn :(
James chases caster and hits this time for 27.

i-C8wbdMw-M.png

He then gets shot for 6 by the damned archer.
Owyn swings but misses.

i-jL8gnZ7-M.png

Caster runs - either to run away or to cast spells.
Gorath gets in range of the archer and hits for 26.

i-FS9VBpX-M.png

James hits the caster again for 27. That's enough for that guy to go down.

i-4m2ncb7-M.png

Owyn assesses - apparently that enemy type is a Quegian pirate.

i-GQm4g6L-M.png

Pirate charges James but misses him.
Gorath chases and ends the fight with a thrust for 28.

i-D2mX29r-M.png

I love seeing gold on enemies we defeat.

i-DdZMsNV-M.png

Good stuff on these two.

i-W4C49ck-M.png

So we head towards where the chest was and about 70% of the way there we notice more enemies ahead.

i-qGzJQ37-M.png

And no luck with stealth.

i-txxQXP5-M.png

It's 5 enemies with 2 spellcasters among them!
One of the enemies charges James but misses.
James charges and misses the caster.

i-GPWCjdL-M.png

Gorath is attacked and missed. Another enemy gets into range with Owyn.
Owyn if forced to charge the other spell caster instead. At least he hits - 6 damage.

i-DG898jk-M.png

Gorath charges the same caster - but the caster parries.

i-svLBVcd-M.png

James chases the first caster but misses again.

i-fBbRXsh-M.png

2 Fighters gang up on Owyn but both miss.
Owyn lands a swing on the caster he's in melee range with. 19!

i-Cx3ZMkg-M.png

The enemy casters keep running around in order to get their spells off, but we keep chasing them. Gorath catches one - his thrust does 43! damage. I think the enemy casters have really low defense skills. Obviously that guy goes down.

i-C8v5cgJ-M.png

James is missed. He chases the other caster and hits - only 25 though.

i-Pd2n3Kb-M.png

Owyn is attacked twice - one enemy misses him with a swing - another hits with a thrust - 9 damage. He defends.
Gorath fails to finish the other caster due to a miss.

i-KVG2LDh-M.png

James does better by hitting for 25 again, but the caster is still up.

i-SnVnhkJ-M.png

Owyn gets attacked twice. Despite his block - the result is the same, one of the enemies gets a hit for 9 in. He defends again.
Gorath finishes the caster with a thrust for 43.

i-58pRXT8-M.png

Owyn is attacked twice. A swing gets through his guard and hits for 12.
While Gorath is trying to get in range an enemy catches up with him and hits him for 8.
James misses.

i-RcgdX8W-M.png

Owyn manages to fend off all the attacks this time. Defends again.
Gorath gets in range and hits a guy for 29.

i-QQC59gm-M.png

James lands a thrust for 19 on the same guy.

i-bgxTvJK-M.png

Owyn joins in on the party and finishes that guy with a swing for 14.

i-5mPNwxD-M.png

Gorath's attempt to attack another guy is parried. James is attacked with a swing and hit for 11.

i-PpbGCNb-M.png

James retaliates for 18.

i-qgHMJNP-M.png

Gorath gets in a swing through the block for 37.

i-c3XXj7c-M.png

Enemy misses James and James returns the favor.
Gorath finishes his enemy with a thrust for 28.

i-Gmn8dtw-M.png

Enemy misses James and James returns the favor once again.

i-hD2Mf6q-M.png

Gorath misses the last guy as well.

i-MCZgc8j-M.png

That guy once again misses James. Owyn is resting meanwhile.
James fails to hit that guy once again.

i-rgnCShQ-M.png

Gorath does not - a thrust for 28 is enough to finish this crazy fight. Looks like we've still got it despite the absence of our mustached superstar.

i-vLB9svj-M.png

There was only one skill increase.

i-D6DL8RV-M.png

Here comes the loot.

i-Wxvw48r-M.png

What is that bag?

i-Cr9v3ZL-M.png

Sounds like this is the item version of Despair thy Eyes.

i-cfMRCsS-M.png

Good thing they buy Lampreys in Krondor. Also - look at our gold count! It's LEET!

i-75z6psX-M.png

Shiny!

i-5XtDSBx-M.png

Huh, this was a caster body. Thought he'd have something special.

i-pfDVx5r-M.png

Right after the alcove to the chest there are more enemies.

i-3bvkDwW-M.png

We we manage to get in there without triggering the encounter.

i-5jzjNRF-M.png

Huh. James IS good for something.

i-vRGW84J-M.png

Would that archery was actually good.

i-VWg3bcQ-M.png

This is that lightning bolt spell. Since its guaranteed to hit I might actually use it.

i-HB8ZDF7-M.png

Let's hope we get on our way to Darkmoor in the next session.

