I dunno...
The apparent butthurt over the game's difficulty could be enough to generate a buzz resulting in more sales not less.

Demon's souls wasn't marketed by From Software as a hardcore die-all-the-time experience. It got that reputation from word of mouth starting on large gaming forums, the same way AoD is doing now. Corny ass lines like "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition" didn't show up until a couple years after everyone knew what the Souls series was all about.

Dark Souls is an action RPG so that's why I think people were willing to put up with the harshness, though. A dragon swoops down from nowhere and instantly killed me with one breath? That's harsh, but I can dodge him now that I'm used to it! Cool! Buy this! A street thug killed me on my first fight after I clicked on him and missed three times in a row? Avoid, it's masturbation material for grognards.

to reiterate:

I talked in my previous post about this before in more detail, but would it really hurt you that much, to provide a recommended build for each class + a popup that mentions during char generation that a jack of all trades is NOT viable and one has to focus at the beginning on a few core skills to be successful?

The same holds true for fights, that many people are not expected to win. This is a completely foreign concept to rpg players, even experienced ones, so why not simply tell them this before the first tough fight? This way, they realize that it is by design that they struggle/ are not expected to win the fight and not because the game system is inherently flawed.
Recommended build for each class in this game is an idiotic idea - that cannot really work, especially for morons.

As for general pointers - thats all they should be. General pointers. Not doing the work for spoiled scum.

Why does it make sense to communicate this to the players? Think about Dark Souls and their design philosophy that dying/ struggling is part of the gameplay. I can imagine that the rage would have been tremendous if people were to blindly buy the game without having read anything about it. Now Dark Souls had the tremendous advantage, that every single review out there mentioned this design philosophy, and players therefore knew what they were getting into. And they either appreciated it or simply saw that the design approach was not for them. But at the very least players didn't consider the game system as inherently flawed for misunderstanding what the designers intended.
AoD doesn't have that advantage, so you either can do something yourself to educate the players or put up with lots of unwarranted criticism from players (and a large silent minority that simply drops the game), that fault the game for the wrong reasons.
AoD is far from released. This is just an fing beta.
Solutions are of course possible and Vince and co will - of bloody course - do something about it. But there is no need for radical shit.

The real problem to me is the fact that jack of all trades are not viable enough (unless you know exactly what you are doing through metagaming). For most people (including me) a jack of all trades of some extent will be much more interesting character concept than an all-out fighter, or all-out talker or thief.
How about fucking off with your preferences?

And there's nothing particularly realistic or intuitive about a singleminded character design being superior, overall.
OH its "singlemindedness" now is it? Not specialization.
Superior? No, not at all. Thats not why the game is designed like it is, you fucking shit.

Its designed like it is because the narrative and setting demand it.
You know when a specialist is superior btw? When the situation demands it you kretin.

btw, none of my builds so far had been pure specialists at all.
And i play just fine.

So the problem is the combination of there not being enough skill points to make a well rounded character, and also that when you do make a well rounded character, you won't know how soon or how often a skill will actually be used.
The problem you say?

It's not so much that effective starting builds cannot be made, but they tend to be either boring or based on metagaming.
For a blatant moron like yourself, sure.

So I think an ideal solution would be to add more skillpoints on chargen,
I think the ideal situation is for you to shut the fuck up about your fucking jack of all trades and fuck off to some other game.

There's no way for a new player to know how early on a specific skill will present an opportunity for use, ie. if it's a worthwhile or useless investment upon starting out for a given background.
You mean there is no way for fucking morons like yourself to figure out with what skills they want to play a fighter or a talker?

That it isnt a problem of skills or skill points but you fucking retards that just cannot stop from trying to play the "GET ME EVERYTHING IN ONE PLAYTHROUGH!" game as self-entitled assholes that you are.
The fucking morons who are retardedly - repeatedly trying to play loremasters as ninjas and mercenaries in IG as talkers. And then you find that skills you chose dont work and then complain about the fucking skills.

And if you did simply give some more points upon startup, what would that change?
Oh, not a thing! Just a whole game so you can play it the way you want - all in one fucking go.

Maybe you can guess when thats going to happen. I mean, take a wild guess.

Has a jack of all trades really been good in any game? I mean, aside from ones where you get enough points to invest in every skill to a powerful level (Fallout, for example, gives you more than enough points to be a master of diplomacy and combat.).

Usually it seems like you're always better off specializing.

Though I do agree with your points.

Fighter/Mage/Thieves do pretty okay in BG2.

And in Skyrim. The only way to make it atleast a bit difficult except HP bloat. I think i was playing that as archer - sword and shield - thief - detsruction-alteration-restoration mage. I didnt do much of enchanting or backsmithing on purpose - and i still got it to some mid levels.

btw, Aurelian outpost wiped. Video converting.
Its actually not that difficult at all. Took me only three reloads. I had more trouble with the street bums.
But i guess it depends on what you do before. Brains over brawn indeed.

Much better.

After many trials, finally got out of Teron as a thief accomplishing everything I wanted to. Fuck Feng.

Praetor starting with 3 crossbow, 4 persuasion, 4 streetwise, 2 etiquette.

As usual, it's fun, but Teron is over within half an hour. Seeing how it goes in Maadoran with all non-combat.

New map looks great. Those details were exactly what it was missing.

Im one or two moves away from accomplishing everything i want to do with my thief. Well, after i learned to love the bomb and not want the things i cannot accomplish.

The Praetor has, through both inaction and action, caused the total collapse of Maadoran. Forgot to check out the Abyss, though.

It's almost like you have to play once with a combat char and once with a diplo char to experience a 'full' playthrough, where you get to do all sorts of great manipulation as well as some good old fighting.

Playing the game now, but not sure if I like it yet. The combat is pretty tough but I think I may have built poorly. I'm going to ditch the sword and board and try to be sword and dodgy.

the map could use a little more flavor.

instead of:
"inn" - the actually name of the inn "o ye old pony inn" or whatever
"feng" - "feng's shack"
"healer" - name of whatever it is. "kingdom hospital", "aunt betty the healer"
"tavern" - name of tavern (see inn)
"palace" - palaces usually have names "the golden palace" "the palace of achmedulla" etc

just a suggestion.

One major problem I have with AoD is that it often disarms you for no apparent reason or sometimes even switches your weapon to another one that's in your inventory.

Does this actually happen often? Haven't tried anything other than merc and Imperial Guard.

Legendary displays of patience by VD. Clearly all those years with 'dex have not gone to waste.

Yet it is only the first day. Within a week he will be a broken man. Steam forums are like the jungles of deepest, darkest Africa: they cannot be conquered, only passed through.

Is there still the awesome button? VD probably needs to provide an awesome character for every background, that would provide a lower difficulty mode and should lessen the whining and make everyone happy.

Not awesome enough, I picked the pre-made guy and I DIED in a fight. Such bullshit, boycotting this game hard.

Often enough for me to notice that it's the game that does it and it's not just me having a brain fart and not noticing.
