Considering the day of the week and hour of the day, I think it's safe to say the peak window for Avowed is near closing. I hope this results in layoffs similar to BioWare, if not a complete studio shutdown (though I hope the people immediately find gainful employment somewhere else outside vidya, I'm not that cruel). I have a dream, a dream where people realize that games are not made by studios, but by men, and those men having left the studio years ago, means Obsidian is nothing but a rotting shell. Better to bury it.

The problem with Obsidian is two-folds they think they're too god to pander fantasy fans with tired cliches but at the sane time they don't have any good ideas on their own.

Why the fuck are we forced to make a fungus-headed monstrosity? Because that's the new original race that Obsidina had came-up with. Their upgrade of Tieflings and Aasimars. I can already see the thought process behind it in my mind. D&D has Tieflings, formerly beloved rascals, the underclass of the spheres, now they're just humans with funny horns, but whatever. We should have them in our game. But it doesn't make any sense? Why would a devilish character have goat horns? This world has no Christianity and no Fauns or Baals which were depicted with animal features and later demonized. In fact it would be silly to at the same time have a pagan pantheon and very monotheistic devils at the same time. But gods have attributes and people should resemble these features, so a goldike of mushroom god should have a mushroom face.

And of cours there's nobody to point out that it looks terrible. According to Sawyer and likes writing is about eliminating all perceived flaws. Because there is no logical argument agaisnt them. You can't use facts and logic to 100% objectively proove that a guy who looks like The Last of Us mooks is fucking ugly. And even if you could you can't proove that it's objectively better to have good looking characters.

As a result we're left with a fantasy universe only a Volcan would love. Of course a real Volcan would point out that this kind of game is far too silly for him to play as magic itself is illogical. Even creating a fictional world is itself illogical. How would a completely different civilization living on completely different planet with completelly different history create something resembling our worlds' Reneissance? Which is why Sawyer made Pentiment.

"But hey goyyyz, it's good for what it is he-he!"

The protogenic cause of all decline

When you hear or read shit such as, "it's decent", "it's good for what it is", "it's okay", "it's not great but it's not horrible either", "I had fun", these inferior people should be instantly smitten with a +5 Holy Scythe of Disastrous Consequences. Breeding mediocrity is super dangerous for RPGs (if you can even call this a mediocrity)

It amazes me how people lower their standards to hype up bad games. Imagine wasting 30 hours of your life playing this slop.

I wrote this probably 15 years ago on a different forum and restated it every couple of years,

During the RPG drought which followed the Renaissance era, people were so desperate that they began accepting anything, any bread crumbs thrown their way no matter how pathetic and pitiful. Game has 3 races? No problem, gimme. Dumbed down character progression? I'll take it. Binary dialogue options? There is nothing else to play anyway.

This is how the erosion of standard occurred and it goes on to this day. This is how we got from Baldur's Gate to NwN, from NwN to KotOR and Jade Empire, from KotOR to Ass Effect, From Ass Effect to Dragon Age, etc. In every cycle you water it down a little bit and dilute it.

Gentle reminder to everyone in this thread that a game that has this in it is releasing in 4-3 days, and you can choose to play it instead:

Strange as it may seem in these times, games made by people that don't hate humanity are indeed still being made in the Big 25, and YOU can play them. I swear to you, if I were a man of means, I would buy gift copies for anyone that asked. That's how much I believe in this product.

What you mean games made by people that don't hate humanity?

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
At least with Veilguard it was clear who that game was made for and while clearly degenerate it was somewhat competently made - keeping in mind the average IQ of degenerate that would play it. Who the hell is masochistic/depressed/retarded enough to play this slop?

No, it is weird, because Diablo 3 was also a humongous seller that Obsidian Entertainment would be more than happy to get a slice of the sells pie of.

Making an isometric action game would also allow them to keep the exact same aesthetic as the games it’s related, they likely would’ve got the game out years earlier, and they most definitely could’ve done it for less than they spent on this shit. So yeah, from a business perspective, it’s pretty fucking weird. In a world where isometric action game Diablo 3 can sell over 30 million in around three years, an isometric action game is just as valid of a money making venture as chasing Skyrim; and you can chase one of those things for far less money.
They wanted to make a game they wanted to play, not maximize cost/sales potential.
Roguey nails the problem - today's Obsidian just has shit taste in games.

Avowed has heaped my plate full of steaming hot choices. One of the first things I did with my "Court Augur" background was decide that yes I did actually have a romantic history with this Inquisitor Lödwyn person everyone's talking about. I had no idea if it was going to come up much (it has, fun enough) or if it was just a little moment of backstory flair, but it sure felt juicy to make that choice.
A flavor background choice that may or may not come up later. Does the author of this article tell us if it does come up later? No, either it doesn't or she hasn't played far enough to see it matter. What a great start for "choices that matter"!
I don't want to defend Avowed but this review (and others) does state that the choice comes up later.
