Counting to more than 2 is too hard for the Firaxis audience.
Okay, thanks. That's also an improvement, but it still feel like a half assed compromise. Why won't they have at least the option for TUs? Or at least script it so that modders can easily implement TUs after the game's release.

PORTUGUESE PRINCESS SQUAD IS A GOWe can now swap genders and set nationalities to our liking – if you want an all-female, all-Portuguese team, you can do that.
Guy drawing a sword and chopping an alien in half doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence.

It's not a matter of mechanics, guys. The whole "ninja looking guy draws a sword and chops alien in half" thing just rubs me the wrong way. Being "just dramatization" is EXACTLY the problem, because it seems like these guys are catering to the "press A for awesome" crowd. Also, Firaxis raped and murdered the Civilization franchise, so I hope they burn in hell for this. New Xcom is "good for what it is", tho. Long war makes it better, but it remains a "meh...'kay" game in my book.

It's a turn-based game with a PC exclusive. I hardly think that screams "press A to for awesome". Play XCOM (or don't, if you think its shit) if you want to know what the game will be like. It'll be XCOM, with procedurally generated levels, and lots of new enemies and features. If that doesn't interest you, cool, play something else, but basing your decision to play or not play a PC strategy game based on the reveal trailer's samurai moment is silly, to say the least.

Also, never said I would not play it, only that I expect a mediocre game at best, and a turd at worse.
I'm just surprised people still seem to think trailers have much to do with gameplay in 2015.

Not just the trailer man...look at dat sword/machete from what seems to be a gameplay screenshot. Also, skill 4 seems to be some "slash" ability. I just think swords have no place in an Xcom game.
I like it mechanically, it shakes up the game to have different units with different attack styles. Otherwise it just turns into Assault Rifle: The Strategy Game.

I didn't mind swords in Gollop's gba game http://www.mobygames.com/game/gameboy-advance/rebelstar-tactical-command/ but then again in Xcom swords could seriously undermine shotguns depending on the damage they do it might be better just to hook assault classes up with ars for range and blade for point blank.

This is a problem. I had a complete "what the fuck?" moment when they talked about assaults having swords and shotguns in the same loadout. I don't understand what they are thinking if that happens, the shotgun as designed in XCOM was basically a melee weapon. Having both is just too many eggs in one basket, and I'm guessing skills would either favor one or the other. Maybe it's a choice in that sense, of which you specialize in.

The game has stealth elements. I'm guessing the sword serves as a possible silent take down.
So they have a close combat specialist. What, every character should have sniper rifle and shotgun?
It won't stop me from playing the game and (maybe) enjoying it IF they don't fuck it up too badly. But I have a beef against swords in pretty much EVERY game that is about modern era/post (REAL) gunpowder weapons. Because swords were considered obsolete in fucking World War 1, more than a hundred years ago. The idea of a guy rushing into melee combat in an era where sniper rifles with 1km+ range have already been invented is just REALLY nonsensical. Star Wars addressed this issue by giving lightsabers the ability to reflect/deflect laser shots, which made sense. But if the game is mimicking our world (which it clearly is), then I'd say Shotguns and SMGs are THE CQB weapons. But NO, gotta have swords because...AWESOME.
I agree. Mechanically it COULD work. But let's face it: every game that added melee alongside guns (not black gunpowder shit, REAL guns) ended up with melee sucking balls.]
EDIT: LOL, I wrote about shotguns before reading the above post.
The two bit burglars of course. Two bit burglars vs. elite international squad of professional soldiers...who is better in melee range, and why?
