I kinda wish the devs tried to add all of the crazy shit of the pnp game this game is based on. As a 90s pnp, it had everything ranging from blatantly stealing from WoD, to random stuff like Biotechnica making panthers with optical camo and laser eyes "to protect them from poachers", genetically engineered werewolves, not-vampires stolen from Cybercity Oedo 3, gangs of teenagers that do kung-fu and in one of the supplements acquired nanotech magic superpowers, furries of all kinds, etc.

But that would likely scare away people and take ages to render.
Small nods to some of it are still there. There are nutheads on the street and conspiracy freaks on the radio saying that the Arasaka don't age not because of their tech and forturne, but because they're vampires. I remember hearing that there was a whole underground section of the map where you might've had a mission with vampires too, which was cut.

While the game is pretty shallow in the elements it offers I don't think I'd say this is because of them working on top of aborted versions of it, it's probably just because both a lack of clear focus/vision and because that's what they could get running before release. Why is there a craft system in the game? Well, every other AAA game has one so we must too. How do we make it work? Oh, uhhhh... how do other games do it? alright, let's just have it so it's your typical number-go-up and you get materials as common drops/recycling unwanted items. Easiest way to do it, we don't have time for anything else. Ship it.
Same thing with the police system, the cyberware system, the swimming, the UI. I'd say the only thing that might fit the "this was here before; let's work on it" argument would be the city map itself. There's absolutely zero reasons for it to be as vertical as it currently is when your character doesn't have a way to easily access those places and there's no real content to be found there. There are a lot of left overs you might find in it, and places like Pacifica really feel like they just ran out of time to properly finish it as is.

I think the aborted versions have a lot to do with the lack of a coherent vision. If you don't know what you're doing, or if you flag-change your goals according to what's popular, you'll never know what is "my main path" is. This vision from the first trailer, the one similar to Blade Runner, was the most complete Cyberpunk interaction CDP has ever made. After that there was only thing, that Germans call "polnische wirtschaft".

If you mean that the game is graphically stitched together, while I can kind of see it, it doesn't look wrong for this genre. It kinda fits honestly. You see a fat blob redneck with a greasy wifebeater and cargoshorts struggling his way through the streets? Yeah, it's (nu) america, this place is a shithole, it fits. You see the ugliest, bald, multicolored randomly generated NPC with one (1) robot leg? It's a futuristic dystopia, why wouldn't there be someone like this? etc etc. The city itself is the same. Being stiched together like that doesn't stand out that much in this setting in particular, more so if they tried to put some thought into it. Models and textures look great even in first person which is something very few open world games like this can pull off.

It just doesn't seem like they had a bunch of different games and stitched it together, at least for me. It just seems like they wanted to implement too many things and they ran out of time/where stretched too thin.

Yes, from a conceptual point of view, CDP created a certain vision of cyberpunk for the marketing campaign, but it is a shallow vision, limited to only a few determinants. I also think that the most interesting thing they added to the set is one that they never properly developed - the pornographisation urban space. This would be true cyberpunk, i.e. bringing the nightmares of our everyday life to the extreme. We are already familiar with large corporations, but hardly anyone understands how great the pressure of pornography is on our culture and lives. Ellis brushed against something like this in the comic "Transmetropolitan", but that was a long time ago. Those moronic ratings that make players stupid kids are also to blame.

As Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3 are massive disappointments, we can hope that cyberpunk can recapture our hearts and become GOTY of RPGCODEX this year.
Repeat of 2016 would be amusing, but I doubt it.

It's funny that once people are reminded what normal, big budget "RPGs" are like they get a reality check and are forced to reevaluate CP2077. Even the supposed high demands are suddenly very reasonable and the game is "well optimized".

Sadly, this will be CDPR's last moddable game. It's Unreal Tech only from now on.

I don't have the 3d tech knowledge and qualifications, but I'd really love to see a technical explanation on what did Bethesda do with the engine for Starfield to achieve this kind of processing power cost for these, less than remarkable, to put it mildly, visuals.

It's like they slapped layers of post-processing,on top of the rendering stage that dates from Skyrim, because this abnormal fidelity to processing cost ratio goes back to Fallout 4.