There's an item called Interdictor's key right? Maybe that's what Nosey was about at the end.

So far yeah. Blindness is so cheap.

Later on I'll switch to Grief of 1000 nights and/or Fettlers(sp?) Of Rime. Maybe Evil Find.

Well and Skin of the Dragon when needed.

I never, as in never got very far with this game. As in nowhere near Krondor. Guess I sorta just gave up as I didn't quite figure out how to play it smart.
So it's good to see this lp! Keep it up. :bro:

Owyn has a good character arc. At first he annoyed me as this kid we had to drag along (even worse, I was an annoying kid like him at that age so it was destroying my escapism) but he gradually growed on me.

I used Skyfire a lot in the mid-game because it can be devastating against a single opponent. And crippling one enemy in the first turn can be critical in some of these fights. The trouble is you've got to learn who is especially vulnerable to it and who is immune.

Darkmoor awaits:

First we sneak past that group near the chest and get out of the sewers. Its not really our job to be clearing that stinky labyrinth of vagrants that choose to infest it. Besides - our packs were full of stuff already. Which we sell in town. Some of the stuff sells quite well.

i-RGmjsZX-M.png

Then we head on out of Krondor and take the South path at the crossroads. It immediately turns east.

i-Q7CwTnV-M.png

Very quickly after - we hit the end of this zone.

i-zwvmkbQ-M.png

And apparently get to a less forested terrain. It should be easier to find hidden chests now.

i-WzgFPg3-M.png

Huh, even the trees changed. And... is that buildings?

i-LFrgvxj-M.png

Oh my, it dumped us out all the way near Darkmoor.

i-SNzRscm-M.png

Well, lets check the buildings.

i-Q8xnTmH-M.png

What is this? A vampire waiting for us in there?

i-cCj7hBG-M.png

Rusalki is the Russian word for Mermaids. I guess we'll have to brave the potential vampire to find out more.

i-XZVR5c8-M.png

Next house is a bit bigger.

i-DVS4SX3-M.png

Ok, this lady has one of those disabilities where they can't understand social norms...

i-qZSFB2H-M.png

Which her husband somehow learned too late. I guess this explains why her house is bigger.

i-sz979DR-M.png

Back to smaller...

i-MGzcZfh-M.png

Ah, its a loot house.

i-cvbF4B2-M.png

Oh, this is nice. Those little crossbows sell for like 15 gold too.

i-qwFq8BW-M.png

Is this the Mercantile?

i-nSkj6JW-M.png

Yes, sounds like a general store.

i-VWBJkrT-M.png

Yup.

i-Fgscx79-M.png

Wait! That's a lot of books for a general store!

i-N3qpJqc-M.png

So... books in this game are like the training sessions. I believe this particular one increases Appraisal - which is hard to tell from this description.

i-mk55GKw-M.png

Think this one increases weaponsmithing and armorsmithing. Kinda expensive.

i-XgpVwzk-M.png

And this one will increase Defense! We'll be buying it. As a bonus it tells us where we can find a Temple of Dala. Its one of the temples that can bless items to +15% so this is good to know.

i-CHXHPxb-M.png

One more book, and its a jackpot.

i-fCP7ppd-M.png

While it sounds useless - the book increases EVERY skill. By the way - there was a side quest out of Yabon that would earn us a free copy. But we never went to Yabon...

i-vGMw4Vg-M.png

So we haggle the price down a bit and buy it.

i-zrmxxS5-M.png

We also haggle down the defense skill book.

i-5mWVJbC-M.png

By the way, haggling is variable. Like there are different success levels. This merchant was tough to haggle with so we were lucky to get this.

i-HKH3DDX-M.png

Each book has 100!!! uses. But it only has its full effect once. I hear they can sometimes increase more skill on repeated readings, but I've never tried it. Reading books takes a lot of in game time and we're usually on a mission that at least seems time critical.

i-Zwrw5Mf-M.png

Let's read the bird Jackpot.

i-rrhRGsm-M.png

Sounds like a very confused book.

