so all the fuss around battle brothers was for a turn based, limited mount & blade with level scaling?

I use it as a bait. Move crossbowman forward, shoot, enemy approaches on all of their 9 ap, rotate, hit em.Does anyone else really like the "rotation" perk/ability? Being able to swap front and back-liners pinned in a ZOC is so critical. And the enemy AI seems to use it pretty regularly too.
Ever watched the combat log during the opening battle, Great Deceiver?
Pretty great game, started playing today.
Getting Black Company vibes, was it an inspiration?
Croaker in the books was actually a doctor.Pretty great game, started playing today.

So I just started playing this and I am having my butt handed to me even on beginner. Any tips or anything? I can barely keep any money on me so no chance in hell of getting decent mercs. Also, it it just me or does the enemy seem to have better armor penetration than my mercs do? Seems like I can't poke through guys in armor whereas the enemy kills my dudes with no problem while they are wearing the same armor.
I guess, for me, it would be nice to have some sort of AC or something to know how much protection the armor actually provides..

Armour protection is just quantitative. 200 is more than 100 and less than 300, nothing more.
As for the enemy cutting through your armour, it might be that you are fighting raiders. They have better weapons, and thus, their armour damage and penetration is better. Stick to thughs and the low level nazchwhatervertheyrecalled for the early game.
It has been said already but: quantity over quality, at least at the beggining. Hire cripples, beggars, whatever is offered to you, until you have 12 men. Equip them with any helmet (even hats), any cheap armour, a spear (until they get some points in melee, because it gives them bonus to hit chance) and a shield. Maneuver to surround enemies (it also gives bonuses) and poke them until death. Take easy contracts.
And if everything else fails, remember, you are a mercenary. Run away, or try to lure the enemy to an ambush with militia or noble armies, or join ongoing fights and take some of the loot. Bully, trick, fight dirty.