It has to have something to do with the creation engine. I have never seen a game or project run properly on it for what it realistically brings. Maybe it's the remenants of the gamebryo base it uses that it's finally catching up to modern systems and the increasing quality in graphics.

AI is a possible answer, all the more so if people are pissed with their CPUs rather than their GPUs. Cyberpunk's ambient AI is positively braindead and CDPR have little headroom to improve it, what with so much of the CPU taken up by dynamic environmental streaming and their massive, contextually appropriate crowds. I'd expect Bethesda to have equipped Starfield's ambient "citizens" with streamlined AI packages, but even so they're probably still much more sophisticated and demanding than your typical CBP or TW3 no-namer.

Speaking of, here is an experiment you can do by yourself - fire up Witcher 3 and stand on a street in Novigrad. Peds will walk through their waypoints, bump into you as if they can't see you at all, make a disapproving sound effect, and then go around you. I guess the bump animation and the sound effect are intended to give the AI time to draw a waypoint around your character to the next waypoint. But the remarkable fact is they are walking as if blind. This is fixed in Cyberpunk, they go around you before bumping into you.

Loadenfield NPC AI showcase:

I can't make out if "even higher level AI isn't hard to kill" is supposed to be criticism or praise? In witcher 3 it was a source of discontent (and rightfully so) that guards 2 levles higher have red skulls and are nigh impossible to kill. Now being able to kill guards is a bad thing.

Citizens not reacting to violent behavior is certainly bad.

Late but I'm disappointed about the "big" 2.0 update being focused on combat shit.
It was the final nail in my coffin of copium hoping that CDPR would actually try to deliver some of what they promised. I guess they really want to get Phantom Liberty out and move on rather than expand role playing options in the game.
I'll play it anyway because I'm a dumbass though.

I tried CP2077 on release and it was pretty buggy and ran like shit. I installed it again today as I have a RT capable gfx card now and wanted to see how it looked. On an AMD 5800X3D and a (now pretty meh) 3070 it runs with all RT options on/ultra at 1440p with DLSS engaged at around 60fps, which is way better than I thought it would.

The atmosphere with RT lighting is pretty impressive, I have to say. The game is still crap but at least it looks great. Especially in light of shit like Starfield that looks comically bad in comparison to CP, which is 3 years old at this point.

I've not played it since the summer of 2021. Does the game still feel empty or did they add new quests and other stuff to do? The 2018 demo has some interesting mechanics that did not made it into the final game.

you play this game for 10 hours and you see everything the game has to offer unless you want to see the same with higher number

Much as I love The Witcher 3, there's no way its Blood and Wine expansion deserved to win over Deus Ex 4. I blame press fashions and Square's dumb publishing tactics.

What's most shocking is that none of the games in the list are good, let alone a good RPG.

2016 was such a bad year.

  • Stranger of Sword City
  • Dungeon Rats
  • Tale of Wuxia
  • Avadon 3
  • The Technomancer
  • Krai Mira (kek don't do it)

Deus Ex 4 is superb and second only to the original. Blood & Wine was a solid expansion to TW3 which, in turn, was excellent in its own genre, movie-games "inspired by real events RPGs", I just didn't like it as much as the original or Hearts of Stone.

2023, on the other hand... I've got a BG3 I can't be arsed to play because its interfaces are so mind-numbingly obtuse and ponderous, a Starfield which may end up comparing unfavourably to Oblivion, and a Phantom Liberty which is... the expansion to Cyberpunk 2077.

Yes, if Dragon's Dogma is considered a 2016 game due to the PC port releasing that year, then it single-handedly redeemed the year by itself; there was a hot competition for Codex GotY 2016 between the Dragon's Dogma PC port and the English translation of a Czech mod for Fallout. :M

Also worth mentioning for 2016 CRPG releases: Salt & Sanctuary, which is an atmospheric 2D interpretation of a Souls-like action RPG, and Warlock of Firetop Mountain, which might be the best digital gamebook ever created.

Is warlock of firetop better than sorcery! ?

Warlock of Firetop Mountain is quite good actually, the addition of tacticool combat plus characters who all behave differently in said combat was a really good decision and I am still disappointed they didn't do this with further installments.