i-P8HrQKx-M.png

But we can't argue with results. By the way - I decided to focus on Casting Accuracy instead of Defense as being able to hit with some of the chance to hit spells might be useful. The bonuses were +5% to all non focused skills and +8% to the focused skill.

i-4g9Zt6Q-M.png

Reading this book took us into the night. So lets check on the vampire lady.

i-DMV2Fvx-M.png

Ok, think our necks are safe. There are actually no vampires in Betrayal at Krondor. But:
There are actually quite a few in the strange sequel: Return to Krondor. The seemed out of place, I don't remember vampires ever appearing in the books.

i-RRXfRXN-M.png

Sounds like the Magic Touch of Death (or the goddess of death) is an antidote to Rusalki. I... don't remember such a spell so I'm not sure what she's talking about. My strategy with Rusalki and Shades is usually just to Skin of the Dragon everyone.

i-wkt9jwq-M.png

James is next to ready the book of birds.

i-CvNzbgx-M.png

Followed by Gorath.

i-gMgt9Ww-M.png

Now we read the other book.

i-VKdWV6b-M.png

I like how the game has helpful hints everywhere.

i-NR6L7j5-M.png

Seems like with Defense being in focus this book gives a bonus of only 6%.

i-5zjpxXG-M.png

It's still nice obviously.

i-RsCwLFs-M.png

We're going to keep these two books I think. There are some more personnel changes in the future and the new party members will welcome the stat boosts.

i-9Cw2Pf7-M.png

Next is a well.

i-9rcn5Pt-M.png

And its nothing special.

i-8wJQb68-M.png

This village is large, there are more houses.

i-LhJwLmt-M.png

But a lot of them are abandoned. A lot of places like this in the world nowadays.

i-2cZJkBK-M.png

What a strange combination of items.

i-jcd3cKt-M.png

A large house is next.

i-Cw2dPVB-M.png

So... this is Caroline, she's somewhat similar to her sister.

i-qdFJdW4-M.png

She sounds starved for attention. But we're not looking to settle down.

i-g2W7cbc-M.png

Is this an inn?

i-GCXnzL3-M.png

Nice. Half the town is abandoned but this place is packed!

i-rstpngR-M.png

And we get paid almost as well as in Krondor!

i-CMxJS4B-M.png

Most of the people here seem to be of the usual gossip variety, but I have not seen this one before.

i-q8DkTDC-M.png

Ah a tale of a wily man defeating both a giant brute and a spoiled wench.

i-V9hJhL8-M.png

This reminds me of a trip to Vegas where I witnessed some trashcan arm-wrestling. The two dudes were surrounded by a gaggle of onlookers. It seemed like one of those scenes where the dice hustlers get a dude - except it was arm wrestling - on a trashcan.

i-drbTdrN-M.png

Wow, and the dude made bank. Who hustled whom?

i-S5jWgvH-M.png

Yet another house.

i-m2ZzkVH-M.png

Did Elizabeth and Caroline scare half the town away?

i-8QgpzcP-M.png

James can easily pick peasant locks at this point, but I guess he won't always be with us.

i-x65jBH8-M.png

Last house!

i-rWQH5cC-M.png

Is populated by a raging asshole of a woman. I wonder what these strangers did to her.

Rusalki are much darker than mermaids. They're the tortured souls of girls who drowned in rivers or something and they try to lure people to their deaths. I dunno, there's people who are actually Russian here who I'm sure know this way better than I do.

In the game they are extremely dangerous opponents, especially in this chapter. I can't remember if there's a spell to counter them, but I'd just advise you to bug out if you run into opposition close to a river and try to find another way around it.

I dig the basic flamecast too. It's good against massed enemies, both for the AoE but also harder to miss when there's guys standing next to each other.

The road beckons:

As we get out of Darkmoor there's a bit of a forest on the left - I decide to fire off a cast of Eyes of Ishap. There appears to be 2 vessels in the corner to our north. Score!

i-PgKKsB3-M.png

And apparently they're guarded by a trap.

i-Mnp7HN2-M.png

This looks complicated...

i-9DCH53n-M.png

We take a moment to 'rest' up Owyn's hp. Eyes of Ishap are expensive at 10 hp per cast.

i-dmTKjWq-M.png

And then all we seem to need to do is push the diamond forward once.

i-cHknsJ6-M.png

And go around it.

i-vw9rzSd-M.png

There's our prize.

