Have you played FFT or Vagrant Story? The story in FFXII is made by the same person who did the stories for those games. It has a samey feel as them. No saving the world, it's all about politics and theatrical drama. I think its very fun and interesting. The villains aren't typical incarnations of darkness, but real characters with their own motivations. They aren't evil, they just have a different point of view.
Strange, I always got the impression that you hated all JRPGs. I haven't played FF7, so I can't tell. In FF10, most of the characters, except for auron, are pretty derp, though kind of in a loveable way. And the story surrounding the characters was something I thoroughlly enjoyed.I found the story of FF12 extremely boring, but I loved FF7 and FF10 stories. Make of that what you will.

Too bad Ramza and Ashley were Bro-tier protagonists while Vann is just kinda "there" for the entire plot.

Yeah, but FF12 was political melodrama for the sake of political melodrama. + The characterers never gave you the slightest reason to care about them. E.g. Baltiher "oh look I'm a badass sexy pirate with a sexy voice and a bunny girl fuck buddy", Basch (?) "regenegade dude whose father is sorta evil", etc - the characters are given a slight background, and that's it, no chactacter development no nothing.
FFT Ramza on the other hand was a hero you felt sorry for, the youngest brother in a family that went mostly rotten, trying to do his duty and keep his sister out of harm's way against all odds, which ended up with both of them dying (?). Delita, the idealistic mercenary to ambitious Machiavellian sort of type, a tragic figure as well - from Ramza's childhood friend, to losing his sister in a tragic accident, to plotter/betrayer, to a dying (?) Regent at the hands of the person who was closest to him. And there are many, many more. FFT's story is both epic and personal.
Vagrant Story didn't even aim for epicness, it's just the music and the atmosphere and the visuals that shaped it into a memorable experience.
FF12 tries to be epic, but the characters are far too bland so the epicness never grows on you. It feels formulaic. I played through it once, and I can't even remember half of its cast, or the villains, or whatever.
which ended up with both of them dying (?)
XII is RTwP

Sad thing is, games older than FF7 still had better looking cutscenes
