Cyberpunk is an archaic, unstable mess.
The game deserves criticizm, but how is it "archaic"? You also call it unstable, which I think is another unfounded claim.

Care to back these two claims up?

Cyberpunk as piece of technology was developed by nearly ten years. They put inside many of modern features (deals with Nvidia and others companies), but it's like putting new clutch to Citroen DS. It's working, the car is moving, but on bumps you feel this change. Cyberpunk is made from added parts, mostly old, without strong technological core. Other car example - It's like this strange motor things made by peasants on province.

Also design feel at best odd. NPC are standing, there is no other physics other than object moving (and not even all), city is horizontal and noninteractive etc.

I've never heard this before. When I play the game, I'm personally impressed with its graphical fidelity. It's actually one of the truly best-looking computer games that's come out in years. Granted, the game has gone through some serious growing pains, actually getting worse after release, but I don't think that qualifies as being "archaic". The screenshots in this very thread counter your claim that the game is archaic. Maybe you don't actually understand what that word means.

You also claimed the game is unstable, but have yet to elaborate.

Cyberpunk looks good...when is still...and car/NPC works correctly. But my point is different:



That's video of early build. You'll say: "But they dropped all of this to the bin!". And my answer will be: "They are?".

It's not only textures or old ideas, but clunkines inherited from one aborted version on another.

Why there is so few cars and NPC? Game is saving memory from all flashy NVIDIA things.

Even before the game was neutered to accomodate the PS5, it never crashed on me. I actually can't remember it ever crashing on me.

The game is stable.

I kinda wish the devs tried to add all of the crazy shit of the pnp game this game is based on. As a 90s pnp, it had everything ranging from blatantly stealing from WoD, to random stuff like Biotechnica making panthers with optical camo and laser eyes "to protect them from poachers", genetically engineered werewolves, not-vampires stolen from Cybercity Oedo 3, gangs of teenagers that do kung-fu and in one of the supplements acquired nanotech magic superpowers, furries of all kinds, etc.

But that would likely scare away people and take ages to render.

I know the context is different, but speaking of "archaic" I'm fully in the camp of those who regret that CDPR moved the timeline to 2077 and didn't adopt the retro futuristic "cyberpunk as imagined in the 1980s" aesthetics. I think in such a context all the characters' default edgyness, and "always take it to the edge" mentality would have felt much more natural instead of slightly cringe as it does currently. At least to me.

Can you now actually shoot the tires on vehicles and make them crash? Coz if not than this aint no really upgrade to vehicle combat.
They mention you can slice tires with a katana from a bike.

It's at 3:15:

Shooting tires and gas tanks is mentioned at 4:20. I remember they had gas tanks exploding in Mafia 2, can't remember the original Mafia.

That would have been a different game altogether, and a much better one - San Andreas in Night CIty. The ultimate crossbreed between San Andreas, Corsairs and Mount & Blade. I'm surprised no one copies the M&B formula. Fight for territory, manage your reputation with factions, build up your own power base.

But when you think about it you can either do that, or you can do an interactive movie with Keanu, can't do both. And normies are in the market for movies, not for games, even if they claim otherwise.

I'm actually thankful they didn't go that route, even Deus Ex skirted dangerously close to the edge with all the disparate conspiracy theories it tried to work in under the same roof, and I think it's fair to say that Pacotti had a much tighter focus than most game writing today. I'm apprehensive of the kitchen sink approach in general, I get that P&P publishers need to constantly churn out fresh, exciting material, but it leads to a lot of incoherent bloat.

Same. 2077's art direction seems to be a more accurate projection from our contemporary fashions so you could argue the aesthetics of the fiction were "updated" for the modern day, but the problem is that contemporary fashions are burning garbage. Maybe not as bad as the early 2000s in some respects, but you're almost literally trying to put lipstick on a pig. An ugly, garish pig rolling around in waaay too much sunlight.

I've praised CBP's art direction, it's coherent and accomplished, CDPR executed well on their vision, but that vision doesn't appeal to me as much as the 80s/90s tech-noir. I wish they'd just bit the bullet on retrofuturism and I think it'd have made a stronger impression with general audiences, even if a minority would've blasted it for looking "dated."

For what's worth, the CPunk wikipedia has some info about CPunk Europe. Surprisingly, some places are better compared to Night City, or even compared to IRL: Spain is the same as ever, but with less poverty, for example.

This would be absolute gold to release a game based on it in the current year:
For extra hilarity, the European Union is evil in CPunk. I mean, eviler than RL, as they became Nazis 2.0 overnight and are responsible for a lot of bad stuff.

I'm actually thankful they didn't go that route, even Deus Ex skirted dangerously close to the edge with all the disparate conspiracy theories it tried to work in under the same roof, and I think it's fair to say that Pacotti had a much tighter focus than most game writing today. Content bloat is a danger yes, but I was exaggerating. It wouldn't be possible to cram everything of course, but some of the crazier stuff could have been a nice touch. Of course, that requires competent devs who are not afraid of pissing off dangerhairs.

Reminder that Cyberpunk was so successful that CDPR's stock still hasn't recovered 3 years later.
edgerunners and phantom liberty may be better for cyberpunk in the long term than if 2077 had just shipped as a solid 8/10 Witcher clone. whenever anyone hears "cyberpunk" now they think of pondsmith and CDPR. no such thing as bad publicity

Small nods to some of it are still there. There are nutheads on the street and conspiracy freaks on the radio saying that the Arasaka don't age not because of their tech and forturne, but because they're vampires. I remember hearing that there was a whole underground section of the map where you might've had a mission with vampires too, which was cut.



While the game is pretty shallow in the elements it offers I don't think I'd say this is because of them working on top of aborted versions of it, it's probably just because both a lack of clear focus/vision and because that's what they could get running before release. Why is there a craft system in the game? Well, every other AAA game has one so we must too. How do we make it work? Oh, uhhhh... how do other games do it? alright, let's just have it so it's your typical number-go-up and you get materials as common drops/recycling unwanted items. Easiest way to do it, we don't have time for anything else. Ship it.
Same thing with the police system, the cyberware system, the swimming, the UI. I'd say the only thing that might fit the "this was here before; let's work on it" argument would be the city map itself. There's absolutely zero reasons for it to be as vertical as it currently is when your character doesn't have a way to easily access those places and there's no real content to be found there. There are a lot of left overs you might find in it, and places like Pacifica really feel like they just ran out of time to properly finish it as is.

If you mean that the game is graphically stitched together, while I can kind of see it, it doesn't look wrong for this genre. It kinda fits honestly. You see a fat blob redneck with a greasy wifebeater and cargoshorts struggling his way through the streets? Yeah, it's (nu) america, this place is a shithole, it fits. You see the ugliest, bald, multicolored randomly generated NPC with one (1) robot leg? It's a futuristic dystopia, why wouldn't there be someone like this? etc etc. The city itself is the same. Being stiched together like that doesn't stand out that much in this setting in particular, more so if they tried to put some thought into it. Models and textures look great even in first person which is something very few open world games like this can pull off.

It just doesn't seem like they had a bunch of different games and stitched it together, at least for me. It just seems like they wanted to implement too many things and they ran out of time/where stretched too thin.