i-qvkjzm2-M.png

The one in the back is a bit too easy.

i-SZ3dPBG-M.png

They could have made it harder by leaving the club out of it.

i-tmXx4Jg-M.png

That's a lot of Strength potions. Maybe I'll start giving them to James before fights so that he can at least hit as hard as Gorath when he does hit.

i-F4Zgqwk-M.png

This one took me a little bit. So I'll let those that want to solve it give it a try. The combos are:

SOSK
MRLS
ATOT
DIDE

i-6p9Ltx5-M.png

Or if you want to see the solution look here:

i-mXsXTKW-M.png

Another set of decent armor. But we're all good on those.

i-xGVdv5s-M.png

A little further up the road we notice a temple.

i-FXbP57Q-M.png

Ruthia is the Goddess of Luck.

i-ZcmgLmw-M.png

Yeah, this is definitely worth the money if we really have to go that far. Hell, maybe we will at some point - remember that trapped chest in the Dwarven Caverns? Doubt it will be worth taking two teleports though.

i-3Jwcj4b-M.png

We try to talk to the head priestess - but this is probably the most realistic outcome out of all the temples so far.

i-fSwRWwT-M.png

While we're here. Lets see how much it costs to bless our higher tier weapon.

i-Nwbdt4T-M.png

And armor? Ouch, even more expensive.

i-5PdmDxv-M.png

When we step out its dark. Damned priestess made us waste half a day.

i-8j3gG3s-M.png

We rest up till morning and move on. But suddenly!

i-qKbS2ST-M.png

Whoa, that's a lot of them! I don't know how I didn't see them, I was searching for loot off the path, maybe if I was on the road I would have. Or maybe this was an ambush.
Anyway the fight starts with Gorath getting hit for 12 and James getting hit for 13. I will not be reporting enemy misses as they are too numerous.
James misses.

i-sK4pFBq-M.png

Owyn misses too.

i-fK2NpqW-M.png

Gorath does not - lands a swing for 39.

i-pWwLrR5-M.png

Enemies attack several times. Gorath gets hit for 15.
James goes after the one Gorath injured. Lands a hit for 20!

i-MN87Cm6-M.png

Owyn makes the fight a little easier with a swing for 14. That guy is down.

i-LczJJvP-M.png

Gorath tries another swing but its parried.

i-bT5bRgB-M.png

Among the attacks - a swing lands on Gorath for 19.
James fails to land a thrust.

i-bT5bRgB-M.png

Owyn lands a swing though - 13.

i-ZKZZJbF-M.png

Gorath lands a swing for 39 on the same guy.

i-kFVMSfS-M.png

But another hit on Gorath comes in for 19. That enemy is either really strong or has a better weapon.
James fails to make a hit again.

i-bG7pJth-M.png

James gets hit right back - only for 9 though.
Owyn is once again the finisher with a swing for 15.

i-wCmLdwD-M.png

Gorath isn't that much into his health yet. Goes for a thrust on the dude that keeps hitting him so hard. Lands for 27.

i-dHtgx4J-M.png

James finally hits. 18. I miss Locky...

i-mqsvQnw-M.png

Owyn can't get a thrust on the damaging enemy.

i-P7vbLTH-M.png

Gorath can - another thrust for 27.

i-HxBq9Z7-M.png

James charges him too, but can't hit. Gets hit instead for 10 for his trouble.

i-zQCwKT6-M.png

Owyn's swing is no good.

i-2rTNNDC-M.png

Gorath's thrust finishes the big bad with a hit for 29.

i-7BGwqGQ-M.png

James misses.

i-LrnM9GJ-M.png

Owyn's swing is blocked.

i-8Hq8XDz-M.png

And so is Gorath's.
And so is James' thrust.

i-CCQ2XJ8-M.png

Owyn's swing just plain misses.

i-pScRNnB-M.png

Gorath gets a thrust in for 26 however.

i-8QTNP4r-M.png

James still can't get a hit.

i-s4vzJN9-M.png

Owyn is not having much luck with his thrusts either.

i-BkH6WgM-M.png

Gorath lands a good swing for 34.

i-9CVFMTL-M.png

James finally hits - 18.

i-GZxLkhD-M.png

Continuing the theme - Owyn finishes an enemy with a swing for 13. Owyn the shaolin monk.

i-6524tQc-M.png

Gorath finishes the fight with a thrust for 27.

i-QFXZzZx-M.png

Owyn's martial skills on display.

