There are actual negative consequences for the site in terms of Google's penalties when you're trying to further some bizarre small font agenda in 2022.
Made up nonsense for what we're discussing. For PC, font size is NOT a factor in google ranking.

For mobiles, yes, but CSS for mobiles is a separate thing. For example:
Code:
@media only screen and (max-width: 600px) {
  body {
    font-size: 16px;
  }
}

Which browsers are that?

Also, it's not just about subjective user experiences here. There are actual negative consequences for the site in terms of Google's penalties when you're trying to further some bizarre small font agenda in 2022. The Codex is no exception here, most of the traffic here come from Google. And you really need to be messed up in the head if you intentionally want to get less traffic to your website.

Anyway, obviously trying to convince any small font enthusiasts to see the light of day will be futile, so I've made another "Small Font Fluid" style and you can go knock yourself out with the small fonts there. I can make it all even smaller there with enough demand!

1. You used the fixed width template, not the variable (fluid?)
2. You've got the naming convention incorrect, it should be "normal" font and the default, I think you meant to make a new template called "large font fluid" for those that can't be bothered to CTL+mouse wheel up

Again with the twisting. That's not the case. People with disabilities can ctrl + mouse wheel up in a matter of a second and adjust it depending on the severity of their disability. Nobody's leaving those people behind.
Your argument is a complete fallacy.
Of course it is leaving a good portion of those people behind. You have no idea how many people with poor vision have no clue that they can easily zoom in on text in browsers. I've had a number of website tech support experiences over the years and it was such a revelation to so many people complaining about not being able to read the text due to it being too small that you wouldn't believe. But you can't teach each user this individually. More advanced users know how to zoom, others don't. That's the way it is, browsers aren't going to push a zooming agenda when it's the responsibility of the websites to have text such a size that it's readable without having to resort to zooming for the majority of people.

Your argument is a fallacy, really.

It can be actually, but only for the mobile version of the website. When people search from their phones, there may be a slight penalty in the search results for websites that are not mobile optimized (such as having "too small fonts").

And it's true that the font size can be separately adjusted for mobiles with CSS.

Twiglard did you change back the names of the styles to incorrect terminology that I fixed yesterday? Fluid means infinitely stretched layout, fixed width means layout set to a specific px width. I fixed this yesterday, but it's all been changed back incorrectly. Fixing it all again now.

Yes, it was me.

That's not how these styles were named prior to the move. Check the running version of the XF1 forum.

Disregard that, you're right. Sorry.

Regarding the "Brofist" label: maybe just remove it entirely? It's far enough from actual reactions to not cause confusion, looks pretty neat too:

Jesus Christ, we must have lost so many gramps and grandmas over the years. We must make the font 50px now to lure them all back in. They are our core audience.

Also your "small font" theme blows ass, it shrinks all the fonts. Get off your high-horse, fix the default font and make your gram and gramps mode optional.

edit: please, and thank you

You don't have a clue how much importance Google has assigned to the mobile experience in the last few years. Read up, because you're obviously operating on some 2010 notions.

Here's just a small bit to get you started:

On March 26th, 2018, Google officially announced that they would be using mobile first indexing. This means that they are going to be indexing websites based on their mobile version- not their desktop version (as was done in the past). This update has come at a time when mobile searches are becoming the majority and desktop searches are becoming the minority.

Read more at Gist: Site Not Mobile Friendly? You Can Kiss Your Google Rankings Goodbye https://getgist.com/mobile-friendly-google/

The cost and benefit of mobile-friendly sites are apparent, but what does it really mean to be “Mobile Friendly”? According to Google, it means that your site:
  • Does not use software not commonly found on phones (aka Flash)
  • Uses text that can be read without having to zoom in.
  • Auto adjusts website content so users don’t have to rotate their screen or zoom.
  • Places links an adequate distance apart so it is easy to click on the correct one.

Don't twist the truth. The oldex design was in line with what was modern in 2006, when nobody had 800x600 monitors.

Everyone had 1280*1024 and it was 19 inch. Nowadays, I have 1920*1080, which is 27 inch. Which means almost the same DPI - 86 pixels per inch vs 81.

Somehow this DPI worked for people for 20 years, but now suddenly doesn't? Bullshit.
Codex font remained the same since 2002. It remained the same due to not-giving-a-fuck and when the original switch to Xenforo came with an increased font size I was there to support it, but the obstinate user base got their way for another 10 years.

Also, as I pointed out previously, I'm pretty sure that the small font enthusiasts pulled out their every alt to pad their votes on that poll, so it's not really reliable in any way.

Oh yes, it must have been Russian trolls.

You sound deranged. If you want to do whatever you want to with the site (which you already do), say it already, but don't give us the most obviously poor calls for legitimacy. It's a cowardly thing to do.

Imagine thinking "I'm selling out!" is a good argument that is gonna placate our wishes for a good internet site that still reminds us of 1.0 days. I'd say close this thread and the entire feedback forum if you're gonna wash away all the feedback you dislike. More honest at least.

Oh, now you're complaining that the other fonts I shrinked proportionally are too small? How is this possible? Say it isn't so!

Anyway, to support your now obviously ailing vision, I INCREASED the smaller font sizes back. How's that?

because it's just the post body font size that you've screwed with. no one is advocating for the shrinking of all font sizes, we're advocating for the return of the original font size in the post body. by offering up this theme as a supposed solution, you're re-casting our request into something unreasonable so that you can make posts like the one I'm quoting.

It's terribly obvious, and not a good look.

Maybe a compromise can be found by using a @media .css query? But this requires information on display resolution and HiDPI scaling of users who most vocally demand the 13px font size. Do users want small font size when their display is larger or smaller than average...?

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Grab the Codex by the pussy RPG Wokedex Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I helped put crap in Monomyth
Why?

I don't understand all this autistic screeching about font size. I could read the rather small size of the old forums just fine, but that just means I can also read it when it's slightly larger, and so can you.

It does seem like a storm in a teacup, especially as font size is super easy to customise on a per user basis if desired.

I actually quite like the larger font size as it's super easy to read.

Simply use 13px for desktops and a larger font for mobile. Simple as and Google will be happy too.

It's terribly obvious that you'll never stop complaining.

Step 1. Poll users to see if the old font size is readable, by asking if more users zoom to read the site versus don't. Results demonstrate that a majority of poll respondents do not zoom; the font size is fine.

Step 2. Upgrade forum software, change post body font size.

Step 3. Get called out for changing font size.

Step 4. State that it's your personal preference that it is larger and then haphazardly rotate through excuses of (i) the poll was rigged, (ii) its to improve our search rankings, and (iii) to help those with disabilities.

Step 5. Act frustrated when you do a thing a majority did not want, don't like, and they remind you of this.

Yeah, I'm over here just complaining cuz its fun. Sure.
