How far from AOW3 is AOW4? I thought I would never play it but kind of curious about what they did.

Short answer is crap that inherited the worst from Planetfall.

Frankly AoW3 became decent after backslash from players that said elven units are feeling the same as dwarven, and that's bad. Thus they added special features for each "class" units and tried to make generic types of units more different. Year of patches that introduced difference between species, and one expansion later it was playable game.

Also unit XP system gave motivation to not use them as sacrifices to win battles.

Since people have mentioned AoW1 a couple of times and since it's a much more interesting subject than modern AoW, it got me thinking: was there ever a (semi)indie project/kickstarter/whatever to create a Warlords/AoW1-type of game? Fantasy tb strategy with very streamlined, but smooth and tight mechanics focused on cranking out armies, map control and decking out heroes by raiding lairs. I can't recall a single one and find it pretty weird. There's "spiritual follower" to pretty much every niche crap out there now and these games were fairly popular and still have decent communities built around them.

Eador: Genesis I guess. AoW-style TBS isn't as popular as the Heroes-style.

Hm, I never thought about Eador as "this kind" of game, but you might be onto something here.

Seeing a new game that draws from classics like Warlords and MoM in the same way AoW1 did would be super cool.

You gotta respect DE, though. Ugliest piece of shit in the world but dude sold at least 1000 copies and it has double digit numbers of concurrent players even now.

$24 is overpriced? That's about as good as you can get these days. And it's a one time price no dlcs the dev continues to patch and support all three of his games...

Yes you should give DE a chance maybe one of the best dungeon games...

A good part of DE is PvEing quickly enough to murder neutral guardians when it gets to you, though, so I didn't find the broken AI to be such a big issue.

DE is a mess with a terrible UI but the dev for sure is *trying* to be a good dev and respect his players. Also OP should understand that niche games often have to sell at a higher price because they can't count on casuals and need to get more money from their "advanced/hardcore" users. Otherwise the games simply aren't viable to make.

The general consensus is that it's a carbon copy of Warlords. Interesting game nonetheless, plus the dev has said that he plans on releasing plenty more of additional updates.

Seems that way. As far as I can tell, it's basically one side attacks, some guys either die or take damage (not shown), the survivors go, the other side either die or take damage, repeat until one side is wiped out.

ok i tried it here's my 5-minute playtime review:

• game looks like shit (on ultra)
• game runs like shit
• things on map are too hard to read (because the game looks like shit)
• combat probably sucks but i didn't get to turn 2 to try it out
• shadow magic better

game looks okish. Its easier to read than many "modern 3d graphic". Combat is very good - better than aow3 (hero dont dominate battle, skill matters), Ai is better too (not smarter, but use many skills and tactical combat is interesting).

i didnt play it anymore (not a fan of influencing abutment provinces), while i did aow1 (i like capturing points - there and back). So agree with uninstall.

EDIT:
At the bottom of this wall of text I put some more of my impressions about tactical combat.

TLDR Hp to damage of all tier of units seems reasonably balanced.
Using skills is not a waste of turn
AI is using lots of skills (its interesting to watch Ai vs Ai battles).

I'll try it out this weekend and see if they've changed the game enough for it to be worth it, but I doubt it. The endless flood of DLC is also questionable.