i-23ZgVDX-M.png

Gorath taking all those hits also taught him something. His actual value is higher though, his a bit under max hp at the moment.

i-M3CdXCZ-M.png

How are we supposed to dig out individual corpses from THAT?

i-3KcQBqN-M.png

Will have to manage...

i-pTZRBdP-M.png

Nice crossbow, and what is this?

i-nDF2jzB-M.png

Tuning Fork can be used to make Trolls flee. We'll be meeting Trolls later on in the game, they are really strong and have a lot of hp.

i-b6GcKWg-M.png

This must be the guy that was hitting Gorath so hard, what is that sword?

i-BLjZFcr-M.png

I'm not sure why this hastly made weapon is better than the standard broadswords we started the game with.

i-kzcRMvH-M.png

Whoa! Gorath is getting this, its made for an elf.

i-shgdBTB-M.png

Here's the 2 hander for comparison. Straight up damage upgrade to both attack types and Gorath should be slightly better at hitting with this thing due to racial stuff.

i-BTWzwLd-M.png

This guy is less exciting.

i-mjgxk5c-M.png

Yessss!

i-KZ94bjd-M.png

It clears up poison which gets a bit more common and we already saw how painful it was to heal without the antidote.

i-pP8hV6z-M.png

i-qR7X82q-M.png

We find a cemetery.

i-wkL7Hsh-M.png

I get the bright idea that Eyes of Ishap might be a work around for finding which graves are item caches. But either the spell does not work on graves or there are no such graves here.

i-KCcxR8Q-M.png

Right behind is the sign for Malac's Cross.

i-QHNpT34-M.png

Our progress has been swift, we'll check out Malac's Cross next.

What's in Malac's Cross?

Only one way to find out!

i-6tQ9vP4-M.png

Looks like a cozy place. What's in that barrel?

i-QS9XdF2-M.png

Hmmm, we're almost full on rope, so we only get 3 of these to fill out a single stack of 20.

i-pDm58rN-M.png

Time to sell our stuff and see what they've got.

i-zkj56vN-M.png

Yay! They'll buy our swords and armor.

i-Xtzv267-M.png

Seems identical to the Krondor shop.

i-3LH2kqF-M.png

Actually the selection is slightly poorer.

i-Hstgg6c-M.png

Yeah, nothing crazy here. The pricing on some of the stuff is insane. 4 charges for 260 gold?

i-rLs3n96-M.png

After we're done selling we decide to check this place out.

i-chBHmbf-M.png

Hmmm, we run into a raging ass. Seems like there's some kind of lecture that requires a ticket to get in and apparently this is not the place to buy it.

i-GWssFv3-M.png

Perhaps someone is selling it at the Inn?

i-HSZXWmv-M.png

And who might this be?

i-rGmrVbt-M.png

Ivan huh?

i-qq69Qtq-M.png

Probably not the one you use to light candles.

i-bR94zL5-M.png

Fischer huh? At least I can't recognize Jamie Tiller as some kind of play on a famous chess player. Anyway - the Queen's Gambit vibes are strong with this conversation.

i-fNDGX66-M.png

Some kind of opening theory I guess. One guy tries to sacrifice a pawn - the other one ignores it and tries to sacrifice a knight.

i-C59MXW8-M.png

Apparently James know the opening theory on this one.

i-HSNnxJp-M.png

Its not so easy to impress a Russian at chess.

i-ssdMxRm-M.png

Apparently James can play blindfolded. Guess he's at least a 1800 rated player.

i-3mMMNhK-M.png

I guess Ivan sees a lot of good chess players around here - so he doesn't get too excited.

i-J2xrPNm-M.png

That's a lot of topics...

i-NqSRFG8-M.png

Chances should be pretty good...

i-tB9FBmM-M.png

Looks like Ivan knows guys like us don't sit around in the city for long.

i-crS246c-M.png

I wonder if we still have to pretend we're heading in some other town than we're heading.

i-gSQpCTX-M.png

That sounds like 50% of the cost in some other places.

i-VH3pQC7-M.png

James agrees with the assessment.

i-dBSWwGR-M.png

Its nice to hear the man does not discriminate in the staff he hires. Sometimes you look at an ethnic business owner and the next thing you know - the business is full of employees of the same ethnicity.

i-CkFN5Mj-M.png

Yes, that's a good price. I even feel bad about haggling at this point so we buy a seven pack at default price.

