Is it woke?
You mean "Ye Old Entertainment"? No I would not say so, especially after I watched his SoD review. He falls under mild entertainment and does not go too deep into the mechanics or something, but atleast he keeps his reviews under 30 minutes.

What's going on with this trend of 'tubers making 3+ hours long video reviews (oh I'm sorry "critiques/analysis". That implies it's more high brow)? Gervais, Anderson etc, all make long ass fucking videos with little to no substance. Are they autistic or do they just like the sound of their own voice? And what about the audience? Do they watch it because it makes them feel smart. "Look! This guy can talk about a dead series like resident evil for 7 hours, that means he's like super smart, no? Maybe if I watch his videos, some of that inteligence will rub off on me"
I watched gervais' God of War review and couldn't stand it for the embarrassing gameplay footage (No doubt playing on easy, all these storyfags do). Then he said the combat in the nuGod of war is an improvement and same for the story. Kill me.
Same for Anderson. The guy has nothing to say. 80% of his videos are just him recapping the storyline.
I thought these two are the worst, than I found a video of some retard's 8hrs long video talking about the lore in Moronwind. Lorefags might be worse than storyfags.

It's called "flexing my useless college degree". Also, trend itself might just be a response to ANGRY GAME REVIEWER fad of yesteryear. Those were at least short and didn't pretend to be theses on the subject.

I think there's actually an audience for long form video game reviews/criticism. You throw it on in the background while playing Battlefield or whatever. Of course that doesn't mean midwits like Noah Caldwell-Gervais have anything interesting to say to even justify one hour of my time.

It has been a fad for years old man.
Gervais, Anderson etc, all make long ass fucking videos with little to no substance
They always made long ass videos with no substance.
Are they autistic or do they just like the sound of their own voice?
If you want to talk about something more deeply then 5 minutes means jack shit.Multiple hour long videos are shit but a single hour video talking about every facet of a rpg game is preferable to a quick nothing burger.
Most youtuber's fail to bring their points so they have to spend hours just getting to the point.
And what about the audience? Do they watch it because it makes them feel smart
They watch it because most fans already donated money to their patreon,so why not.
Other people just start the video and listen to it in the background while doing other things.

Severe mental illness. Mr. Caption made this kind of content and then had a breakdown followed by no less than three channel deletions after some people made fun of his "analysis" of Nier Automata. Joseph Anderson is such a sperg that even Silent Hill 2 proved too complex for him. This video's already been posted in the thread, but is funny enough to be worth repeating:

The guy's so dense that light bends around him. Errant Signal is a spree shooter in the making, criticizing Far Cry 5 for fictionalizing its antagonists when essentially what he wanted was to gun down midwestern Trump voters. Hbomberguy is probably the most tolerable of this breed since he's just British and gay (a redundancy, I know).

Because short videos don't make as much money.

I've uploaded a few gameplay montages. I try to keep them short because people usually stop watching after the first few minutes anyway.

Even I make fun of SH2chads sometimes but this is hilarious. One of the big reasons SH2 is so popular is because the basics (Maria etc.) are so easy to grasp at face value, and then people can just run wild from there. Also the double-standard with SOMA is spot-on.

I like watching these long videos about games i like, though of course they have to be good videos (in terms of what they say, i do not mind production quality much). I just watch them whenever i feel like doing nothing else and want to relax. If they are too long, i do not watch them in their entirety but instead make a temporary bookmark for the point where i stopped and continue at some other time.

The only long Morrowind video i liked so far was one by Patrician (who in general has very good videos IMO, though all of them with the exception of the Morrowind one are less than 1h long). It wasn't only about lore but also about the game's mechanics and one of the better researched videos. He's working on one for Oblivion since then but i guess it'll take a while.

only good one of the long-form game essay guys is MatthewMattosis.

the. only. one.

And that's largely because he works in video game design, i think as a teacher or something (he mentions it briefly in a 7 hour demon's souls video when he's breaking down how cameras in video games work).

The BG one is actually very well made. It includes footage from the og release, which says a lot by itself. Well researched and technical. Small channel and few videos so far, but has potential.

Neat video, one thing that he brings up and i agree with is how you often hear the enemies long before you encounter them. This is interesting in SS2 because the enemies actually spawn around you but in many later games games with spawning enemies the game doesn't really rely on sound much.

Also neat shootout (or well, eyeout) to RatTower's Monomyth at the end.
