The marketing is your typical buzzwords, and Avowed do have this features, just not in the way they present it. It’s not the outright lie, it’s Todd Howard school of marketing.
I suppose you're right but it's about as dishonest as if someone presented Doom as:
"Every choice you make in Doom has a ripple effect. The fate of Phobos is in your hands, and your decisions will determine whether the forces of Hell win or lose. Player choice is at the heart of Doom - will you destroy Phobos, or be its saviour?"
That's technically true but such an absurd misrepresentation as to be akin to a lie.

What makes it notably shady is that they're obviously trading on Obsidian's name and legacy to try and hint that the game in any way resembles something like New Vegas.

Yeah, I don’t why they still riding on “from the legendary creators of FNV”, it did miracles for TOW(sales wise), but since TOW was a mediocre at best and in no way FNV2 everybody expected, nobody trusts Obsidian to deliver proper RPG anymore.
They should’ve sold Avowed as a brainless 360era Action-Adventure game, not some diluted Skyrim with C&C. But at least their staff was honest in their statements, be it lack of features or disdain and hatred for their audience

Yeah, this would have erased a lot of the anger toward it, I think. If people went in expecting something akin to The First Templar, a lot of the game's failings wouldn't really matter - the lack of player choice would be a given, the slightly janky and highly repetitive combat would be as expected, and the simplistic, hackneyed nature of the plot would have been a source of amusement rather than frustration.

Which is what makes me think Microsoft and Obsidian were at odds with this game; Microsoft clearly wanted people to think it was a spectacular cRPG in the style of New Vegas, while Patel and her team wanted to make a co-op ARPG with no big ambitions or pretenses, and at some point during development those two views collided, forcing Obsidian to quickly try and modify what they'd made into something more resembling TOW, with awful results.

I don’t think it was necessarily a Microsoft desire to present Avowed as “Obsidian classic RPG” probably Feargus and Parker wanted it to be TES 6: Dreamplague, but non of them had any talent for it, so Patel took one for the team and harvested that she could. Still, it would be interesting to read why Parker abandoned the project and why Josh didn’t take over

Interesting, I forgot Parker was on the project initially.

Yeah it sounds plausible and would explain the state the game is in - they set out to make their own Elder Scrolls competitor, it went shockingly wrong for obvious reasons and didn't get off the ground, the lead devs couldn't be bothered with it anymore, so Patel stepped in and (not unwisely) decided to just salvage the assets and mechanics into a co-op looter shooter.

A decent plan, ruined by expectations placed on the project by higher-ups (maybe within Obsidian, maybe Microsoft, maybe both) and the game ended up strained between different directions and unable to commit to any solid design philosophy. Either way, I think what's really killed the game is the remnants of Bethesda's formula. You can see it in people's reactions; all these videos about how Oblivion had better physics wouldn't be applicable if people weren't expecting a TES-like, which is how the game was marketed and definitely was imposed on the devs in some way.

New Vegas is an albatross around Obsidian's neck at this point... but it's also the only reason anyone still has any faith in them at all, so they're kind of stuck.

It would be better if the game was just so shitty it was funny.
At least you could laugh while watching everyone make fun of it.
Obsidian has managed to once again make a game so bland and mediocre that you can't even do that.

It's like 75 GB, I don't have space. And frankly I'm watching people who are trying to spend the effort after hey burned out on KCD II (Black Muramasa glorification game.)

I should stop watching this shit, and finish games I started.
Positives are combat and exploration, negatives are numerous.

When it is pointed out that Obsidian has less dynamic interactivity this is hand-waved by Roguey with the answer that such things were never aimed for and it is wrong to judge a game for what it doesn't do, rather than what it aims to do and what it actually does.
If Obsidian didn't want such criticism they shouldn't have made their games look like first person bethesda immersive sim-style to begin with. If they made TOW & Avowed in the style of 3rd action Bioware(ME, DAI) no one woulda criticized them for the lack of such features.

:M

The first person view was inherited from Chris Parker's Skyrim, they just rolled with it.

Bethesda games have optional tp also, it doesn't make them third person games. They wanted to imitate bethesda with TOW & Avowed but they lacked the budget with TOW and chickened out with Avoid when it came to developing the mechanical depth unlike Warhorse with KCD1-2. Now they are even owning it lmao. This, "surface level aping of bethesda + stale Obsidian narrative design" is their style and what they are known for apparently.

Why waste the time? You can easily look up the new bits of lore which is the only semi interesting thing and be done with it.

Men don't read anymore. Reading is increasingly for women. They dominate the commercial market for books.

Get your sons interested in reading or cope with the fact that they'll just be illiterate twitchy yappy mouth breathers.

It's Josh "NO FUN ALLOWED" Soyer's Pillows setting, now taken over by purple-haired trannies and DIEversity hires.

There was zero chance in hell it would be anything other than what it is.