i-LTRnKz7-M.png

Ok, next topic.

i-zD3rG9Z-M.png

James is being vague as to the type of reputation.

i-HKRPH6x-M.png

Sounds like they could make a spinoff TV series about the place.

i-r9xbqmc-M.png

James is only interested in the cream that rises to the top.

i-jXV5kFP-M.png

A temple that teaches tactics? Ishap isn't really a war god...

i-jZ9QfX5-M.png

This is a strange topic to touch on.

i-2VwjLSH-M.png

Did James forget something here?

i-LXcM3hF-M.png

One does wonder.

i-gvs9vF6-M.png

Huh? Are we pawnshop peddlers now?

i-2xnzDLr-M.png

Oh no. The first instance of a pay to play loot crate.

i-3Nw6Lgg-M.png

We say no for now. Codex will vote on it.

i-8rzcDFf-M.png

Heh, now that Ivan knows James has some chess skills and is proud of them - here come the kicks to the ego.

i-6x2qV4H-M.png

Perhaps this is his goal.

i-4dsbnBb-M.png

The game of kings is fun - but aren't we supposed to be saving the kingdom?

i-nkDTQrL-M.png

A few moves from a book does not generally make much difference. Well - guess opening theory wasn't that much of a thing so maybe some opening traps could be difficult to deal with.

i-RXjkw85-M.png

Hmmm, its not normally played for stakes.

i-tR8f7vL-M.png

Holy! That escalated quickly.

i-4pTMRV6-M.png

We don't even have an Emerald to bet. Anyway - the way this works is - we lose UNLESS. We learn 2 pieces of chess knowledge from different sides of the map.

i-MjscH7x-M.png

This guy really turns from a nice guy to a douche as soon as chess egos get involved.

i-s6qXsG2-M.png

En what?

i-6gpHhCL-M.png

Did that even get mentioned at some point? Anyway - en passant is a very well known rule nowadays.

i-SLQgvh5-M.png

A single pawn often decides the game at high level.

i-PXr7cbB-M.png

As legal as it gets buddy.

i-hXcCH3C-M.png

Man, this guy has a problem with the bets on chess games.

i-X7wwFPR-M.png

Think by 'move' he means combination.

i-QV5G98c-M.png

Chess... chess and more chess.

i-G7F7CRq-M.png

There are quite a few gambits in chess. About half of them are dubious or worse. But a lot are played at high level. The point is usually to sacrifice a pawn or two get a lead in development and/or open up lines of attack.

i-FzG6N94-M.png

Generally the gambits are well defined parts of opening theory - so not sure how one could try to employ it in the wrong place without messing up the move order of the opening.

i-Xs4wPMG-M.png

Life must have been tough before chess websites. Now you can just hop on and see all the moves grandmasters make in given positions and how often the lead to each result type.

i-gWfWZC8-M.png

Smart man.

i-q2hDDnX-M.png

We ask about advice, apparently I lost the screenshot.

i-655FzMS-M.png

It is a good place to own a pub.

i-xzHBR6f-M.png

Good practical question.

i-CzWhNTF-M.png

Sounds like Lord Lyton has become a Robber Barron.

i-NF8JqV3-M.png

Sounds like we might have to find a similar way.

i-3FLZdBP-M.png

OK, we're out of topics.

i-wzb4K3S-M.png

What a life! Chess for diamonds and emeralds. Ale. Dishes.

i-NmmfqmD-M.png

Yeah, wouldn't want to interrupt your dishwashing.

i-npjfBmm-M.png

Let's talk to the old lady with the stick.

i-ZCTW4vm-M.png

Who's Lysle?

i-9xB6CBS-M.png

Sounds like we're not really being incognito.

i-97Khsbd-M.png

Sounds like a good way to get locked away - not get bunch of gold...

i-6fwx4WR-M.png

So... dementia? Blindness?

i-MN3dQwR-M.png

Oh Snap!

i-rPDkfSt-M.png

Dark elves are doing something at Sethanon?

i-4svP7XX-M.png

Yeah, this could be useful information.

i-DCNNJpt-M.png

I don't think faerie magic gets used in the middle of a crowded pub...

i-ngr2FBw-M.png

Hmmmm. James used to be just a thief in the sewers. Those often don't know their parents.

i-5wqGJpN-M.png

Didn't she say she was this Lysle's grandma?

i-Mrn2fTs-M.png

This seems like too much information to give out...

