IO Interactive reports record-breaking year driven by Hitman 3
Studio generated $78 million in profit, a 136% increase on the previous year

Hitman developer IO Interactive has released its annual report for 2020/21, reporting record-breaking profits during the last fiscal year.

For the year ending March 31 2021, the company reported revenues of DKK 502 million ($78 million), a 136% increase on the DKK 212.8 million ($33 million) made the year prior.

As part of that, the studio made a profit of DKK 270.6 million ($42 million), compared to a profit of DKK 11.5 million ($1.8 million) during the same period in 2020.

The uptick in profit was largely driven by the release of Hitman 3 in January 2021, which earned 300% of the game's initial sales budget-- something the studio told GamesIndustry.biz earlier this year.

IO currently has several projects in development, including live content to be added to Hitman 3, and Project 007, a new James Bond game. The studio also has one other unannounced title in the works.

Looking ahead, IO expects revenues for FY2022 to land somewhere between DKK 200 million ($31 million) and DKK 250 million ($38 million).

Earlier this week, the game of the year release of the Hitman, released in 2016, was removed from online marketplace GOG due to online requirements.

- The first self-published Hitman game. No revenue split to publishers. (And probably with much less marketing spend.)
- Actually sold fine too, as suggested by topping console sales charts at release.

It also came out in January which had no other notable AAA releases. Meanwhile, 2016 had a loathed episodic launch and 2 got sandwiched between stuffs like RDR2, Fallout 76, and Battlefield 5.

If their 007 game features a well-written hot chick as the main character - something I think they are capable of achieving - they will still be on a steady course. But they dried the Hitman vein, this growth is artificial.

I tried Hitman 3, and the story is SO BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

Why would Hitman want to kill ICA? Why would ICA wanted to endanger itself by cooperating with main villain? Why would HITMAN care? Why is Olivia in game at all? And why is Olivia black? Why is in Hitman that man, who definitely wasn't needed to help him in his missions?

Playing Hitman for the story is like watching porn for the plot.
Some scenes were filmed aboard the HMS Bounty, at The Pier in St. Petersburg, Florida. The city of St. Petersburg, which owns The Pier, did not realize that the film was porn; the producers represented the film as a PG-13-level comedy for television.
Nice movie, decently looking actors. Total rip of Pirates from the Caribbean.

But... This reminds me you can't shoot through weak walls in Hitman 3, and killing is so primitive. Stuff is locked behind online only play, and in fact base game could be released as free to play without any ill effect. You can clean map easily with ICA silenced, and nobody notices anything. Perhaps some dead bodies, but they would be shot soon, so who cares...

Also, can someone explain me how the long range non lethal attack with crowbar works?

The World of Assassination trilogy has reached the phenomenal milestone of 50 million players and HITMAN 3 is now the most successful Hitman game of all time.

HITMAN 3 – Year 2 will start on 20 January 2022, with post-launch support confirmed for another 12 months. New maps, storylines, modes and ways to play are all lined up for 2022, which is set to be another exciting year.

Ray Tracing

Together with our partners at Intel, we’re committed to bringing the best possible performance and optimization to our PC players. HITMAN 3 has already been enhanced on PC with support for 8+ core CPUs and Variable Rate Shading. In 2022, HITMAN 3 will also support Ray Tracing on PC.

PC VR
HITMAN 3 launched with support for PS VR and we’re happy to bring HITMAN VR to PC in January 2022. Full technical details, including the platforms that we’re supporting will be revealed before Year 2 starts on 20 January 2022.

Elusive Target Arcade
A new way to play Elusive Targets arrives in HITMAN 3 in a brand new game mode that we’re calling Elusive Target Arcade. Prepare to take on the ultimate Elusive Target challenge in a change to the established formula in this fan-favourite game mode. All Elusive Target Arcade content will be a permanent addition to the game. Full details on how this game mode works will be shared in early January 2022.

Hopefully it'll be something good now that they've got all three installments to work with. And I could've sworn they said somewhere that their post-launch support wasn't going to include substantially new content.

Finally played this. Pretty lackluster on the whole.

It's almost unbelievable how much the series has declined since the original Hitman 2.

You can STILL eliminate a target, leave a giant pool of blood on the floor, and no one notices, so long as you drag the body outside of patrol routes. You don't even have to hide them in a closet. There's no blood trails STILL after 3 iterations of this game. And if you do hide them, they can STILL never be found.

I guess it could have been worse though.
When I saw the black hacker girl, I assumed they were about to replace another redhead with a black and kill off Diana.
There were a few cool moments, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price.
No Steam release date, wtf?! I've been waiting to play the entire trilogy in Hitman 3's engine.
It was supposed to be earlier this year, I thought, but maybe Epic just keeps paying them off idk.

I have all the other games on Steam too, but there's a way to import your progress to Epic so you can access all your Steam purchases in-game. Wait for a sale.

It takes 30 seconds just to launch, it's sluggish af, it's unsightly and lacks features that we had 15 years ago on Steam. And I have both H1 and 2 on Steam already, with all their respective content. If they release it on Steam in January, I'm buying. If not, they can go to hell.

It's asinine that we have to wait so long just to buy a game. For example, I literally had to wait for 3 years for Tetris Effect to come to Steam, through 3 different exclusivity periods (first Sony for the PS4, then Epic, then Microsoft for Xbox). Cunts, the lot of them.

Based. I kind of wish I had waited too tbh, but I was sort of in a state that I wanted a distraction from real life. I got weak and caved to the sale.

Well, it's basically the same concepts as console exclusives, yeah. That's why I held off so long myself. I don't want to encourage those practices on the PC of all places.

We've lost enough just supporting Steam and their always online DRM.
