Bsically as soon as you preset the protagonist, it's not really a "true" RPG in my mind, whatever its other merits.
I'll probably regret asking this, but how defined does the preset protagonist have to be before you experience it as disqualifying the game as an RPG? To take a very old example, Ultima IV requires you to play as the Avatar.

The avatar is a title, not a specific person. The game demands that you play as someone from earth that got cast into the world of Britannia. You still have a lot of control over who the Avatar is.

In fact, consider that even Planescape gave you some freedom in defining your character. In that game you play as a personality of TNO. But you can come up with whatever personality you want; in fact in some way the game reacts to your choices about what kind of personality you are a lot more than many games with more control over who the player character is do.

It also requires you to play in a manner consistent with the Virtues if you want to progress in the game. So preset protagonist, restricted play style choice - but many consider it one of the all-time classic old-school RPGs.

Sure, but the game always puts how you do things like this on your hands. If you want to play as someone who refuses to take the quest and just adventures around; and eventually "retires" (by stopping the game), this is not substantially different from tackling the main quest (though not as much fun, I would argue). On the other hand, in a game like Cyberpunk, if you try to just ignore the main quest, there is little to no fun to be had and it feels like you are going against the spirit of the character since the devs determined some responses you can give at some events which none might fit your view of your PC. The game is not just unresponsive to choices outside the story they made for the PC, it makes dialogues and cut-scenes that require you to actively ignore stuff that happened in order to roleplay the way you want.

Note that I write this as someone who has not played Cyberpunk himself, I am just using what I've seen people mention about the game and how other similar games like it usually go. If you feel I am not being fair to it, feel free to reply about my mistake, but many of these issues are inherent of more "cinematic" games.

I dunno none of those mods seem interesting to me

I've got 86 mods lol, and I'm manually installing them (it's ok to keep track if you remember to delete old versions of the zips as soon as the new ones arrive). And I haven't even started on big tiddy mods yet :)

But mind you, a lot of those are just small tweaks, graphics/aesthetic tweaks and a lot of QOL tweaks to get things just right and cosy for me, and working sweet on my old comp with nearly maxed (but not RT) settings (and there are like about 4 modders who've always been very active with QOL mods for the game, they have loads) For example, one mod is "filter saves by lifepath" - which is just what it sounds like.

I'd say there's less than a dozen or so mods that actually change anything even semi-important, and even then, it's not as substantial a change as it was using Full Game Rebalance back in the days of 1.06 or whenever it was - that was a huge difference from the base game as it was then. Now, CDPR have incorporated so many things from mods like that which got popular, plus their own refinements, that you hardly need to mod it much at all now for gameplay, it's fairly solid and enjoyable out of the box. The remaining bugs are either the occasional NPC stuck in the floor, or some remaining obscure game stoppers (as described in the last update). (Plus of course the basic unsatisfactoriness of the urgent MQ plus open world tempting to wander around in but without much in the way of RPG progression).

you can use steam console to rollback to 2.0 it was working fine for me with no issues.

You can do the same on GOG, you can turn off auto-update and it offers you the option of playing any of the previous versions right on the launcher, quick shuffle and download, and voila. Nice touch (though GOG Galaxy itself is a big janky). Having spent the past week or so getting a 2.0/PL modding setup I'm happy with, I'm going to hang off until all the core mods and important (to me) mods have been udpated.

Finally finished the DLC. Pretty much the same deal as the base game: lots of railroaded shit, lots of actually fun missions with freedom. Problem is, the characters are less likable so the railroaded stuff was far less enjoyable. Still an aliright expansion I'd say and I didn't seen all yet even.

One thing I can say for sure: the composer hasn't lost his talent: plenty of preem tracks across the board.

Based on the rest of what you say and in context, it's clear you're talking about RPG stuff and that's probably more or less true. You can be more or less snarky, but it's limited and not really worth discussing.

I just object to your use of "fun". The most fun parts of the game are what you're doing outside of the MQ imo. I just like setting gangers on fire with my mind and driving like an asshole though, so YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I haven't played the game myself and I was going by comments I have seen about it. In fact, I almost didn't post the reply because I don't think I would be fair at all to CP commenting on it like that. But I decided to post because I wanted to discuss Ultima a bit.

Eh it's alright for one playthrough if you turn off your mind and go for the cinematic ride. Outside of that, you're better off keeping a mid game save to screw around side questing and driving around.

I haven't played Cyberpunk either so I don't have a dog in that fight. I commented because I thought the question of what constitutes a preset protagonist isn't as clear as it seems at first blush.

You can have a character with a preset narrative role but significant build freedom. Ultima IV is an example of that, as is DOS2 if you use origin characters. Many JRPGs restrict both narrative role and build freedom.

The Body check for restraining Myers scales just like every other one. At level 45, PRESIDENT SMASH required 20 Body to settle down.

For some reason, her check doesn't see gorilla arms either.
