To throw a more recent game out there for consideration, the best recent Square-Enix game that I have played is Dungeon Encounters [2021], a sort of minimalist take on the dungeon crawler genre which is brutal at times but has a completely fresh take on traditional JRPG combat which actually makes it fun. Some of the character and enemy designs are a bit silly [one verges on blatant copyright] but to be honest the game is totally focused on strategy and dungeon bungee-jumping that I don't even notice them - it is not like they talk or do anything other than serve as units of your party. If you like fast paced turn based dungeon crawlers then you might like this.

Xenogears is one of the titles renowned by the community I have in my duckstation emu but I've always been scared off playing it because of the long (and many) unskippable cut scenes. But I suppose if the story is decent and compelling enough, that shouldn't be a problem.

The gameplay of Xenogears is unfortunately an afterthought and a waste of time. It also looks like shit the majority of the time, which is unusual for Squaresoft back then. Even Chrono Shitter on the SNES looks better. Some nice music here and there though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCdT5DTAnZU

Chrono

The only Japaneseru RPG that's not full of anime fur faggotry (apart from maybe the frog).
Whilst Phantasy Star was giving players a wholesome, straight laced, CRPG/dungeon crawling influenced JRPG, Chrono Trigger was dropping gay shit like this on us...

I have WotS4. Was surprised it was only 30 FPS (mods for 60 FPS would break physics). However, I'm currently playing Infamous 2 in RPCS3 and it dips and soars between 20-40 FPS but it's such a fun game I don't give a shit, and I'm a total 120 Hz/120 FPS whore with my LG OLED TV. A steady 30 FPS would be a dream in Infamous 2

This is the answer. And be sure to play the original Strange journey, the remake makes the game incredibly easy and adds a lot of weeb cringe that was not in the original at all.

Final Fantasy I only played 4,5,6. 5 was the best imo. Most fun gameplay with minimal cringe and cool characters. 4 has cool characters but is very boring and the story is generic and drags on with some hints of weeb melodrama. 6 is already way too anime imo.

WotS4 is a good game, even if it has a number of flaws. It's often weird, but in the silly comedic way rather than the "uguu oniichain" way. It also has a ton of C&C, with most story paths being relatively short and a heavy focus on replaying the game. Some of the things you do affect future playthroughs, like if the school is operating when a playthrough ends you'll be able to understand the English-speaking characters on future playthroughs. Until you do the story paths where you chase off or kill the teacher and it closes again.

It's been many moons since I played TC, but wasn't he a joke villain that got angry when others pointed out that he's a guy despite pretending to be a girl? The character's meant to mock crossdressing, so it's ironic that these people had to poison their wiki by pretending that he's actually an example of their ideology.

I only played the Strange Journey remake. How does it make the game easier other than the ability to save anywhere? You can just not use if you want more challenge and only save in towns or at terminals, which is how I played it. I think the addition of the huge megadungeon and the new final boss which is more difficult and complex than everything else in the game other than maybe Meme Aleph makes it worth it.

The ability to save anywhere is a big deal. And also commander skillls and the app system rework. You can watch this video its pretty good:

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Check out Seraphic Blue. Behind the exterior appearance of the shitty rpgmaker engine stands a game with old school difficulty. Bosses take actual strategy and gear changes to defeat, the game doesn't reward grinding, and like Wizardry you can run into enemies on the encounter table which will challenge you each new area. The equipment is super interesting as far as JRPGs go. You have a weapon and armor slot, but then you have sphere slots. Spheres have different categories like abilities, invest, tactical, and guard. Ability spheres give the equipped character new options in battle like magic spells, healing, and more. Guard spheres usually give you more defense, and invest spheres give you resistances or damage increases (things like reducing fire damage or increasing fire damage). This system is great because you will have to change your character's build throughout the entire game. There's also a system to cut down on having to stock 100s of hp pots called supply. You get a pool of hp and mp that you can use between fights to full heal with. This creates a fun resource management mechanic as you work through dungeons because you have to conserve your supply.

Warning: The game is 50+ hours, and it contains long story segments. The gameplay far and away stands up, but the story can be seen as edgy. Luckily this has the effect that you won't be playing as some tiny girl character or high school weeb with "waifus". The plot involves war, suicide, nihilism, and other dark topics. The main character is a "devil sweeper" which is just a demon bounty hunter. Early in the game he reveals he likes to do it because he is tired of living and enjoys the killing. Since devil sweeping is seen as honorable it allows him to use these demons as an outlet for past trauma. The plot develops from there, but that's the type of stuff you will run into. The best part is the game is completely free.

Well as I said, you can just not save the game outside the base or terminal on your own. It's a self-imposed restriction but if it makes the game more fun for you, why not? And I still think the new dungeon and true final boss make it worth it unless you really really want that little bit of extra difficulty that comes from not having access to buffs like "no game overs if your main dies".

The only good JRPG I can think of where you can play as someone who does not look like a pretty boy and more like a chiseled Western face is Suikoden 3, if you pick Geddoe as the protagonist.

C3MVsYl.jpeg

If that's the most chiseled you can be in it, you might just as well play as a girl.

Has any Final Fantasy ever even featured a loli character in any capacity? That's such a weird projection onto a franchise famous for women with tits bigger than their heads.
The SFC trilogy had Rydia (pre-ship), Porom, Krile, and Relm. Past that? Spinoffs only as far as I know. Maybe Refia from the III remake: She was supposed to have been a very young child 10 years prior to the game, but the non-chibi art for the game and her spinoff appearances all have boobs.

So many people use threads like this to recomend their personal ultra-niche games. The point is to offer games that are accessible and ease players into the genre. No one is going to be turned into a JRPG fan by fucking Dark Spire.

CVV just play Final Fantasy 7 like everyone else, for fuck's sake.
Correct. I would recommend SRPGs (tactical actually, but Nips and their naming schemes) instead of the classical JRPG stuff. So Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle and Front Mission series.
If he really wants the above, Final Fantasy 6 (if he doesn't mind the 16bit pixel art) and Final Fantasy 7 (if he doesn't mind early 3D). Both of them have a lot of sily moments and melodrama expected from anime medium in general, but I would say they are appropriate and limited enough to be called charming instead of pure cringe.

Shadow Hearts Covenant I lasted about 4 hours of excruciating pain, from total simping on women (getting on their knees and praying to god simply because a pretty girl changed her outfit and looked a little more pretty), to two gay frenchmen with grotesque character design and off-putting flamboyancy all in your face, to anime theatrics I have trouble even describing just how lame it is, but think Dragon Ball Z type cringe and dial it up to over one thousand, to moody emo weirdo "cool" dude cringelord main character.
Since we are talking about the cringe, I have to concur. I was always interested in giving Shadow Hears (the first one, not the Covenent sequel) a chance - more due to its interesting setting and to a lesser degree due to its cult status among JRPG fans. I might force myself through it eventually, but only the first hour had too much of the cringe simping and thirst to take the story too seriuously.

Someone who hates jRPGs might, FF7 is the most milquetoast recommendation, if he thought he hated jRPGs before, he certainly will know for sure after playing FF7