i-vtR43m3-M.png

Yes. Way too much information.

i-BKNVk5d-M.png

Well, at least this is getting to a better cause than all the drinks for the big nosed guy.

i-RQ7jDZD-M.png

I'm a bit more curious about this than the IRS quest out of Krondor.

i-6vCT4Xn-M.png

Lyton is the next stop on our path.

i-XNK6pX8-M.png

Well, that will be a interesting lead to follow.

i-kmxvdv8-M.png

We talk to Ivan again and notice a new topic.

i-j4vXcBj-M.png

Well, you did just buzz his ear off about chess a short time ago...

i-nSZnrB8-M.png

Apparently James' chess fame does not precede him.

i-qmDzJ8W-M.png

Seems like there was a smoother way to ask that question.

i-JdpPtjg-M.png

Yay, we get a last name.

i-hLL5prx-M.png

Too bad 23andMe are not a thing in this world. My wife recently found an unknown cousin. Her uncle played around before he got married...

i-gxTfMfJ-M.png

Darkmoor? But the old lady said Lyton. I wonder who's right?

i-4t6K7Pr-M.png

Hmmm, both warning us that Lysle has people looking for him.

i-JwbK7Nq-M.png

Heh. I can't say I'm that similar with my sibling.

i-5qHf3Qr-M.png

Anyway - before we forget - lets earn some more gold via our bard side gig.

i-j3KvgT4-M.png

And check out the Temple.

i-TXfNwz5-M.png

Ishap is kinda like Ao.

i-JzqdWzb-M.png

Strange to see two teleporting temples so close.

i-qmWKp7D-M.png

Ok, so lets see if the head priest will talk to us.

i-Wk6RBdt-M.png

Its strange how the temples look Classical Greek but the monks look medieval.

i-NsnksQk-M.png

That's a pretty good excuse.

i-DtLbRNP-M.png

Seems like Graves can recognize a magician when he sees one.

i-gCsPhtC-M.png

I can see his father's point. I guess it depends if Owyn's the heir or not. If he is - why is he running around the countryside?

i-8HxJsnR-M.png

Its fun how the game's convos are all connected. We'll be meeting Patrus later.

i-8CKPkb4-M.png

That seems like a flimsy sales pitch.

i-C7xKgMf-M.png

This is true.

i-kR5NBXW-M.png

How do other temples make do without being a for profit educational institution?

i-WSkZzBb-M.png

I guess I'd hate having to go back to school at this point myself.

i-722tkpn-M.png

The salesman switches tactics. That name drop...

i-ZKSrVHk-M.png

Gets James immediately.

i-bcrggbX-M.png

This does actually sound like a good school.

i-Jg8jPbs-M.png

20 gold is nothing at this point.

i-sCbTWDz-M.png

Ah, perhaps that place with the ass demanding tickets?

i-3HJgHb3-M.png

That's a yes.

i-66cgfs6-M.png

Let's go see this lecture.

i-tzxrPhb-M.png

Oh, yes. Before that - I happen to know this temple does level 3 blessings and happens to have the best price for them too. We just got a very good sword that should last us a while. Lets bless it!

i-NRbLpKD-M.png

Wow, that's quite affordable.

i-58ZTHDJ-M.png

Sounds like the process is involved...

i-KsrHzCh-M.png

The cross icons are different depending on the level of enchantment.

i-RCJhm6g-M.png

Nice!

i-tBfc9fH-M.png

We head to the lecture.

i-BKKfZJh-M.png

Good writing. Pulling characters from the books in left and right.

i-3xsXCNK-M.png

Guess Arutha's plans did not reach King Lyam's court in time to be shared with Guy.

i-RRpXmtK-M.png

Hmmm, for some reason I thought the detachment of soldiers was recently dispatched there. Apparently they're there for a few years now.

i-SctqGMq-M.png

Those two bodyguards suggest that King's advisor is not perfectly safe within the Kingdom's borders.

i-NmWBf8F-M.png

The effects of the lecture.

i-XMQV6q2-M.png

i-c9R4tQx-M.png

i-GCc5Rx2-M.png

So... there's Lyton.

i-NgXwkRr-M.png

A few votes are needed:

A. Buy the lost and found from Ivan.
B. Do not gamble on that stuff.

A. Head to Lyton to look for James's lookalike and/or continue with the story.
B. Make a run to Darkmoor first to check for him there.
