I asked about why such trailers are made, not what ads do.

A trailer is supposed to show your game. A "non-showing-the-game trailer" which is what a "cinematic trailer" means, is an oxymoron.

"In-engine" should just be a really good gameplay video which showcases the game's system, combat, stats, graphics, things like that.

An FMV cutscene is distinct from an in-engine cutscene, but either can be cinematic.

This is much more ambitious than the KCD2 trailer though. You can tell it was very competent people who directed it
