Fantasy and Catacombs - Worlds of tenacious Clans

In short: FaC WotC

The first adventure could be a stubborn clan of barbarians fighting evil sorcerers who suddenly come to the barbarian shoreline with a legion of boats.
These sorcerers exact tribute from the tribes in the form of everything they have.

Of course, the clans are divided and the player's task is to unite the clans.
Which is totally easy due to the danger that the magicians pose.

There are also clans that are afraid and have therefore signed a contract.
They pay the price in terms of women and beautiful men, because the magicians don't discriminate, which might be fine, but the magicians enjoy spiking their penises.

Honest question: what is D&D Beyond? Are people actually paying a subscription to play nuDND? For real - what is the benefit?

D&D Beyond is an online rule depository where you can access rules from the books you bought. The main gimmick is that you don't have to purchase the entire sourcbook but some part of like a single monster for example. It also has a character creator. The subscription allows you to share the things you've already purchased online with other people. They don't have a virtual tabletop yet. From what I understand new edition of DnD called simply OneDnD will move to subscription based model where there won't be individual books, but people will pay monthly fee to get a stream of content. As such there won't be new editions, they'll simply change the rules on their website over time. It will also be somewhat integrated into the WoTC vitual tabletop which is currently work in progress.

$30 USD a month? That's fucking bananas. Even if you're super into D&D that's crazy. I suppose it might work if a group only requires one sub and split it, but I don't know how the hell you're getting people into the hobby with that sort of thing. At best, you're just milking the shit out of your die hard fans who have the cash to burn.

I love the smell of corporate greed in the morning.

This sounds like pure lunacy.

But I'd hesitate to say stuff like "no one would ever agree to pay those 30$" since people have surprised me with even crazier purchases enough times in the past.

well, the leak claims that not only is it 30 dollars, it's 30 dollars per person, not just the DM.

That's insane, but there are VTTs that have the same monthly payment like Roll20. I prefer buy once and use forever like TTS.

"what if we just charged... infinity money?"

They must have some insane suit who doesn't understand the hobby at all. They look at the numbers and go "why isn't this as profitable as Magic?"

She doesn't as she came from Amazon and Xbox.

I think the plan was to use the PnP fanbase as a staging ground for something bigger: a quasi videogame community. The DnDBeyond stuff is all about an AI-DM. Can't find a DM to play actual DnD? No problem. This online tool can run you guys through a premium dungeon (tm). Which, if I'm not mistaken, does entail a somewhat simplified version of the rules.

Still 30 dollars is insane lmao. Not even Paradox would dare charge that much for their games as a service projects.

The dumb thing about trying to turn DnD into a video game is that if they do that they're no longer the biggest fish in the pond. If it turns into a big hit there's nothing stopping other companies from developing their own system or just buying an already existing company and making their own better virtual tabletop.

I actually listened to some of this and I'm puzzled.

I get the points the guy's making. But in the end of it, EVEN IF the Paizo OGL really came out without a "moral clause", why should based people be happy about it?
Except for a point scored, perhaps.
Why would one want to create content for a woke system to begin with, if he's not woke himself?

I have no idea bud. I'm commenting on his videos stating what the US Copyright Office and case law says about game mechanics. I'm pushing for him to make another video doing a deep dive into the actual law.

I had one guy, that published a set of rules, comment that they need a license to replicate their rules. I said that wasn't necessary since the copyright extends only to the full expression of the book and that a simple rewrite of their rules will bypass that. I told him that having people being able to use his trademarks under license was a much better thing as it benefited both parties. He gets sales for the core books and a person can write third party stuff saying that it's made for those core rules.

Naw it boils down to the management not knowing anything about how TTRPGs operate and trying to apply an invalid model, GAS, to it.

their actual logic might be 'you know how netflix is collapsing because everyone has a streamer service now? still, imagine if we could be netflix at their peak for 2 whole quarters!'

It could be or it's just pure idiocy on the part of the management. This is biting them in the ass.

It seems to work for live service and mobile games, aka via "whale hunting"...

They're trying to copyright claim the fantasy genre because D&D invented a ton of commonly used fantasy tropes and it is going to absolutely wreck the industry. Maybe the whole fantasy genre if they decide to retroactively go after novels and video games using those tropes. Another reason why copyright law needs to be reformed. This is absolutely unreasonable.
