Blobert is totally oldschool and knows his ways around RPG's.

And I'm not sure I agree with the Goldbox games being accessable. I've enjoyed plenty of classic RPGs, and just never liked the look and feel of them, even back when they were almost current. The font bothered me to no end.

hmmm, controls are not cumbersome, graphics are old but they work, and the newer ones were even VGA, and it's older than some sugestions made above, like witcher and oblivion. And it's easy to make them work on new computers.

Also, they were made on the transition from the old-looks to modern-looks.

The only thing I felt bad about these games was the copy protection, in which the game would have you read some passages that were on the manual. It would take you out of the game to continue playing it.

I vote again for Ultima VII. If you can get it running, it IS quite a bit more accessible than most RPGs the Codex considers.
In what way? I ask because I've never played it and am considering it.

I don't see how it is an inaccessible game. Play it now, it's a brilliant game!

I don't fear that it's inaccessible, I fear the opposite :). How does it complare in gameplay to Fallout?

?

Well... not favorably unfortunately. It is not a game you play for combat mechanics, but for the world/adventure/exploration/story/feeling. It is well worth a playthrough of the black gate and the serpent isle tho. Just give it a try.

I played Fallout 2 years ago and didn't get around to playing the first game until a week ago; so far I'd say Fallout 2 owns in every respect, even (or especially) with the occasional breaking of the fourth wall which Bethesda was too dumb to recognize as being funny.

How many of you guys were even around before the Atari 2600 hit in 1977, let alone were old enough to play RPGs on your PC and turn your nose up at the "console generation"?

I started playing my games on a cassette tape on a TRS-80, not that shitty 2600 stuff. I've paid my dues and DO in fact turn up my nose to the shit that's shoveled out today and called a "next gen" RPG.

Sad admission to make. I started my gaming on the Atari:-(. I just can't....wash.....the...stench...from...my...hands....

Actually those were good times - it wasn't like PC kicked ass in those days. Most of my early gaming was still the Apple IIe and Commodore 64, a few years after the Atari incident.

Several more hours into Fallout 2, I can safely admit to all that I can be converted. I've kept my exploits logged on the blog referenced at the start of the thread, and am really getting hooked. I'm now very interested to see what game I get assigned next.

If you manage to finish Fallout 2 and enjoy it like you say, I have a nagging feeling you are going to want more. I suggest Fallout for your next game.

Otherwise, Planescape: Torment. Beware though, it is very unconventional, focusing on dialog as it's main gameplay element, so it's very text-heavy. Still, there's no other game like it.

It'll be underwhelming somewhat, should have started on it.
